What is TP-ET?
TP-ET is an electric typewriter program. If your wondering why not
just use a word processor instead; the answer is TP-ET is just a
lot easier to use and learn. In fact you could use it without ever
even reading the manual.
Most letters/correspondence we write are no larger than 1 to 4
pages. TP-ET will allow files as large as 30,000 bytes. A word
processor allows files as large as memory. Not only is TP-ET an
excellent way to write letters but; it is very useful as a simple
text editor. In fact compared to EDIT.EXE that comes with DOS 5.0
TP-ET is far more powerful and just as easy to use. From writing
batch files to long letters TP-ET will more than satisfy your
needs.
If you are familiar with Version 1.0 you will find no similarity
between this version and 1.0. Version 2.0 is far superior to the
first version. Since MicroSoft came out with Visual Basic for DOS
things that were complicated problems such as Word Wrap - Find and
Replace are now a snap to program.
System Requirements:
MS-DOS 3.1 or higher
512K of system ram
MDA-CGA-EGA-VGA adaptor
Printer (required for printout of documents)
286 16MHZ or higher recommended (8088 will work but screens take
ore time to load.)
(2)
First Things First:
Selecting Text:
You will see many references to Select Text. Whenever you are told
to select text there are 2 different ways to do this.
KeyBoard:
Place the cursor on the top left corner (character)
where you want the selected text to begin. Press the
SHIFT KEY DOWN AND HOLD IT DOWN while you move the
cursor with the arrow keys to the bottom right corner
(character) where the selected text is to end. Let up on
the Shift Key. The selected text will be in reverse
video (highlighted). This works whether you are
selecting one character or multiple lines of text.
Mouse:
Place the mouse cursor on the top left corner
(character) where you want the selected text to begin.
PRESS AND HOLD THE LEFT MOUSE BUTTON DOWN WHILE you move
the Mouse cursor to the bottom right corner (character)
where the selected text is to end. Let up on the Left Mouse
Button. The selected text will be in reverse video
(highlighted). This works whether you are selecting one
character or multiple lines of text.
WATCH OUT ---- WATCH OUT --- WATCH OUT
Anytime you have any text highlighted DO NOT PRESS ANY KEY THAT
WILL PRINT A CHARACTER ON THE SCREEN. If you do whatever text is
highlighted will be replaced by whatever key you press. This is
not just an anomolly of TP-ET this is common among MicroSoft word
processing programs IE: MicroSoft Works. If this does happen to
you and you did not intend for it to happen simply Open the Edit
Menu and select Undo. This will put the text back the way it was.
One thing to remember: DO NOT PRESS ANY MORE KEYS BEFORE YOU USE
UNDO. If you press even one more key that places a character on
the screen Undo will not help you.
(3)

Each Screen Main/Edit has a Hyper-Text Help system available.
The help text is in TP-ET.HLP file which resides in the same
Drive/Dir as TP-ET.EXE. If it cannot be found when TP-ET loads a
message will appear on the screen informing you Help is not
available. If Disk Space is a premium you can elect not to have
TP-ET.HLP available as this file is over 60K in size.
As TP-ET loads it will look for TP-ET.DRV, if it is not found you
will see a message telling you so and that the Generic Driver is
being used. What this means no Printer Control codes can be
embedded within your letter. This is exactly what will happen the
first time you use TP-ET. Once TP-ET loads open the Printer Menu
and select a Printer driver that matches your printer or one that
your printer can emulate. From the Printer Menu select whichever
output port LPT 1-2-3 is connected to your printer. LPT 1
is the default port and probably will be the right one 90% of the
time.
Up And Running:
Assuming you have run install.bat you should now have the Main
Menu Screen on your Monitor. Using the Menus is very easy. They
are just like any other Pull Down Menu System. Your Mouse is fully
supported by TP-ET in fact it is by far the easiest way to use TP-
ET.
