Of A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS
I was sitting, watching TV in my bedroom after finishing The Divine
Invasion by Phillip K Dick... So I threw on one of my all-time favorite
movies, A Fistful of Dollars, directed by Sergio Leone, music by Ennio
Morricone, starring Clint Eastwood, Gian Maria Volonte, and Marianne Koch...
And I began to have a mystical vision... The movie, a rip-off of Yojimbo,
always seemed filled with something that threatened to erupt from under the
surface... There is something deep underlying this movie and then it
happened... It is a version of the Pistis Sophia myth, a gnostic allegory
about the redemption of the world... Eastwood corresponds to the redeemer, the
son or messenger of the alien god, the creator of the creator, who wanders into
a town that sybolises creation. There are two opposing clans, the Baxters and
the Rojos, gun merchants and liquor traders, respectively, symbolizing stern
judgement and passion, respectively... These are the two extremities in
creation, and account for the tug and tide, vibration, sway of the pendulum...
Eastwood plays these against each other, and in the process liberates a woman
who can only symbolise the Sophia, the saint and the prostitute, the wisdom of
God that was lost in the accident of creation... she is held hostage by a man
who took her from her rightful place in his misguided love for her. Marisol,
Mary of the Sun, the sun sybolizing the infinite light and identified with
Eastwood in the opening credits by a superimposure. She has a son, Jesus, who
desperately wants to liberate her... A Eastwood does... Jesus is the
redeemer as the sun... And IS EASTWOOD. The boy and the stranger,
(Eastwood's character has no name) are the same person. To make a long story
short, Eastwood frees Marisol and reunites her with her husband (who
represents the creator in his original form before the accident, a good
father) and son...
"Marisol: Why you do this for us?"
Eastwood: Why? Because I knew someone like you once, and there was no
one there to help. Now get movin'"
After freeing the Holy Family, the catalyst is apprehended and gets the
shit knocked out of him... Is crucified, basically... But he sneaks away, and
the inflamed Rojos try to seek him out... At the end of the movie, in the
final shootout, Eastwood rolls into town in a cloud of dust, is shot repeatedly
and is immortal... Until he removes his makeshift bullet-proof armor plate,
thereby making himself vulnerable, and duels with Ramon... The devil himself,
the angel who fell through lust for human women, the Nephilim. He disproves an
old proverb "When a man with a 45 meets a man with a rifle, the man with the
pistol will be a dead man." But Eastwood is not dead, he is alive and Ramon
perishes in a vision of looking towards the sun and then Eastwood... The
disproving of the proverb is the old Law passing away... And the old order.
In the end the elect are alive, the widows, the good people, the Holy Family.
The town is cleansed... Everyone in the both clans is dead. This is the
Redemption... And the Holy Family will re-populate the earth and there will be
no more suffering and no more death, for the former things have passed away...
With the creation process purified and the extremities gone... But this is
only a glimpse... At the end of the movie Eastwood compares the two clans with
the Mexican government and the American Government, symbolizing yet another
duality to reconcile... And the divine game goes on...
I am planning to do a full analysis of the movie, with references. The
symbolism is striking, if unintended, but as it shows in the Bible God can even
speak through an ass, so why not through a Spaghetti Western?

Why does Neph always look so pissed off... and tired?
