QUICKCONNECT
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
QuickConnect (formerly known as C.O. LAN) is an intraLATA local and wide area
data connectivity service, primarily designed to provide simultaneous
switched voice and data transport over existing telephone lines. It can be
used to link personal computers, terminals, PC LANs, and hot minicomputers
through the Public Switched Network.
QuickConnect supports Asynchronous, Bisynchronous, SDLC, HDLC, X.25, DEC
DDCMP, and other various protocols. One of the chief benefits of this broad
protocols support is that QuickConnect helps an MIS director to simplify and
efficiently network multi-vendor data resources.
A variety of customer interfaces have been developed that support the
tariffed QuickConnect capabilities, and extend them considerably (especially
in the area of LAN bridging). They include, but are not limited to:
- Voice Data Multiplexers (VDMs), which provide the simultaneous voice
and data capability of the QuickConnect primary service.
- DECXpress Gateway to Digital Equipment LANs.
- Network Interface Kit, providing access to QuickConnect for Internet
Protocol (IP) based LANs.
- Synchronous/asynchronous multiplexers (SAMs) provide concentration
of lines from the customer's premises to the central office.
- Ethernet Bridging Concentrators used for bridging up to eight Ethernet
(IEEE 802.3) LANs.
- Token Ring Bridging/Gateway, opening the door for GTE to serve "IBM
shops."
As with any data networking system, communication software is used to set the
parameters of the transmission. QuickConnect is compatible with most
commercially available communications software packages, including (but not
limited to) Crosstalk, Kermit, Yterm, Smartcom and Blast.
A Voice Data Multiplexer (VDM) is used to derive a channel above the voice
band on the analog R1/B1/PBX facility. It provides up to 19.2 Kbps
asynchronous or 9.6 Kbps synchronous data transmission.
A prerequisite to the primary QuickConnect service is the installation of an
analog access line (R1/B1/PBX Trunk or the existence of a previously
installed line).
QuickConnect service will:
Allow the customer to network their data resources in a campus-type
environment or multilocation business setting;
Support asynchronous data terminals including;
- PC-to-PC
- Host computers
- Front-end processors
- Terminals
- Terminal cluster controllers
Support host computers;
Support synchronous data communication between devices including;
- Host computers
- Front-end processors
- Terminals
- Terminal cluster controllers
Support interconnecting of LANs; and
Support modem pooling, both in and outgoing.
QuickConnect was designed to serve a broad spectrum of data networking needs,
including (but not limited to):
- City-wide and inter-city networking of synchronous or asynchronous data
resources.
- Simultaneous voice and data transport over existing LANs through
bridging and gateways.
- Centralized data network management.
- Modem pooling for QuickConnect user access to off-net data
resources and providing QuickConnect access to off-net users.
APPLICATIONS:
- Local and wide area networking
- Point-of-sale networking
- LAN bridging and gateways
- Work at home
