The information provided below is to help you start the program for
your hardware configuration. For more details about the operation of
the program press the F1 (function) key once you have started the
program.
The following files are absolutely essential to run AS-EASY-AS:
ASEASY.EXE ASEASY.MSG ASEASY.MNU ASEASY.FNT
These files need to reside in the same sub-directory. In
addition to that, if the files ASEASY.HLP, ASEASY.PRT, and
ASEASY.CFG are going to be used, they HAVE to reside in the same
(ASEASY) directory as well.
AS-EASY-AS is started from DOS using the command:
C:> ASEASY /Option1/Option2/Option3/..... [ENTER]
Where Option can be one or more of the following:
/4 - Special case for loading WKS files created and last saved
with Version 4.00 of AS-EASY-AS.
/P - Use alternate menu file (ASEASY.MN2) which provides
command compatibility with version 4.00 of AS-EASY-AS.
/ATT - Enables ATT display graphics, video mode $48
/ATT2 - Enables ATT display graphics, video mode $40
/AUTO=File... - Specify the worksheet to be loaded
when the program is started
/BK=x - Set screen blank-out period to x seconds

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ASA55U.DOC - Information about files on Disk #2
ASA55U.EXE - Archived Sample Worksheets, etc.
If your copy of the program came on a 3.5", then all the
above files should be on a single disk.
To Install on Floppy or Hard Disk:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Although the program will work if installed on 360k diskettes, we
recommend that the program is installed either on a hard disk, or a
high density floppy diskette, since this will permit the help file,
the printer setup files, and other auxiliary files, to be available
to the user.
* If you Install and run AS-EASY-AS from a floppy disk, without
* Expanded memory (EMS), or if the /NE command line switch is
* used, and you remove the AS-EASY-AS program disk from
* the drive while the program is running, you will get an
* error message and will be instructed to re-insert the disk.
If installing on 360k disks, you need to have at least two 360
drives, e.g., A and B. You cannot install the program on a
computer with a single 360 K disk drive and no Hard Disk!
* Place the AS-EASY-AS original diskette in drive A: (or B:)
* Make sure the current logged drive is A: (Type A:, or B:, and
press ENTER, if it is not).
* Type INSTALL and press [ENTER]. Then, follow the simple on-screen
instructions to install your copy of the program on the desired disk(s)
and/or subdirectory.
Note: If you are installing on 360K floppy disks, you will
need multiple blank formatted diskettes!
On-Disk Documentation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The installation process extracts a file called ASEASY.MAN. This is a
ready-to-print formatted, User's manual for the program.
Following the installation, make sure that the ASEASY.MAN file is
indeed on your default directory. Then, to print this manual:
(1) Make sure that the your printer is ON and there is enough
paper in it (the manual is about 102 pages).
(2) From the DOS prompt, type
COPY ASEASY.MAN PRN and press [ENTER]
Note that if your printer is connected to a SERIAL port,
then you need to use the command COPY ASEASY.MAN COM1, or
COPY ASEASY.MAN COM2 (depending on which serial port your
printer is connected to).
New Features/User's Manual Changes - AS-EASY-AS Ver. 5.50
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. On some systems (in particular older 486 CPU systems), you
might experience difficulties running AS-EASY-AS v5.5 in
windowed mode, under MS Windows 3.1. In order to avoid such
difficulties, make sure you create a .PIF file to run the
program (check your Windows manual for info on .PIF files).
When setting up the .PIF file, make sure the minimum
conventional RAM requirement is set to at least 400K and,
also, make sure that the EXCLUSIVE operation box has been
selected.
If you are still having difficulties, you might need to turn
the 80387 off and use the program's 80387 emulation instead.
To do that, prior to running Windows, at the DOS prompt, type
'SET 87=N' (without the quotes) and press [ENTER].
2. The Data, Input, Form command has been significantly
enhanced. For starters, the number of fields that may be
defined, is no longer limited to 20. When AS-EASY-AS is run
in Graphics modes, up to 50 fields may be used with the Data,
Input, Form.
