  29. The Relics of Our Generation

  32. With bloodshot eyes, I present to you Dark Domain; the most comprehensive
  33. artscene compilation to date.
  34.  
  35. This library is an accumulation of artistic and literary works born from
  36. the creative minds of the IBM-PC underground with pieces dating all the
  37. way back to the late 1980s.  Just as I have spent so many countless late
  38. nights maintaining and compiling this collection, so have so many others
  39. done the same creating, packaging, trading, viewing and discussing the
  40. very elements that make it.  
  41.  
  42. Dark Domain breaks out into four main sets: artpacks, loaders, mags, and
  43. programs.  Also included is the legacy HTML from the formerly web enabled
  44. version of artpacks.acid.org and several other hidden easter eggs.
  45.  
  46. Artpacks, being the main focus here, is easily the most thorough
  47. collection of the quartet.  The artpacks phenomenon began in 1992 when
  48. competing groups began releasing monthly packages of ANSI art.  As 
  49. technology evolved, these packages transformed in to virtually anything
  50. digitally artistic and packed into a single ZIP or RAR file for
  51. distribution.
  52.  
  53. Loaders, the very root of the demoscene, have been disturbingly
  54. overlooked by a sizeable segment of the underground.  Known also as
  55. intros, or cracktros (a crack intro), loaders are traditionally programs
  56. that load in advance of a piece of pirated software.  These programs
  57. serve as graphical advertisements, prominently displaying the name of
  58. the cracker and affiliated cracking group.  Over time, these loaders
  59. have progressed from static images to sophisticated splash screens
  60. containing complex 3D animation, special effects and music.
  61.  
  62. Mags, as the name implies, are electronic magazines (also known as
  63. diskmags) which examine the full gamut of the underground's various
  64. interconnecting worlds; ANSI, ASCII, BBS modding, coding, demos,
  65. module tracking, warez, et cetera.  The vast majority of these 'zines
  66. are executables written for Microsoft DOS or Windows, but some are
  67. plain ASCII text, colored ANSI or HTML.

  69. Last is the Programs directory which is geared largely towards various
  70. IBM-PC platforms, hosting a variety of tools for de/compressing ZIP and
  71. RAR archives, graphic editors/viewers, drivers and source code for the
  72. same.

  74. Since 1996, the ACiD Artpacks Archive has served as a cornerstone of the
  75. digital artscene, and has been the single most stable resource to 
  76. retrieve artpacks, related magazines and software utilities.  A tribute
  77. of our own success has been how many present-day archives have used 
  78. subsets of artpacks.acid.org as a foundation for the creation of their
  79. own.  Just as we called upon distinguished BBSes from the past to begin
  80. ours.

  82. It is not uncommon at all for me to receive sincerely appreciative
  83. letters from people, thanking me profusely for preserving an important
  84. file (or files) which they had lost somehow and had been desperately
  85. searching for -- emails from the very same SysOp or group leader who had
  86. originally uploaded them to our site years ago.
  87.  
  88. That was precisely what I had hoped this archive would accomplish.
  89.  
  90. As encompassing as our archive is, it is not complete.  It never has 
  91. been, it never will be.  Even in the final days of creating the Dark
  92. Domain gold master, I've been adding batches of files daily, some of
  93. which date back as far as 1994.  It is encouraging to know that there
  94. are others out there; Black Jack, Erekose, Jack Phlash, Jason Scott,
  95. Lord Scarlet, Redhound, Snowman, Toast and so many others who share
  96. (and have shared) the ambitious goal of not just archiving the present,
  97. but drilling down to recover the past like scene archaeologists.

  99. Nothing would please me more to see the contents of this DVD 
  100. perpetuated; couriered as an ISO on FTPs, distributed as a Torrent,
  101. hosted on IRC DCC servers, traded at parties, posted up as some multi-
  102. part archive on Usenet, or used by siteops to augment their own archive.
  103. Maybe one day this and other collections will be tucked away on some 
  104. Blu-Ray disc, silicon brain chip or some succeeding media which we've
  105. yet to imagine.
