about our other programs, including our new desktop publishing
program, Vision Publisher and Vision Publisher Pro.
------- STEP 1 ------- BACKING-UP YOUR ORIGINAL DISKETTE
Insert the original disk in drive A and your work disk in
drive B, and enter:
COPY A:*.* B:
and press Enter or Return.
If you have a hard disk you might want to set up a subdirectory
for QuickPlan. A good name for the QuickPlan subdirectory would
be \QP, because it's easy to remember. If your hard disk is C or
another letter, enter your hard drive letter at the DOS prompt.
Like this:
C:
and press Enter or Return.
You should see your hard drive, usually C, followed by a prompt,
like this:
C>
Now you are ready to make a new directory for Quickplan, so at
the hard disk prompt, enter:
MKDIR \QP (Press Enter or Return)
Now that the QP directory was created, you have to change to it,
so enter:
CHDIR \QP (Press Enter or Return)
Now you are ready to copy your original disk onto your hard
disk. Insert your original disk in the floppy drive, and enter:
COPY A:*.*
That's it! Now you can put your original diskette away for safe
keeping.
------- STEP 2 ------- LOADING AND STARTING QUICKPLAN
LOADING FROM A FLOPPY:
----------------------
Insert the program diskette in the floppy drive, usually A,
and at the DOS prompt enter:
QP (Press Enter or Return)
Once QuickPlan will load, the screen will be cleared, and a start-up
message will appear on the screen. Press any key to get back to the DOS
prompt.
The start-up message shows the copyright message, the registration
information, the ordering information for our other shareware products,
as well as the primary and the secondary hot-keys.
LOADING FROM A HARD DISK:
-------------------------
Change to the subdirectory where you keep QuickPlan and
at the DOS prompt enter:
CHDIR \QP
Where \QP is the name of the subdirectory. If you keep QuickPlan in a
different subdirectory, replace \QP with that name. Once you are in the
correct subdirectory, or if you don't have any subdirectory, simply
type:
QP (Press Enter or Return)
Once QuickPlan will load, the screen will be cleared, and a start-up
message will appear on the screen. Press any key to get back to the DOS
prompt.
The start-up message shows the copyright message, the registration
information, the ordering information for our other shareware products,
as well as the primary and the secondary hot-keys.
STARTING QUICKPLAN
------------------
Since QuickPlan is a memory resident program you must press one of
its hot-keys to pop it over other programs that you may be using.
QuickPlan's hot keys are ALT-Tab and ALT-RightShift. Press any of
these keys to pop QuickPlan.
EXITING QUICKPLAN TEMPORARILY
-----------------------------
When QuickPlan is on the screen, press Esc while in READY mode,
or select "Exit QuickPlan" from the menu, to send QuickPlan
back into memory, and bring the foreground program on the screen.
QuickPlan will still be in memory, waiting for you to press one of
its hot keys, when it will again leap onto the screen.
REMOVING QUICKPLAN
------------------
There are times when you may need the extra memory occupied by
QuickPlan. To remove QuickPlan from memory, press CTRL-Q or CTRL-END
while in READY mode.
Usually, removing TSR programs from memory takes a litle bit of
planning. Most other TSR programs will have you go through a very
complex process in order to safely remove them from memory - should
you not follow their instructions to the letter, chances are, you
will crash your computer. QuickPlan however, is built around a very
advanced TSR (terminate and stay resident) set of routines, which
allow us to provide you with a very save removing technique.
QuickPlan will automatically detect whether it is safe and proper to
remove itself from memory, and if it is not, it will show an error
message, and refuse to remove itself. Times when QuickPlan may not
let you remove it is when other memory resident (pop-up) programs
using the same interrupt vectors have been loaded AFTER it, or when
there is a foreground application running. In these instances you
will have to remove the other programs first, and then remove
QuickPlan.
------- STEP 3 ------- A QUICK LOOK AT QUICKPLAN
Now that we loaded QuickPlan, and pressed the ALT and TAB keys
simultaneously, we find ourselves inside QuickPlan.
