  8. These scroll fragments were displayed in the exhibit at the Library
  9. of Congress, May - August 1993.  They were provided courtesy of the
  10. Israel Antiquities Authority.  The exhibit captions and
  11. translations (below) provide background on the fragments and their
  12. relationships with the other Dead Sea Scrolls, the Qumran
  13. Community, and its Library.

  28.      The Damascus Document is a collection of rules and
  29. instructions reflecting the practices of a sectarian community.  It
  30. includes two elements.  The first is an admonition that implores
  31. the congregation to remain faithful to the covenant of those who
  32. retreated from Judea to the "Land of Damascus."  The second lists
  33. statutes dealing with vows and oaths, the tribunal, witnesses and
  34. judges, purification of water, Sabbath laws, and ritual
  35. cleanliness.  The right-hand margin is incomplete.  The left-hand
  36. margin was sewn to another piece of parchment, as evidenced by the
  37. remaining stitches.

  39.      In 1896, noted Talmud scholar and educator Solomon Schechter
  40. discovered sectarian compositions which later were found to be
  41. medieval versions of the Damascus Document.  Schechter's find in a
  42. synagogue storeroom near Cairo, almost fifty years before the
  43. Qumran discoveries, may be regarded as the true starting point of
  44. modern scroll research.

  108.      This six-line fragment, commonly referred to as the "Pierced
  109. Messiah" text, is written in a Herodian script of the first half of
  110. the first century C.E. and refers to a Messiah from the Branch of
  111. David, to a judgement, and to a killing.  
  112.  
  113.      Hebrew is comprised primarily of consonants; vowels must be
  114. supplied by the reader.  The appropriate vowels depend on the
  115. context.  Thus, the text (line 4) may be translated as "and the
  116. Prince of the Congregation, the Branch of David, will kill him," or
  117. alternately read as "and they killed the Prince." Because of the
  118. second reading, the text was dubbed the "Pierced Messiah."  The
  119. transcription and translation presented here support the "killing
  120. Messiah" interpretation, alluding to a triumphant Messiah (Isaiah
  121. 11:4).
