Prompts
-------
Throughout the CompuServe Information Service, you will frequently be prompted
to make a choice, enter information or issue a command. The most common
indicator of a prompt is an !. When you see an exclamation point at the end of
a line, there are certain basic commands that will always work.
At some places in the Service, you will see different prompts such as : or >.
In these cases, only certain or different commands may apply.
Basic Commands
--------------
The following commands will work at any ! prompt:
T returns you to the TOP screen of the CompuServe menu.
M returns you to the previous MENU page.
H (or ?) displays a HELP message.
OFF ends your session and disconnects you from the system.
If the prompt character is not an exclamation point, the above commands may
need to be preceded by a / such as /T.
The GO command
--------------
At any ! prompt, GO followed by a destination sends you directly to the
destination you specified. Valid destinations are typically found in the upper
right hand corner of each screen, but there are also various additional "quick
reference words" that can be used.
Some useful GO commands are:
GO BILLING
GO FEEDBACK
GO MAIL
GO ORDER
GO PHONES (access numbers)
GO PROFILE (user settings)
GO QUICK (a list of quick reference words)
Control Characters
------------------
Certain control characters are used as commands.
You normally send a control character to CompuServe by holding down a key
marked "CTRL" and simultaneously pressing another key. Some keyboards do not
have a key marked "CTRL" and if yours does not, you should refer to the
operating instructions supplied with your computer to determine how to send a
control character.
Some important control commands are:
CTRL/C
------
Interrupts (usually permanently) whatever is in process. You are then usually
given a list of actions to choose from.
CTRL/O
------
Discards output in progress. It may sometimes also suppress the next prompt. If
you do not get a prompt, press the carriage return key.
CTRL/S & CTRL/Q
---------------
These two control character commands are used alternatively to temporarily stop
and then restart output. CTRL/S stops output and CTRL/Q starts it again at the
point it was stopped.
These commands are most often used when output is being presented continuously
(scrolled) rather than a page at a time.
Try using CTRL/S and CTRL/Q as we send you the information that follows this
page.
The FIND command
----------------
At most ! prompts, you may enter FIND followed by a blank space and a word.
This will search through the CompuServe index of services for the word you have
specified and will display a menu of references. For example:
FIND IBM
would produce a menu of CompuServe services that are indexed under the word
IBM.
How to get HELP
---------------
Many products and services include online help and instructions.
Type HELP (or ?) at any ! prompt.
If your subscription package did not include a CompuServe Users Guide, you
should purchase one as soon as possible. Enter GO ORDER at any ! prompt.
CompuServe Customer Service is also available to answer questions.
You can send your questions via electronic mail to Customer Service through our
FEEDBACK system. NOTE: connect time while in FEEDBACK is free. You will get a
response via EasyPlex (our electronic mail system).

(614) 457-8650 from Ohio and outside the continental U.S.A.

Security
--------
Protect the confidentiality of your PASSWORD!
Read the following carefully.
Just as there are pickpockets on the streets, there are unscrupulous people who
may attempt to steal your password and you are responsible for all usage on
your User ID number. A password thief can run up a large bill on your account
in a matter of days.
Do NOT keep your password in the same place as your User ID number. Change your
password regularly (enter GO PASSWORD at any ! prompt).
Beware of attempts by others to have you reveal your password. No one from
CompuServe should ever call you and ask you for your password. If you
demonstrate CompuServe to anybody, always change your password afterwards.
Once you have logged into CompuServe you will not be asked to enter your User
ID number and password again while logged on. If you appear to have been
disconnected and receive a prompt for User ID, be sure to hang up the phone and
redial.
If you think someone has obtained your password, change it immediately!
Thank you for your attention during this initialization process. You now have
the choice of taking our mini-tour to familiarize you with our services, or
youmay go directly to the CompuServe Information Service. (You may take the
mini-tour any time by entering GO TOURS at any ! prompt.)
