  75.    GETTING STARTED
  76.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  77.    The information provided below is to help you start the program for 
  78.    your hardware configuration.  For more details about the operation of 
  79.    the program press the F1 (function) key once you have started the 
  80.    program.

  82.    The following files are absolutely essential to run AS-EASY-AS:
  83.  
  84.    ASEASY.EXE  ASEASY.MSG  ASEASY.MNU  ASEASY.FNT
  85.  
  86.    These  files need to reside in the same sub-directory.  In 
  87.    addition to that, if the files ASEASY.HLP, ASEASY.PRT, and 
  88.    ASEASY.CFG are going to be used, they HAVE to reside in the same 
  89.    (ASEASY) directory as well.

  92.     AS-EASY-AS is started from DOS using the command:
  93.

  104.     /ATT     - Enables ATT display graphics, video mode $48

  125.     /NW      - Use Nth bin model rather than Nth+1 (default)
  126.     /Q       - Quick screen updating for CGA
  127.     /RA      - Round Absolute (e.g. 1.6 to 2., -1.6 to -2.)
  128.     /UK      - Set the currency to £ and @DATE to DD/MM/YY
  129.     /VM=nnn  - Use Virtual (disk) EMS model, nnn-Pages (4k each)
  130.     /VP=Path - Set Path for Virtual (disk) memory File 
  131.     /V1      - Force CGA Emulation (normally on VGA Monitor)
  132.     /XM=nnn  - Use only nnn pages of EMS (each page is 16K)

  135.      A> ASEASY /E/DIR=C:\Data [ENTER]
  136.      Starts AS-EASY-AS for an EGA type monitor, and instructs the 
  137.      program that the data files will be located on drive C, 
  138.      in subdirectory "Data".

  183.    To Install on Floppy or Hard Disk:  
  184.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  185.    Although the program will work if installed on 360k diskettes, we 
  186.    recommend that the program is installed either on a hard disk, or a 
  187.    high density floppy diskette, since this will permit the help file, 
  188.    the printer setup files, and other auxiliary files, to be available 
  189.    to the user.  
  190.  
  191.    *  If you Install and run AS-EASY-AS from a floppy disk, without      
  192.    *  Expanded memory (EMS), or if the /NE command line switch is        
  193.    *  used, and you remove the AS-EASY-AS program disk from  
  194.    *  the drive while the program is running, you will get an 
  195.    *  error message and will be instructed to re-insert the disk.
  196.    
  197.    If installing on 360k disks, you need to have at least two 360 
  198.    drives, e.g., A and B.  You cannot install the program on a 
  199.    computer with a single 360 K disk drive and no Hard Disk!  
  200.  
  201.   * Place the AS-EASY-AS original diskette in drive A: (or B:)
  202.  
  203.   * Make sure the current logged drive is A: (Type A:, or B:, and 
  204.     press ENTER, if it is not).
  205.   
  206.   * Type INSTALL and press [ENTER].  Then, follow the simple on-screen 
  207.     instructions to install your copy of the program on the desired disk(s) 
  208.     and/or subdirectory.
  209.  
  210.     Note: If you are installing on 360K floppy disks, you will 
  211.           need multiple blank formatted diskettes!

  214.    On-Disk Documentation
  215.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  216.    The installation process extracts a file called ASEASY.MAN.  This is a 
  217.    ready-to-print formatted, User's manual for the program.  
  218.  
  219.    Following the installation, make sure that the ASEASY.MAN file is 
  220.    indeed on your default directory.  Then, to print this manual: 
  221.  
  222.    (1)  Make sure that the your printer is ON  and there is enough 
  223.         paper in it (the manual is about 102 pages).
  224.  
  225.    (2)  From the DOS prompt, type
  226.  
  227.         COPY ASEASY.MAN PRN and press [ENTER]
  228.  
  229.         Note that if your printer is connected to a SERIAL port,
  230.         then you need to use the command  COPY ASEASY.MAN COM1, or
  231.         COPY ASEASY.MAN COM2 (depending on which serial port your 
  232.         printer is connected to).