Opening a Menu:
Mouse: just point and shoot:
KeyBoard: Press ALT key and the Highlighted letter of the Pull
Down Menu Item you want. You may also use the Left/Right arrow
keys to move the bouncing light bar to the Pull Down Menu Item you
want and press Enter.
The Settings Menu has all the document settings that you can
change and save to disk. Most all Settings require none to very
little actual typing from the keyboard on your part. It has been
made as goof proof as possible. You can select any item from a
pull down menu by pressing the Highlighted Letter - moving the
light bar and pressing Enter - or click the left mouse button on
the item.
Margins: The minimum/maximum values are programmed into TP-ET. You
cannot enter an out of range amount. You use the scroll bars to
select the margin settings. Use the mouse on the scroll bar ends
or elevator button or use the Tab Key to select (Highlight) the
margin control you want then press the left/right arrow keys to
change the value. Click Accept/Cancel or use the Tab Key to
(5)
select the Accept/Cancel button then press Enter or Space Bar.
Boxes - Date/Time Stamp: these have option buttons you select to
get the desired effect. Simply click the option or use the Tab Key
to enter a Frame and use the Up/Down arrow key to select the
option. Click/Press the Accept/Cancel button.
Word Wrap - Auto Save: these are simply ON/OFF switches.
Click/Press the desired button.
Printer Drivers: a list box will open showing you all the printer
drivers available. There are several ways to scroll through the
list. Us Page Up/Page Down - Up/Down arrow keys - Click on the
Scroll Bar - Press Home/End keys - Press a letter of the alphabet
to get to a section quickly, IE: to get to the Epson printers
press E. Highlight the driver you want and press Accept/Cancel.
Port Change: is like the Date/Time Stamp you click/select the
option button you want.
Current Driver/Port and Supported Codes are information screens
only. They tell you which printer and what output port is active
also which printer control codes the driver supports.
Start: does just what is says, it sends you to the Edit Screen
where you type in your letter.
Help: the Help menu has a section on using help. See that
selection to understand how to use Help.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Edit Screen:
The Edit Screen is divided into 2 sections. The top section is
where you enter your letter. The bottom section is an information
area. There are 4 info frames. Word Count: Byte Count: Disk Space:
Mins. remaining before Auto Save (if Auto Save has been turned
on).
The top bar is the Pull Down Menu Bar. The first Menu File takes
care of all file Input/Output. If you are going to open an
existing file a dialog box will open. As with most dialog boxes in
TP-ET you don't have to type in any input; you can do it all with
the keyboard or mouse. The default Drive and Directory will be
displayed in two list boxes. The box on the left are all files in
the current or default directory. The list box on the right are
all Sub-directories of the current directory. Above this list box
is a Drive selector.
(6)
Selecting a file:
We will assume you want a file on Hard Drive D. The directory is
TPET. The file is MYLET. We will also assume the default or
current Drive/Dir is Drive C: - ASCII directory. The first thing
you will see when you select Open Existing File is all the files
in the directory ASCII on Drive C:
Changing Drives:
Mouse -- click the arrow on the Drive selector above the directory
list box. A list of all available drives on your system will
appear. In our case we will select Drive D by clicking on D:
Keyboard -- Use the Tab key to highlight/select the Drive Selector
then use the Down/Up arrow to cycle through the available drives.
In this case when D appears we would press Enter.
Changing Directories:
When Drive D appears all files and directories from the root or
main directory of drive D will appear in both list boxes.
Mouse -- use the scroll bar to highlight the directory TPET and
press Enter or just Double Click on TPET.
Keyboard -- Use the Tab Key to select/highlight the Directory list
box. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to highlight TPET and press Enter.
Selecting the file:
All available files in the subdirectory TPET on Drive D will now
appear in the file list box (left side list box).
Mouse -- Use the scroll bar to highlight MYLET then press Enter or
just Double Click on it.
KeyBoard -- Use the Tab Key to select/highlight the file list box.