QuickPlan brings you to the very beginning of the spreadsheet. Here,
we can either start a new worksheet, or we can load an existing
worksheet. To give you a better idea of how to start a worksheet we
will load a sample worksheet to guide us along. The sample worksheet
is named CHECK.QPS. We will later load this worksheet in QuickPlan,
discuss it, and expand on it. But, first, let's discuss some of
QuickPlan's features:
STATUS LINE
-----------
The line at the top of the screen is called the STATUS LINE. It
displays important information such as:
-- AutoCalc Status --
When AutoCalc is ON, QuickPlan will recalculate its worksheet
after every numeric or formula entry. When OFF, the worksheet
will only be recalculated when you request it.
To toggle the AutoCalc status ON or OFF, press the ALT-A (the
Alt key and the letter A). Try it now. See how it changes
instantly. You can also change the AutoCalc status from the menu
by choosing Autocalc.
-- Time and Date --
The time and date are displayed to the right of the AutoCalc
status for your convenience.
-- Filename --
The current filename is displayed to the right of the Time and
Date display. The filename also lists any optional drive or
directory path specification.
-- Mode Indicator --
The last item on the status line is the mode indicator.
QuickPlan has 16 possible modes that it can display here.
Usually, when it is ready and waiting for the next command or
action, it displays READY. If for example you are entering a
number it will display VALUE. If you are entering text into a
cell, it will show LABEL. We will learn more about these modes as
we go over our checkbook worksheet. For a description of each of
QuickPlan's modes please refer to the User's Guide.
HELP LINE
---------
At the very bottom of the screen we have the HELP LINE. This line
lists some of the function keys that are available in the current
mode, and what they do. The contents of the Help Line are constantly
updated as you enter or exit different modes.
Try it now: press F10 to bring up the Menu - see how the Help Line
changed to reflect the keys that are available with the Menu? Now
press Esc to exit the Menu, and return to READY mode.
For example, here are the special keys available in READY mode:
F1-help - This gives you help about what you are doing now.
F2-edit - This lets you edit the current cell.
F3-load - This allows you to load another worksheet.
F4-save - You can save your current worksheet.
F9-calc - Lets you calculate your worksheet.
F10-menu - Brings up the MENU.
Esc-exit - Exits QuickPlan and returns you to your foreground
program, if any, However, Quickplan remains in the
computer's memory.
The Help Line also indicates the status of the shift keys on your
keyboard: CapsLock, NumLock, Insert. Try it now: press CapsLock - see
how "CAPS" appeared on the Help Line? Now press CapsLock again to turn
it off.
CELL COORDINATES DISPLAY
------------------------
The line underneath the Status Bar (second line from the top), is the
Cell Coordinates Display. This line shows the row and column where
the cell pointer lies, the type of contents that cell has (Empty,
Label, Value, or Formula), and, if the contents is a formula, that
formula is also displayed. This line is also used for inputting
values and formulas (labels are entered directly into the worksheet).
As the cell pointer is moved around the worksheet with the Arrow,
PgUp, PgDn, Home and End keys, the Cell Coordinates Display line is
updated to reflect the current position of the cell pointer.
Try moving the cell pointer around with the arrow keys; notice how
the Cell Coordinates Line changes.
QUICKPLAN'S HELP SYSTEM
-----------------------
QuickPlan provides comprehensive on-line context-sensitive help.
Context-sensitive means that when you request help, QuickPlan will
give you help information pertaining to the action you were taking
when requesting help. For example, if you invoke the help system
while saving a worksheet, QuickPlan will give you help about saving
worksheets.
To invoke the help system, press F1 (function key 1) or Alt-H. The
help window will pop up. If there is more than one page of help
available on a subject, "<More...>" will appear in the lower right
corner of the screen, so that you can use PgUp and PgDn to brouse.
Pressing Esc will exit the help window.
While in READY mode, the help system will also provide you with some
general information about the program, and how to use QuickPlan's
help facilities.