Furthermore, the cell immediately above each field, may now
contain a number of field characteristics, as described below.
Please, note that the basic operation of the command has not
changed, i.e., only the row containing the field definitions
needs to be highlighted, NOT THE LINE ABOVE IT!
The field characteristics contained in each cell are separated
by a semi-colon. The cell entry also starts and ends with a
semi-colon. Here are the various options available:
?c,r - Locate the field at column(c) and row(r).
Example: ?10,5
Cx - Set the color for this input field to x
Example: C5
P - Make the entry proper case (capitalize first
letter)
U - Make the entry all upper case
L - Make the entry all lower case
Rx,y - Accept only values that are in the range x to y.
Example: R1,100
Some more examples combining the above options:
;?5,15;C2;P;
Locate the field at column 5, row 15 set the color to 1
(blue), and make the entry proper case.
;?10,22;C$12;R-1,10000;
Locate the field at column 10, row 22, set the color to 1
(blue), and limit numeric entries to the range -1 to
10,000.
3. A new command line switch was implemented, to allow the user
to limit the amount if expanded memory used by the program.
(In earlier versions, ALL detected expanded memory would be
used). The command line switch is:
/XM=nnn
where nnn is the number of 16K pages of EMS to be used. For
example, using /XM=10 would instruct the program to only
use 16k * 10 = 160K of expanded memory.
The limit is 500 pages (8 Mb).
4. A modification was made so that when a user uses the /NE
command line switch (No Expanded), the program does NOT use
expanded memory to load the overlays, as well. Instead, the
overlays are loaded from disk as needed.
5. Two new information screens were added to the program.
The /Sheet, Status command now displays important information
regarding the user's Hardware, Memory Usage, Command Line
Switches active, etc. The /Graphics, Metrics screen displays
important information regarding the current graph settings,
Print Device, etc.
6. If a cell containing a real value greater that 9.9E+14, is
formatted using the fixed format option, then the cell displays
!!!!!!!! as an indication to the user that the selected
format is inappropriate. The display may be reset by either
formatting the cell using the Scientific format, or by
resetting the cell format (/RFR command).
7. One of the new features of AS-EASY-AS is its ability to plot
functions, not just discrete data. This is done using an expression
based on an internal variable, @X, as one or more of the intended Y-
Ranges. Please note the following:
- The Y-Ranges should be defined as a SINGLE cell containing a
formula using the @X variable.
- The Y-Range scale should be manually set, unless one, or more, of
the Y-Data ranges is made up of discrete data.
Example: Cell Contents Comments
~~~~ ~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~
A1 1 X-Data
A2 2 ''
A3 3 ''
A4 4 ''
A5 5 ''
B1 +2*@X^2 Function
1. Set X-Range to A1..A5 (Use the /GRX command sequence)
2. Set A-Data Range to B1 (Use the /GRA command sequence)
Note: Single cell used as the A-Data range!
3. Set the Y-Scale to manual (Use the /GSYM command sequence)
4. Set the Upper Y-Scale to 30 (Use the /GSYU command sequence)
5. View the graph (use the /GV command sequence)
Modification in Release 5.50B
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A. A modification was made to accommodate users who have a need to access
files created with Version 4.00 (and may be early releases of version
5.00) of AS-EASY-AS.
If you access .WKS files created (and last saved) with Version 4.00,
it is possible that 0 values in your worksheet will appear as an
exponential value with a very large, negative exponent. In order to
avoid that, start the program using the /4 command line switch, e.g.,
ASEASY /4
If the .WKS file is then saved with version 5.50 of AS-EASY-AS, it
will be automatically converted so you will not need the /4
command line switch when you access the file again. (Note that if
the file was created/saved with version 5.01c and later, you do not
need to use the /4 command line switch).
B. A problem was corrected with @MOD function that might force the
program into a loop if a value larger that a long integer was used as
an argument.