Use the Up/Down arrow keys to highlight MYLET then press Enter.
TP-ET will now check the file size of MYLET if it is over 30,000
bytes you will not be able to load it into the Edit Screen. If it
is less you will be asked if you want a backup copy created before
you begin to work on MYLET. It is a prudent idea to always make a
back up of an important file. All back up copies will have their
first character changed to the % sign.
Once MYLET appears in the Edit Screen you can do anything you wish
to the file.
(7)
New File:
If you have been working on a file and are finished and want to
write another letter you can clear the Edit Screen by using New
File. The first thing TP-ET does is see if this file already has a
file name. If it does, it saves it to disk then clears the Edit
Screen. If it does not have a file name a dialog box will open for
you to type in a file name. You will be offered the option of
saving the file as a .LET file. The only difference between a .LET
file and any other file is your current settings will also be saved
in the file such as margins date/time stamp etc. If you want a
.LET file select the .LET file option. You may type in a
Drive/Directory before the name of the file.
------------
Save File/Save As:
Save File is used to do just what the name indicates Save the
current file in the Edit Screen. If it already has a name, that is
the name that will be used. Save As is handy when you have changed
a file and want to save it as a different name yet retain the
original file on disk unchanged. Such a circumstance is when
writing a form letter where you need only to input the name and
date but the text remains as is. When you save files in TP-ET you
can name the drive and directory. It is up to you to make sure
the Drive/Dir and File name are legal DOS entries. If you have
loaded a file from the open existing selection then which ever
drive/directory you loaded from will be the drive/directory it will
be saved to. Of course it is up to you not to remove a disk from the
drive that the file came from. If the drive is not ready you will
receive an error message to correct the situation and try again.
-------------
Convert to ASCII:
Use this when you want to remove all embedded printer control
characters and if it is a .LET file the settings line. This is the
first line of a .LET file. What you end up with is a pure ASCII
file that can be loaded into any word processor that will accept
pure ASCII files. The file will have the same name except it will
now carry the extension .ASC. You will still have the original
file on disk. Another option is to remove embedded printer control
characters and add CR/LF at the end of each screen line. This way
your letter will be exactly as it appears on the screen. This
option is not available if Word Wrap is currently turned off.
(8)
DOS SHELL:
Use this when you want to return to DOS. You may have to return to
format a Disk or whatever. When you want to return to TP-ET simply
type EXIT [ENTER} at the DOS prompt. You will be returned to the
screen you left Main/Edit.
--------------
Cut/Copy/Paste:
These are very handy word processor functions. You highlight
whatever text you want to CUT or COPY. Using a mouse place the
mouse cursor on the first letter of the word/phrase you want to
select. Press the left button down and hold it down. Now move the
mouse to the diagonal right bottom corner and let up on the
button. The text will be highlighted. With the KeyBoard place the
cursor on the first letter of the word/phrase you want to select.
Press a Shift Key down and hold it down while using the arrow keys
to move to the diagonal right bottom corner. Let up on the Shift
key. You now have the text highlighted.
You can now Cut the text out of the file by selecting Cut from the
Edit Menu. This will place the text in the ClipBoard. To paste the
text back in the file (anywhere) place the cursor where you want
the text and select Paste from the Edit Menu. To make a Copy of a
word/phrase select the text as outlined above and select Copy from
the Edit Menu. You now still have the text in the original
position plus a copy of it in the ClipBoard. You can Paste it in
the file anywhere you wish.
Some word processors call this procedure Copy/Move instead of
Cut/Copy/Paste. You may also select any text and press the Delete
key. The text will be gone. No copy will be placed in the
ClipBoard.
UNDO:
Our savior. Undo can save you from an unwanted delete. Suppose you
select some text and press Delete when you meant to use the Cut
feature. The text will not be placed in the ClipBoard.