NOTE: in order to see help, the file QP.HLP must be in the drive and
on the directory path from where you loaded QuickPlan. QuickPlan will
remember this directory and drive, and it will look there for its
help file. If you load QuickPlan from a floppy, you must insert the
QuickPlan floppy into the drive from where you loaded it.
MENU
----
Pressing the "/" (slash), or F10, will cause the menu to appear. The
menu is the backbone of the program, in that every command that you
will use with QuickPlan will come from the menu. Press Esc to exit the
menu.
--- Choosing an item from the menu ---
There are three ways to choose an item from the menu.
1.) Press the capital letter (in either upper or lower case)
associated with the command. For example in our case we
want to load a worksheet, so we would choose the letter L.
If we want to reName a file, we would press the letter N.
2.) You can also use the UpArrow and DownArrow to move the
horizontal bar to the command desired.
3.) By pressing down the ALT key together with the capital letter
associated with the command, you can choose an item from the
menu while you are in, or outside of the menu. This option
is helpful for those of you who become so familiar with the
menu that you can bypass it totally and thus save time.
-------- STEP 4 -------- THE CHECKBOOK SAMPLE WORKSHET
LOADING THE CHECKBOOK WORKSHEET
-------------------------------
Now you are ready to start learning about how to create worksheets.
On your disk, there is a sample checkbook balancing worksheet. We
will load it into QuickPlan, discuss it, and expand it.
Press F10 to bring up the menu. Use your DownArrow key to move the
menu bar down to the LOAD selection. Press the Enter key.
A window will appear on the screen with a heading of "Load Worksheet".
Inside the window you will see:
Filename: *.QPS
When loading worksheets, QuickPlan assumes that your worksheets have
an extension of ".QPS" (though, you can give them any extension you
like). This will help you when loading a file, so that you will only
see files with that ending. Note the "*" character - it is a MS-DOS
global wildcard character. In this case, the "*.QPS" tells the
program to show all the files ending with an extension of ".QPS".
Next, press Enter. Now you will see another window called the
"Directory" window open underneath our "Load Worksheet" window.
The directory window opens anytime you use one of the MS-DOS global
wildcard characters ("*" and "?"), and allows you to select the file
to load. At this point we use the Arrow keys to scroll to the file
"CHECK.QPS". Press Enter to start loading the file.
Now the CHECK.QPS worksheet is on the screen. Before we go on to
examine the worksheet further let's take a closer look at what we see
on the whole screen:
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐

└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Now let's take a closer look at the CHECK.QPS worksheet, and see how
it was designed.
------- EDITING A CELL -------
Cell B2 contains a label, in this case, the worksheet heading:
"QUICKPLAN 2.00 --SAMPLE CHECKBOOK BALANCE WORKSHEET". Since it is
such a large heading, columns B through F are used.
Now let's just say that we forgot to add "Page 1" to our already long
heading. Now if you tried to edit this particular LABEL, and you tried
to put your cell pointer at F2, it would ignore it, and jump down to
F4. Try it now. It doesn't work does it? This is because we started at
cell B2, and this long LABEL is considered to be at B2, even though it
also overflowed cells C through F. The only way to edit such an extended
LABEL, is to go to the beginning of it (cell B2), and then press F2 to
EDIT. Let's try it: move the cell pointer to B2, then press F2. Notice
that the LABEL changes color on the screen, and the cursor is now
blinking at the beginning of our label, this is to let you know that it
is being edited. Also, the mode selector (on the Status Line) changed
from "READY" to "LABEL", and the Help Line has changed to reflect the
special keys that are active while editing a label. Next, press your End
key to move the cursor at the end of the label, and type " Page 1". Now
that we are finished, we can press Enter.
------- ENTERING DATA IN A CELL -------
You enter the data in a cell by moving the cell pointer to the cell
where you wish to enter the data, and start typing. As mentioned
earlier, besides being Empty, a cell can hold three types of data:
LABEL, VALUE, FORMULA. QuickPlan will automatically know what kind
of data you wish to enter by the first character of your entry. Values
and formulas start with a digit "0".."9", ".", the "-" or "+" sign,
while labels start with a letter "A".."Z" or "a".."z" and space.