  236.    New Features/User's Manual Changes  -  AS-EASY-AS Ver. 5.50
  237.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  238. 1. On some systems (in particular older 486 CPU systems), you 
  239.    might experience difficulties running AS-EASY-AS v5.5 in 
  240.    windowed mode, under MS Windows 3.1.  In order to avoid such 
  241.    difficulties, make sure you create a .PIF file to run the 
  242.    program (check your Windows manual for info on .PIF files).  
  243.    When setting up the .PIF file, make sure the minimum 
  244.    conventional RAM requirement is set to at least 400K and, 
  245.    also, make sure that the EXCLUSIVE operation box has been 
  246.    selected.
  247.  
  248.    If you are still having difficulties, you might need to turn 
  249.    the 80387 off and use the program's 80387 emulation instead.  
  250.    To do that, prior to running Windows, at the DOS prompt, type  
  251.    'SET 87=N' (without the quotes) and press [ENTER]. 
  252.   
  253. 2. The Data, Input, Form command has been significantly 
  254.    enhanced.  For starters, the number of fields that may be 
  255.    defined, is no longer limited to 20.  When AS-EASY-AS is run 
  256.    in Graphics modes, up to 50 fields may be used with the Data, 
  257.    Input, Form.
  258.  
  259.    Furthermore, the cell immediately above each field, may now 
  260.    contain a number of field characteristics, as described below.  
  261.    Please, note that the basic operation of the command has not 
  262.    changed, i.e., only the row containing the field definitions 
  263.    needs to be highlighted, NOT THE LINE ABOVE IT!
  264.  
  265.    The field characteristics contained in each cell are separated 
  266.    by a semi-colon. The cell entry also starts and ends with a 
  267.    semi-colon.  Here are the various options available:
  268.  
  269.       ?c,r   -  Locate the field at column(c) and row(r).
  270.                 Example:  ?10,5
  271.       
  272.       Cx     -  Set the color for this input field to x  
  273.                 Example: C5
  274.       
  275.       P      -  Make the entry proper case (capitalize first 
  276.                 letter)
  277.  
  278.       U      -  Make the entry all upper case
  279.       
  280.       L      -  Make the entry all lower case
  281.        
  282.       Rx,y   -  Accept only values that are in the range x to y.
  283.                 Example:  R1,100
  284.  
  285.    Some more examples combining the above options:
  286.  
  287.       ;?5,15;C2;P;      
  288.           Locate the field at column 5, row 15 set the color to 1 
  289.           (blue), and make the entry proper case.
  290.    
  291.       ;?10,22;C$12;R-1,10000;
  292.           Locate the field at column 10, row 22, set the color to 1
  293.           (blue), and limit numeric entries to the range -1 to 
  294.           10,000.

  296.  
  297. 3. A new command line switch was implemented, to allow the user 
  298.    to limit the amount if expanded memory used by the program.  
  299.    (In earlier versions, ALL detected expanded memory would be 
  300.    used).  The command line switch is:
  301.    
  302.                              /XM=nnn
  303.    
  304.    where nnn is the number of 16K pages of EMS to be used.  For 
  305.    example,  using  /XM=10  would instruct the program to only 
  306.    use 16k * 10 = 160K of expanded memory.
  307.   
  308.    The limit is 500 pages (8 Mb).   
  309.  
  310. 4. A modification was made so that when a user uses the /NE 
  311.    command line switch (No Expanded), the program does NOT use 
  312.    expanded memory to load the overlays, as well.  Instead, the 
  313.    overlays are loaded from disk as needed.
  314.  
  315. 5. Two new information screens were added to the program.  
  316.    The /Sheet, Status command now displays important information 
  317.    regarding the user's Hardware, Memory Usage, Command Line 
  318.    Switches active, etc.   The /Graphics, Metrics screen displays 
  319.    important information regarding the current graph settings, 
  320.    Print Device, etc.
  321.  
  322. 6. If a cell containing a real value greater that 9.9E+14, is 
  323.    formatted using the fixed format option, then the cell displays 
  324.    !!!!!!!!  as an indication to the user that the selected 
  325.    format is inappropriate.  The display may be reset by either 
  326.    formatting the cell using the Scientific format, or by 
  327.    resetting the cell format (/RFR  command).
  328.  
  329. 7. One of the new features of AS-EASY-AS is its ability to plot 
  330.    functions, not just discrete data.  This is done using an expression 
  331.    based on an internal variable, @X, as one or more of the intended Y-
  332.    Ranges.  Please note the following:
  333.  
  334.    -  The Y-Ranges should be defined as a SINGLE cell containing a 
  335.       formula using the @X variable.
  336.       
  337.    -  The Y-Range scale should be manually set, unless one, or more, of 
  338.       the Y-Data ranges is made up of discrete data.