STOP BEFORE YOU TOUCH ANOTHER KEY:
(9)
Select Undo from the Edit Menu to restore the deleted text. The
reason the stop before you touch another key is every time you
press a key whatever was in undo will be replaced by whatever
characters made up the file before the last key press. In other
words if the file said:
How are you doing.
Now you press the letter W -- the file will now be
How are you doing. W
The Undo copy will be How are you doing.
Now you press the letter e -- the text will now be
How are you doing. We
The Undo copy will be How are you doing. W
As you can see the text before the last typed letter is always in
Undo. Undo is not really to retrieve this type of text. What it
really is for to retrieve a massive delete of a selected block of
text. The reason for the example is to impress on you the
importance of using Undo immediately and not to type a single
character before you use it.
Center A Line:
You center a line by Selecting the line then selecting Center A
Line from the Edit Menu. You select the line the same way you
select any text. You must select the line before it can be
centered. If nothing is selected you will receive an error
message. If you select more than one line you will receive an
error message. The only way you can defeat the function is to
select only a couple words in a line. Doing this will cause
unpredictable results.
----------------
What the Heck is this ClipBoard thing?????
The ClipBoard is a area in memory that is used as a temporary
storage area. Only one block of text can be held in this area at a
time. When you select a block of text then Cut/Copy it, a copy of
it is placed in the ClipBoard. Whenever you use the Paste feature
a COPY of the text block is inserted in your letter. You can
Paste as many copies as you want anywhere in the letter that you
want. If you select a new block of text and use the Cut/Copy
selections the new block of text will replace whatever is already
in the ClipBoard. Keep this in mind when you use the Cut/Copy
features.
(10)
Find Find/Replace:
This is another very hand addition to TP-ET. By selecting Find
from the Find Menu a dialog box will open up. Type in what you
want to find a word/phrase. If you want the find to be case
sensitive select the case sensitive option. The first match will
appear highlighted. Pressing F3 will move you to the next match.
The matching is cyclical in other words the match will go through
the end of the file on to the beginning of the file.
Find and Replace:
This works similar to Find except the dialog box contains 2 input
lines and two frames with option buttons. The first input line is
the word/phrase you want to be found. The second input line is the
word/phrase with which you want to replace the first line. The
replace word/phrase can be shorter or longer than the find
word/phrase. TP-ET will adjust all lines to fit within the
left/right margins IF WORD WRAP IS ON. If it is off the replace
word/phrase will be inserted on the line with no regard for the
right margin.
The 2 frames with option buttons are if you want the find to be
case sensitive or not; and whether you want verification before a
replace. This is probably a good idea in a very long letter where
several finds of the find word/phrase are scattered throughout the
letter. You may replace an instance that you do not want replaced.
If you select verify every time a find is made a verification
window will open. In this window is Change Skip Cancel. If you
select Change the find will be replaced. Skip will leave the find
as is and search for the next find. Cancel will cancel the entire
find/replace operation.
The Find in Find - Replace works a little different than the one
in Find. Once the bottom of the file is incurred the Find and
Replace will stop. It will not cycle back to the beginning. If you
are to begin a Find - Replace it would be wise to go to the top of
the file (press CTRL-HOME). Once you are the top of the file now
select Find-Replace. This way the entire file will be searched.
----------------
(11)
Codes:
Under the Codes menu you will find all the special printer control
characters you can embed in your letter. Any controls that are
greyed out are not supported by your printer and can not be
selected. In fact if you are using the Generic Printer Driver the
menu selection Codes will be grayed out. Most of the codes have an
ON/OFF state. The ASCII characters to the right of the code
represent what you will see on your screen. The first character is
the ON character the second character is the OFF. Pica does not
have an OFF character. It is your responsibility to turn a code
off once you have turned it on. For instance if you turn on
SuperScript for say one word and forget to turn it off it will
remain in effect for the remainder of your letter. To turn on a
control code simply select the code you want immediately before
the first letter of the word/phrase. To turn it off select the
control code again immediately after the last letter of the
word/phrase. TP-ET keeps track of any control codes you have
turned on and will insert the proper control character to shut the
code off. As you embed codes you will notice that in the Code Menu
that every time a printer code is inserted a bullet appears before
it's name. When you embed the code to turn that printer code off
the bullet disappears. It would be a good idea to check the menu
before printing a letter to see if you left any codes turned on.
