■ Overview
The Donations Encourager is a program designed to assist SysOps in getting
donations from their users. I know what SysOps go through to keep their BBSs
online, and sometimes users need a little extra encouragement to contribute to
the cause. Hence this program, Donations Encourager. With it, your users will
see a message highlighting their name as a non-donator and then a delay for a
SysOp-specified amount of time, or if they have donated they will receive a
special thank-you message. There is also an option to make a user "exempt" from
seeing either message, for people like the SysOp who don't want to waste their
time waiting for the delay to run out and don't want to see a message of
thanks.
■ Setup
DE is easy to setup. The following files were included:
DE MEC - The MECCA program displaying the donation message
DEPAUSE BBS - Sample 5-second delay linked after DE
DESETUP MEC - The DE SysOp control program for customizing & maintaining DE
The *.MEC files above should be compiled using MECCA and then all 3 files
should be moved to your main BBS directory (usually \MAX). Next, install the
two main files as shown below:
─ End of WELCOME.MEC ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
...
[link]\Max\DE
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
..and..
─ MENUS.CTL ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Menu SysOp
...
Display_File \Max\DESetup SysOp "*DE Setup"
...
End Menu
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Then compile your WELCOME.MEC with MECCA, and your MENUS.CTL with SILT, and
DE is all set. You can also insert DESETUP as a Function-key macro if you wish.
■ Warranty
None. This software is free, so why should I support it? What you do with
it is your business; I am never held responsible for any problems "caused"
by use of this program.
■ DESetup Commands
[1] Set Donations Msg Delay Time - Change pause length after DE
[2] Thank a Donating User - Remove Delay/Msg from a User & Thank
[3] Make a User Exempt - Remove Delay/Msg from a User w/o Thanks msg
[4] Test out DE - View sample DE screen
[?] Help - Online summary of commands
[Q] Quit - Exit from DE Installation
■ About Option [1]: Set Donations Msg Delay Time
This option allows you to change the length of the pause given to the user
after displaying the donations screen (i.e., after displaying DE.BBS). Valid
times are from .5 - 10 seconds. Examples: 0.5, 1.0, 7, 9.5, 10. This creates
or overwrites the DEPAUSE.BBS file, linked by DE.BBS when finished displaying
the message. A sample DEPAUSE.BBS, included in this package, is set for the
default pause time of 5 seconds. Change it if you wish.
■ About Option [2]: Thank a Donating User
When a user of yours finally catches on and decides to send you a contribu-
tion, they no longer deserve the annoying message and frustrating delay. They
also deserve a message of thanks commemorating them for their donations. So
when you receive their money, fire up DESETUP and enter either their name
WITHOUT SPACES (Examples: JOEUSER instead of Joe User), or their user number
where the SysOp's number starts at 0. Then when they log on, the message and
delay are gone and in their place is a special thanks.
■ About Option [3]: Make a User Exempt
Then there are the special occasions where a user isn't required to donate
(such as for CoSysOps or something) and therefore don't want to see either
the msg/delay OR the thanks msg. When this is the case, follow the same
instructions here as with option #2 and when they log on, they will not even
suspect DE is passing them by. Another method of removing either message from
the "authorities" is to put a line like [abelow link]DE in your WELCOME.MEC
and only those Asst-SysOp or below will see the message.
■ About Option [4]: Test out DE
This simply loads the DE.BBS screen for a test-drive of how it will look.
Note that if the user you are on as is marked as Exempt or Donating, you
will either see nothing or the thank-you message.
■ About MecWare
MecWare is my software "company". I, Chris Dornfeld, am the only member as
of now. I produce programs written in Maximus MECCA language for the
convenience of Maximus SysOps and for the needs of myself. Many of my
programs, such as this one, were written with release into a major file
network such as SDS in mind. Many of my previous programs can be found in
the SDS still. I don't run my own BBS as of yet, but by October when I have
a new computer my BBS (which is finished now as for software) will go online.
I may or may not choose to support MecWare on it.
■ Note from the Author
Thanks for taking the time to view this doc. I worked rather hard on the
program included here, and your support is appreciated. If you have any
problems or suggestions, leave me a note in most FidoNet Maximus-related
echoes. And watch for future releases!!
* You are free to modify this program to your liking, as long as it is only
distributed in its true, unmodified form!