  358. Modification in Release 5.50B
  359. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  360. A. A modification was made to accommodate users who have a need to access 
  361.    files created with Version 4.00 (and may be early releases of version 
  362.    5.00) of AS-EASY-AS. 
  363.  
  364.    If you access .WKS files created (and last saved) with Version 4.00, 
  365.    it is possible that 0 values in your worksheet will appear as an 
  366.    exponential value with a very large, negative exponent.  In order to 
  367.    avoid that, start the program using the  /4 command line switch, e.g., 
  368.  
  369.             ASEASY /4
  370.  
  371.    If the .WKS file is then saved with version 5.50 of AS-EASY-AS, it 
  372.    will be automatically converted so you will not need the /4  
  373.    command line switch when you access the file again.  (Note that if 
  374.    the file was created/saved with version 5.01c and later, you do not 
  375.    need to use the /4 command line switch). 
  376.  
  377. B. A problem was corrected with @MOD function that might force the 
  378.    program into a loop if a value larger that a long integer was used as 
  379.    an argument.
  380.  
  381. C. A modification was made to the Bar and Stacked Bar graphs so that the 
  382.    lower axes limits are not forced to zero if Logarithmic scales are 
  383.    selected.
  384.  
  385. D. A correction was made to the on-line help facilities, to avoid 
  386.    temporary, miscellaneous string corruption of some help screens. 
  387.  
  388. E. A modification was made to the /File, Import, Dbase, Browse module to 
  389.    accommodate files containing more that 31000 records. 
  390.  
  391. F. The /Data, Question, Extract command was modified so that it 
  392.    now Erases any data in the output range prior to extracting the 
  393.    New data.  
  394.  
  395.  
  396. Modification in Release 5.50C
  397. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  398.  1. The VM (virtual memory) module was modified so that the program 
  399.     now checks to see if the designated disk has enough free room to 
  400.     accomodate the VM size requested by the user.
  401.  
  402.  2. A new command line switch /N486, was incorporated to eliminate
  403.     problems with some users with 486 systems.  This command bypasses 
  404.     specific instructions in the program that mask error trapping 
  405.     for the math co-processor.
  406.  
  407.  3. A modification was made to the program so that if it is started 
  408.     with the /UK command line switch, the /File, Import, Dbase 
  409.     command imports dates in format type #5 (DD/MM/YY).
  410.  
  411.  4. A correction was made to permit the use of different decimal and 
  412.     thousand separators (instead of the period and comma), under User, 
  413.     Install, Punctuation.
  414.    
  415.  5. The Data Regression module was modified in order to eliminate some 
  416.     problems when loading files with regressed data.  In some cases, 
  417.     due to a divide by zero condition, cells with regressed data would 
  418.     contain INF (for infinite).  Another correction was made so that 
  419.     the program does not result in a divide by zero condition when no 
  420.     X-range (or an ALL zero X-range) is specified.
  421.  
  422.  6. A correction was made so that WKS files with multiple views open 
  423.     retain the multiple views when saved and the retrieved again.
  424.  
  425.  7. A modification was made to the Data Input Form routines to 
  426.     correct an error that would exclude singly referenced heading 
  427.     cells from the input form list.  
  428.  
  429.  8. A problem was corrected in the Data, Sort routines that might 
  430.     cause the program to crash if multiple sort operations were 
  431.     performed on the same data range, during the same session
  432.    
  433.  9. A modification was made to the @DATE function to correctly display 
  434.     years 2000+ instead of displaying 100+. 
  435.  
  436. 10. A corrections was made to allow the program to read all 
  437.     information in named graph records, when loading a WKS file.
  438.

  440. Modification in Release 5.50D
  441. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  442.  1. A modification was made to permit the program to import DBF files 
  443.     with string field lengths greater than the AS-EASY-AS maximum column 
  444.     width of 72 characters. 
  445.  
  446.  2. A new font file is now distributed with the program, which contains 
  447.     definitions for an addidional 16 high-bit ASCII characters 
  448.     (French, German,...)
  449.  
  450.  3. A modification was made to save the Data Regression selections with 
  451.     the WKS file.  Note that this information is only accessible by AS-
  452.     EASY-AS.  If the file is retrieved and saved using another WKS 
  453.     compatible program, it will be lost, because other spreadsheet 
  454.     programs cannot use/access/store this information.
  455.  
  456.  4. The {SCRNOFF} and {MENUOFF} macros were modified so that when active 
  457.     they do not permit the file selection menu and the status indicator 
  458.     to appear on the screen when invoking File Retrieve, Merge, etc.
  459.  
  460.  5. A modification was made to the macro parser that eliminates the 
  461.     problem of successively invoking macros within macros.
  462.  
  463.  6. A correction was made to the operation of the /Data, Question, 
  464.     FindRec, so that it now does not ignore logical ORs within the 
  465.     criteria range.
  466.  
  467.  7. A modification was made to correct the problem of specifying the /VM= 
  468.     switch within a configuration file.  It would sometimes not take 
  469.     effect until the second time you started the program.
  470.  
  471.  8. A minor modification was made to make sure the screen would be 
  472.     updated after every Row/Column Insert or Delete command invocation.
  473.  
  474.  9. A modification was made to the Data Regression model so that 
  475.     overflow or underflow conditions, when using higher order functions, 
  476.     would be trapped and not result in incorrect R**2 calculations or the 
  477.     inability to display the regressed function and curve.
  478.  
  479. 10. A correction was made to permit printing of the contents of contour 
  480.     graphs (only the outline would be printed in earlier versions).
  481.  
  482. 11. A minor modification was made to make the Inset, CapsLock, NumLock 
  483.     keys active while in the Edit mode. 
  484.  
  485. 12. The program was modified to permit 40 characters for graph titles (the 
  486.     40th character would be truncated before), and 20 characters for 
  487.     legend titles (same behavior as above).

  489. 13. The operation of /Sheet, Text, Replace command was modified  so it 
  490.     does not go into an infinite loop while replacing like characters.
  491.  
  492. 14. The help engine was modified to correctly sort all index entries and 
  493.     avoid the occurrence of some entries twice.
  494.  
  495. 15. A correction was made to the Print, Preview routine to avoid 
  496.     problems if the image was scrolled while viewing a text/graph 
  497.     combination in half size.