You can also enter labels that start with a digit, but you will have
to do it using one of these two methods:
1) If the cell is empty, press F2 (the edit key) to go into "LABEL"
mode, then start typing your entry. Regardless of what digit
your entry starts with, QuickPlan will have it classified as
"Label" now.
2) Press one of the keys that trigger a label entry ("A".."Z" or
"a".."z" and space) then use the BackSpace key to erase it, then
enter your entry. Regardless of what digit your entry starts
with, QuickPlan will have it classified as "Label" now.
------- ENTERING A LABEL -------
Let's make another entry into the spreadsheet to give us a better
idea of how QuickPlan works. As an example we are going to pay a
VISA bill on December 19, 1989, with Check #160, and we will send a
minimum $10.00 payment.
In order for QuickPlan to treat numerals as regular text (LABEL), we
must press F2 before entering our checkbook date. Otherwise QuickPlan
will think we are entering numbers to be calculated in a formula.
Follow these steps:
1.) Move cursor down to A14
2.) Press F2
3.) Type directly into the worksheet: 12/19/89
4.) Press Enter
5.) Press Right Arrow (to take us to the next LABEL)
That was easy. Did you notice how the Mode Indicator changed from READY
to LABEL, right after you pressed F2? If you made a mistake press Left
Arrow to take you back to cell A14 and press F2 again, then make your
correction.
Now let's enter the next check number in the "Check#" column which
in this case we would like to be "160". Press Arrow Right to take you
to cell B14, and follow the above procedure. This time however, instead
of the date type in: "160".
Next we would like to type in the word "VISA" in the "description"
column. This column begins at C14 and can occupy cell D14 as well,
if needed. So press the Left Arrow key again, to take us to C14.
This time however, we don't have to press F2, since our entry starts
with an alphabetic character ("V"). All we have to do now is just type
the word "VISA" directly in C14.
Now we are going to enter the actual payment amount of 10.00 dollars.
*** NOTE *** that we are entering all amounts in our checkbook worksheet
as positive numbers.
------- ENTERING A VALUE -------
Move your cell pointer with Left Arrow to E14, under the "payment"
column and type in 10.00, press Enter or Return.
Note that once you typed in the number one, the cursor moved on the
Cell Coordinates Display line - unlike labels, values and formulas are
entered/edited on this line. Also, note that the Mode Indicator
changed from READY to VALUE. Once you press Enter or Return, QuickPlan
moves the number directly into the correct cell, in our case E14.
Notice that column G, cells G14 through G21 automatically display the
new balance of 102.17. This is because we have a formula in Column G.
CHECKBOOK FORMULA
-----------------
Let's take a closer look at our checkbook formula. First bring your cell
pointer to G8. Look at your Cell Coordinates Display:
G8 Formula: +G7-E8+F8
The whole worksheet runs on this formula. Let's look at the mechanics
of our formula. You will usually want to begin your formula with a "+"
sign. There are cases where a minus sign or a number is more
appropriate, but in our case the plus sign is a better choice. All
this formula is saying is: take cell G7 than subtract cell E8 from it,
and add cell F8. In plain English this means: take the above number
from cell G7, then subtract our "payment" column (E8), and add our
"deposit" column (F8). In most cases you will probably have a value in
either the "payment" or the "deposit" column at any one time. If there
is no entry in a cell, QuickPlan automatically gives it a value of
zero.
Notice that since it automatically subtracts cell E8, we don't have to
enter a negative number in the "payment" column (E). If for instance
we would like to enter negative numbers in our "payment" column (E),
than we would change the formula to read:
+G7+E8+F8
and still obtain the same results.
In order for the worksheet to calculate cells G9 through G21, all we
did was copy the formula starting from G8 down to G21.
