  27. BACKUP YOUR HARD DISK FIRST
  28. ===========================
  29. Before installing DiskLock be sure to make a complete backup of
  30. your hard drive. Be sure to keep backup in a safe location.
  31.  
  32. INSTALLATION
  33. ============
  34. 1.  Make a working copy of the DiskLock diskette using the DISKCOPY command.
  35.     Save the original diskette in a safe place.
  36. 2.  Insert the working diskette into one of your floppy drives,
  37.         for example, B:
  38. 3.  At the B> prompt, type INSTALL then press <Enter>
  39.  
  40. ATTENTION COMPAQ USERS:
  41. =======================
  42. If you plan to install Disklock on a Compaq computer, it must be running
  43. Compaq DOS version 4.01 or a higher version of Compaq DOS.  Disklock
  44. will not run correctly on Compaq computers running Compaq DOS versions
  45. earlier than 4.01.  You can find out what version of DOS is running on
  46. your computer by typing "VER" at the DOS prompt.
  47.  
  48. If you inadvertently install Disklock on a Compaq computer running an
  49. unsupported version of DOS, the computer either will not properly
  50. complete the boot process, or will "lock up" the first time you try to
  51. run an application.  If either of these symptoms occur, consult your
  52. manual for instructions on using the "FUNINST" command to uninstall
  53. Disklock using a floppy diskette.  Once Disklock is uninstalled, you can
  54. upgrade your DOS version and reinstall Disklock.
  55.  
  56. UNINSTALLING DISKLOCK
  57. =====================
  58.      From the DISKLOCK subdirectory type DL then press <Enter>
  59.  
  60. Select "Install" and then select the "Uninstall" pull down.
  61.  
  62. EMERGENCY UNINSTALL
  63. ===================
  64. If you are unable to run the DL program you can uninstall from the 
  65. working copy of the DiskLock diskette you created. Use the FUNINST 
  66. (floppy uninstall) program. Be certain to follow the directions carefully. 
  67. FUNINST is a two step procedure that includes rebooting the PC.
  68.  
  69. DISK CACHING SOFTWARE
  70. =====================
  71. You must be certain to turn off disk caching software, such as
  72. NCACHE or PC-CACHE before installing or uninstalling DISKLOCK.
  73.  
  74. ADDING NEW HARDWARE OR DRIVERS TO YOUR PC
  75. =========================================
  76. It is recommended that you uninstall DiskLock before adding new
  77. hardware or drivers to your PC. You must also uninstall DiskLock
  78. before uninstalling DOS 5.00.
  79.  
  80. DISKLOCK DEVICE DRIVER
  81. ======================
  82. Once DiskLock is installed on your hard drive, the DiskLock device
  83. driver line should not be removed from your CONFIG.SYS file. 
  84.  
  85. HARD DISK PARTITION DRIVERS
  86. ===========================
  87. If you have a partitioned hard drive (i.e. Disk Manager, Speed
  88. Store), your partition device drivers must load before the
  89. DISKLOCK.SYS loads. DISKLOCK.SYS should usually be the last device
  90. driver in the CONFIG.SYS file.
  91.  
  92. SPINRITE
  93. ========
  94. DiskLock is not compatible with SpinRite software. If you use SpinRite
  95. and DiskLock together your hard disk may become unbootable.
  96.  
  97. MULTI-BOOT SOFTWARE
  98. ===================
  99. The DiskLock device driver must be loaded to access DOS.  If you are
  100. using Multi-Boot software, the DiskLock device driver must load in
  101. each boot configuration.
  102.  
  103. MULTI-OPERATING SYSTEMS
  104. =======================
  105. DiskLock is not compatible with machines that have two operating
  106. systems installed on their hard drive.  If DiskLock is installed on
  107. a system running multiple systems (i.e. DOS on one partition and
  108. UNIX on another), the non-DOS system will be damaged.
  109.  
  110. DO NOT LOAD DISKLOCK HIGH
  111. ==========================
  112. DISKLOCK.SYS should not be loaded high. The install program will write
  113. the proper line in the CONFIG.SYS file. For example...
  114.  
  115.       DEVICE=C:\DISKLOCK\DISKLOCK.SYS
  116.  
  117. WINDOWS
  118. =======
  119. The Autolock (timer generated) and HotKey (user activated) lock features
  120. of DiskLock DO NOT work under Microsoft WINDOWS.  You must deactivate
  121. the AutoLock by setting it to 00 if you want to run WINDOWS after DiskLock
  122. is activated.  You cannot use the HotKey lock while running WINDOWS.  You
  123. must exit WINDOWS, then lock your system with your HotKey.
  124.  
  125. DOS 2.0
  126. =======
  127. DiskLock is incompatible with DOS 2.0
  128.  
  129. PLUS DEVELOPMENT'S HARD CARDS
  130. =============================
  131. Plus Development's Hard Cards that require the use of device
  132. drivers for operation are NOT compatible with DiskLock.  Hard Card
  133. Plus IIXL is not compatible with DiskLock.
  134.  
  135. FASTBACK and OTHER BACKUP PROGRAMS
  136. ==================================
  137. Data encrypted with Proprietary or DES encryption will remain
  138. encrypted on a backup or restore set.
  139.  
  140. KEY DISK
  141. ========
  142. Once you install DiskLock on your hard drive, the diskette you used
  143. becomes a key disk.  During installation, DiskLock writes important
  144. information about the system to this diskette.  This information will
  145. be necessary to uninstall DiskLock.  Make a copy of the key disk as
  146. a precaution; use the DISKCOPY command to make the copy.
  147.  
  148. Label the disk as a key disk and include the type of machine the
  149. disk was used on.  Store the disk in a safe place.  Do not use this
  150. key disk to install DiskLock on any other PC.
  151.  
  152. MOUSE INCOMPATIBILITIES
  153. =======================
  154. The AutoLock feature in DiskLock will not function with Logitech's
  155. Bus mouse.
  156.  
  157. NETWORKS
  158. ========
  159. DiskLock cannot be installed on a File Server but may be installed
  160. on network nodes, including Novell, Lantastic.  However, there is
  161. a known incompatibility with the DNA network driver.
  162.  
  163. INTERNATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
  164. ============================
  165. In DOS 5.00 you may specify your country code and your keyboard type
  166. and code page.
  167.  
  168. The country code is added to your CONFIG.SYS file. For example...
  169.  
  170.         country=001,,c:\dos\country.sys
  171.  
  172. The keyboard arrangement and character set are defined in the
  173. AUTOEXEC.BAT file. (Do not use the CONFIG.SYS file!) For example...
  174. In your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
  175.  
  176.         c:\dos\keyb us,437,c:\dos\keyboard.sys DL*K
  177.  
  178. This defines your keyboard to be a United States layout using
  179. code page 437. The "DL*K" is required by DiskLock. If you uninstall
  180. DiskLock you must remove the "DL*K" from the end of the line.
  181.  
  182. QEMM386 VERSION 6
  183. =================
  184. DiskLock will prevent QEMM386 ver. 6 from using any of its "stealth"
  185. techniques. If you were using Stealth prior to DiskLock's installation,
  186. you must rerun QEMM's "Optimize" utility.