C. A modification was made to the Bar and Stacked Bar graphs so that the
lower axes limits are not forced to zero if Logarithmic scales are
selected.
D. A correction was made to the on-line help facilities, to avoid
temporary, miscellaneous string corruption of some help screens.
E. A modification was made to the /File, Import, Dbase, Browse module to
accommodate files containing more that 31000 records.
F. The /Data, Question, Extract command was modified so that it
now Erases any data in the output range prior to extracting the
New data.
Modification in Release 5.50C
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. The VM (virtual memory) module was modified so that the program
now checks to see if the designated disk has enough free room to
accomodate the VM size requested by the user.
2. A new command line switch /N486, was incorporated to eliminate
problems with some users with 486 systems. This command bypasses
specific instructions in the program that mask error trapping
for the math co-processor.
3. A modification was made to the program so that if it is started
with the /UK command line switch, the /File, Import, Dbase
command imports dates in format type #5 (DD/MM/YY).
4. A correction was made to permit the use of different decimal and
thousand separators (instead of the period and comma), under User,
Install, Punctuation.
5. The Data Regression module was modified in order to eliminate some
problems when loading files with regressed data. In some cases,
due to a divide by zero condition, cells with regressed data would
contain INF (for infinite). Another correction was made so that
the program does not result in a divide by zero condition when no
X-range (or an ALL zero X-range) is specified.
6. A correction was made so that WKS files with multiple views open
retain the multiple views when saved and the retrieved again.
7. A modification was made to the Data Input Form routines to
correct an error that would exclude singly referenced heading
cells from the input form list.
8. A problem was corrected in the Data, Sort routines that might
cause the program to crash if multiple sort operations were
performed on the same data range, during the same session
9. A modification was made to the @DATE function to correctly display
years 2000+ instead of displaying 100+.
10. A corrections was made to allow the program to read all
information in named graph records, when loading a WKS file.
Modification in Release 5.50D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. A modification was made to permit the program to import DBF files
with string field lengths greater than the AS-EASY-AS maximum column
width of 72 characters.
2. A new font file is now distributed with the program, which contains
definitions for an addidional 16 high-bit ASCII characters
(French, German,...)
3. A modification was made to save the Data Regression selections with
the WKS file. Note that this information is only accessible by AS-
EASY-AS. If the file is retrieved and saved using another WKS
compatible program, it will be lost, because other spreadsheet
programs cannot use/access/store this information.
4. The {SCRNOFF} and {MENUOFF} macros were modified so that when active
they do not permit the file selection menu and the status indicator
to appear on the screen when invoking File Retrieve, Merge, etc.
5. A modification was made to the macro parser that eliminates the
problem of successively invoking macros within macros.
6. A correction was made to the operation of the /Data, Question,
FindRec, so that it now does not ignore logical ORs within the
criteria range.
7. A modification was made to correct the problem of specifying the /VM=
switch within a configuration file. It would sometimes not take
effect until the second time you started the program.
8. A minor modification was made to make sure the screen would be
updated after every Row/Column Insert or Delete command invocation.
9. A modification was made to the Data Regression model so that
overflow or underflow conditions, when using higher order functions,
would be trapped and not result in incorrect R**2 calculations or the
inability to display the regressed function and curve.
10. A correction was made to permit printing of the contents of contour
graphs (only the outline would be printed in earlier versions).
11. A minor modification was made to make the Inset, CapsLock, NumLock
keys active while in the Edit mode.
12. The program was modified to permit 40 characters for graph titles (the
40th character would be truncated before), and 20 characters for
legend titles (same behavior as above).
13. The operation of /Sheet, Text, Replace command was modified so it
does not go into an infinite loop while replacing like characters.
14. The help engine was modified to correctly sort all index entries and
avoid the occurrence of some entries twice.
15. A correction was made to the Print, Preview routine to avoid
problems if the image was scrolled while viewing a text/graph
combination in half size.