You should be able to select multiple codes for the word/phrase. I
was unable to test this because I do not have every one of these
printers. On the printers that I have tested multiple codes have
worked.
---------------------
Boxes:
It is very easy to draw boxes in your letter. The Shift F1-F6 keys
do the drawing. Whatever style of box you have selected in the
Main Menu under the Settings Menu will be the style of box you can
draw. You cannot change styles from the Edit Screen. Drawing boxes
is not like using a Paint Program. In other words the arrow keys
will not draw the boxes. Another difference you must press the
Enter key at the end of each line to get to the next line. Use the
space bar to move over in line with the box to draw the next
element. Once a box is drawn you can type inside the box by using
the Overtype Mode. Press the INS key to toggle between the Insert
and Overtype Mode.
---------------------
(12)
Inserts:
There are 3 selections in the Insert Menu. You can insert the
current Date - Time - or one of the Auto Insert Keys that have
been programmed. The Date and Time format will be whatever you
selected in the Settings Menu of the Main Menu. The Auto Insert
keys all have Hot keys. ALT 0-9 will insert one of the ten AI
keys. If Word Wrap is turned on the inserted text will cause the
line and subsequent lines to word wrap as necessary.
---------------------
Options:
There are many options available. You can change the text of an
entire file to Upper or Lower case. You can change the text in a
selected block to Upper or Lower case.
You can set a bookmark anywhere in your letter and return to it.
You can blank the screen (same is available in the Main Menu under
Settings Menu). A moving window will open saying the computer is
in service and to press any key to unblank the screen.
You can enlarge the size of the Edit Area. By pressing CTRL Down
Arrow the Edit Area will increase by one line. Enlarging the Edit
Area will cover up the message frames at the bottom of the screen.
To shrink the Edit Area press CTRL Up Arrow. The Edit Area will
shrink until it reaches it's normal default size.
You can check to see where the Page Break will occur when you
print the letter. This is very handy in a multiple page letter. If
the break doesn't occur where you want, simply add/subtract
blank lines until it does.
---------------------
Help:
The Help is the same as in the Main Menu Screen except it is
geared towards the Edit Screen selections. To learn how to use the
Hyper-Text Help System select Using Help from the Help Menu.
About TP-ET:
TP-ET was originally written in 1989. This is the second update.
Version 1.5 was a bug fix of version 1.0. This version 2.0 is
leaps and bounds past 1.5. An entirely new user interface and Edit
Screen is in 2.0. Many features have been added to 2.0.
(13)
1.0/1.5 was written using Microsoft's Quick Basic 4.5 and many 3rd
party routines from Micro Help. Version 2.0 is written with
Microsoft's new Visual Basic For DOS. This language is radically
different from what was being used here at Thumb Print Software.
VB/DOS has a look and feel of a Window's program. Things that
would have been a monumental task IE: Cut/Copy/Paste and
Find/Replace are now easily coded. The true winner is you the
user. It is now possible for Thumb Print Software to make a total
remake of TP-ET and still keep the registration cost the same
$19.50. Quite a bit of thought was given to doubling the
registration fee. Fortunately ShareWare was suppose to be a low
cost alternative to shrink wrap products. Some of the ShareWare
companies products are actually more expensive than their
commercial counterparts. TP-ET is aimed almost exclusively at the
home user and the small business and clubs. We at TPS feel
everything in this world is to expensive; that is why the low
cost of registration.
