Configuring Archecker for Use
This document assumes that you are a first-time-user-evaluator or the
program Archecker. It will help you get everything configured and setup.
Getting Started
Before you begin, a little preparation will save headaches later. Since
you are reading this, we will assume that you have NOT read the big file,
AC.DOC. If you are indeed trying for a Super Quick Start, do at least
these steps before running ACCFG.EXE:
If you are a registered user reinstalling AC, or are trying to correct
a screwed-up AC.CFG file, make sure you take a moment to write down your
Serial Number/Password, and your name as spelled in AC.CFG. ACCFG.EXE
does NOT transfer this info into the new AC.CFG generated, and DOES
overwrite the old file with the new.
Make sure you have the required archive engines in your PATH before you
start. This includes PKZIP, PKUNZIP, ARJ, PAK, LHA, and SCAN.
If these are all in your PATH, ACCFG will do most of the configuration
for you automatically. If you omit this step, you will probably have
to break out of ACCFG.EXE and go find the pathnames for the archivers
you want to use. If you skip the manual fall-through which comes
online when ACCFG.EXE can't find the archivers in the PATH, by using
carriage returns or blank lines or whatever, AC will NOT check that
particular archive format-it will stay locked out until you re-run
ACCFG.EXE and put in the required info, or use a text editor to insert
the info directly into AC.CFG.
If you are like me, you may be reading this through SHEZ/LIST, and while
you are here, take a moment to unZIP the DUMMY.CMT file into the root
directory of the drive you want to install AC on. This will save you
having to break out of ACCFG.EXE and restart, so you can go find a
suitable comment file, in case you don't care to use a customized archive
comment. If you DO use archive comments, make sure you know the EXACT
pathname for the default comment file-the configuration program will
run over and check the file's exist status before it lets you continue.
Make sure you know what version of SCAN you are using-the configuration
executable will ask for this, as it is used in the archive comment in some
cases, in the main logfile, and in reports to the screen. It is NOT a
good idea to put a blank line in this area of the logfile.
If you are wanting to change the contents of AC.CFG, it is MUCH simpler
to use a TXT editor for just one or two changes-you will not have to
re-register the program with PUTREG.EXE that way.