------- COPYING A FORMULA -------
To learn how to copy formulas, we are going to copy our formula from
G21 down to G42. Follow these steps.
1.) Move your cell pointer to G22
2.) Press F10 or "/", to bring up the menu
3.) Choose "Copy Cell" from the menu (by moving
the highlight bar from the menu, with Arrow
Down key)
4.) The "Copy Cell" window will appear
5.) It will prompt you for "Source Cell", we'll
put in: G21 , and press Enter.
(Although you can use any cell, from G8, down
to G21 as a source cell)
6.) Next you'll be asked for "Target Cell (Start of
Range)", Type in: G22, and press Enter.
7.) You'll be asked again for "Target Cell", but
this time it will be for "End of Range". Let's
type in: G42. Press Enter.
8.) You're Done.
Now scroll down with your Arrow Down keys, and look at column G. Notice
how the formula was copied into every cell in G22 through G42. And if
you put your cell pointer on any of those cells we just copied to, you
will notice how nicely the formula was adjusted to the new cells to
reflect the current cells the formula occupied. The cells were
adjusted because we did not use absolute cell specifications in our
original formula. Had we used absolute cell (column, row, or both)
specifications, the cell specified as absolute would not have been
adjusted. See the QuickPlan User's Guide for a detailed discussion of
absolute and relative cell coordinates.)
SAVING THE CHECKBOOK WORKSHEET
------------------------------
Now that you put all this work into the worksheet, you will want to
save it to disk, for later use.
Press F10 to bring up the menu. Use your DownArrow key to move the
menu bar down to the SAVE selection. Press the Enter key.
A window will appear on the screen with a heading of "Save Worksheet".
Inside the window you will see:
Filename: CHECK.QPS
You can press Enter to save the worksheet under the name CHECK.QPS,
or you can delete it, and enter another name. You filenames must follow
the standard DOS filename conventions (up to 8 characters for the
filename, plus an optional three character extension.) You can also
specify a drive, and a directory path.
The directory window opens anytime you use one of the MS-DOS global
wildcard characters ("*" and "?"), and it allows you to select from
among an existing file.
Now the CHECK.QPS worksheet is saved. You can later LOAD it following
the procedure outlined earlier.
PRINTING THE CHECKBOOK WORKSHEET
--------------------------------
With QuickPlan you can also print your worksheets. Let's print the
checkbook worksheet.
First, turn your printer on, and make sure that it has enough paper.
Press F10 to bring up the menu. Use your DownArrow key to move the
menu bar down to the PRINT selection. Press the Enter key.
A window will appear on the screen with a heading of "Print Worksheet".
QuickPlan will need some information from you before it can print your
worksheet.
For "Filename", you should enter one of these: PRN, LPT1, LPT2, or a
COM port specification. For most computer configurations, PRN or LPT1
will do. If you are using a serial port, and PRN does not print, you
must enter either COM1, or COM2, followed by the serial port parameters
(as described in the DOS manual under the MODE comand). With QuickPlan
you can also print the worksheet to a disk text file, so that you can
later import it into other programs - see the QuickPlan User's Guide for
a detailed discussion of this procedure.
For now, press Enter to accept PRN as our print filename.
Another prompt will appear: "Left margin". Here you enter the number of
leading spaces that should print before the first worksheet entry. If
you leave it as 0 (zero), no leading spaces will be printed. For our
purpose, the default of zero spaces will do, so press Enter to accept
it.
The next two prompts will ask for the range of cells to print. At the
"From cell" prompt you must enter the upper left corner of the cell
range to print. For our purpose, A1 will do, so press Enter to accept
the default.
At the "To cell" prompt you must enter the lower right corner of the
cell range to print. For our purpose, delete the default G99 entry by
pressing the Del key three times, and then enter G21.
If everything went well, the worksheet will be printed. You now have a
hard copy of your checkbook activity.
Well, congratulations! You have made it through the QuickPlan Tutorial.
By now you should be familiar with the basics, and you should be ready
to take on more advanced spreadsheet projects. QuickPlan's User's Guide