TP-ET in the ShareWare Version is the exact same as the Registered
version. There are no hidden or disabled features. So Why
Register. Well; mainly because it is the right thing to do.
Besides when you register you will receive TPLABEL. This is an
excellent mailing label program. You can print mailing labels
(pin fed). Print business envelopes by manual feeding
envelopes to any HP compatible Laser Printer. Each
label database can contain 1000 addresses. You can have up to 100
different databases, that is the same as having 100,000 addresses
on disk. Another feature of TPLABEL is the ability to print
reports of all the addresses in a database. These reports are
printed in condensed elite (160 characters per line). Each address
is on a single line. Each address consists of up to 32 characters
per line (field) with 5 lines per label.
ETPRN.EXE:
The registered version of TP-ET contains this program. If no
printer driver will work with your printer ETPRN.EXE will create a
custom driver just for your printer. All you need to do is have
your printer manual handy and then input the control codes
directly into ETPRN as they appear in your manual.
(14)
Navigation Keys:
When you are in the Edit Screen the following keys move you about
the document:
DEL --------------- deletes the character the cursor is on.
BKSP -------------- deletes the character to the left of the
cursor. Text moves left.
PG-UP ------------- moves the text ahead 1 screen page.
PG-DN ------------- moves the text back 1 screen page.
Arrow Keys -------- moves cursor Left/Right 1 character.
moves cursor Up/Down 1 line.
CTRL-Left Arrow --- moves cursor 1 word left.
CTRL-Right Arrow -- moves cursor 1 word right.
CTRL-Home --------- moves cursor to beginning of the document.
CTRL-End ---------- moves cursor to the end of the document.
INS --------------- toggles between Overtype and Insert States.
Overtype State cursor is full character cell.
Insert State cursor is bottom of cell.
Using The TAB Key:
If you are not using a mouse the TAB key moves you from control to
control in any of the Dialog Boxes. A control is any item that can
get the focus IE: a text line/box -- a button (Cancel - Ok
etc). Shift Tab will move you backward through the controls in the
Dialog Box.
DOS Command Line Switches:
MONO:
The Mono switch is mainly for LapTop/NoteBook computers and those
using a CGA card with a composite B/W monitor IE: Tandy 1000 with
a VM-4 monitor. If your adapter card is color but your monitor is
not try this switch to force TP-ET into B/W.
TP-ET MONO [ENTER]
File:
If you want to load a file to Edit as TP-ET is loading you may add
the file to the DOS Command Line. You may use the MONO switch and
a file name on the Command Line. It does not matter which order
they are in:
IE: TP-ET MONO C:\ASCII\LETTERS\MYLET [ENTER]
IE: TP-ET D:\LETTERS\JOE.LET MONO [ENTER]
(15)
Why Register?
If you find that you use TP-ET the Shareware Concept requests that
you register the program with the author. By registering you
encourage the author to continue to support the program. Without
any feed back a program will soon become abandoned even if there
are many users who don't feel they should register the program.
Many a shareware program has fell by the wayside because of non-
registration by the users. None of us authors will ever get rich
from shareware (exceptions: PC-WRITE PROCOMM - BUTTONWARE etc:)
but; we do appreciate receiving some compensation for our time and
efforts.
What does Registration get you:
Besides a real warm and fuzzy feeling ----------

The latest registered version of TP-ET.

Each time you Exit TP-ET back to DOS you will be asked if you want to
load the TP-ET Registration form. This form is provided so that you
need only to fill in the blanks. To move from Field to Field use the
Tab key or Shift Tab to move backwards. The form sends no codes to
your printer and therefore should print out with no problems. Be sure
to check which Shipping/Handling charges apply to you and the size
disk/s you need. 5 1/4" disks are 360K format - 3 1/2" disks are 720K
format.
You may pay by personal check. So far I haven't been stung with a
bad check. Until that happens there won't be any waiting time for
the check to clear. Sorry I'm not big enough to have MC/VISA.
