02/22/1993 LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- An off-duty reserve sheriff's
deputy shot and killed one of three women who asked for a lift
Sunday then allegedly tried to rob him and steal his car.
A second suspect was in custody and a third woman got away
despite an intensive search of a East Los Angeles neighborhood where
the shooting occurred shortly before 3 a.m.
Authorities said the women approached the deputy near Atlantic
Boulevard and Verona Street and asked for a ride. He obliged. Three
blocks later, one woman sitting in the passenger's seat pulled a gun
and demanded the deputy's valuables and car, Deputy Victoria
Berenbau said.
The deputy and woman struggled, and the two other women joined
in. The officer stopped the car and got out, only to be confronted
again when the armed woman raced around to the driver's side.
The officer grabbed his own off-duty gun and traded gunfire with
the armed woman, authorities said. The 22-year-old woman was hit in
the upper torso and died at the scene. The deputy, whom authorities
have refused to identify, was treated for minor cuts and bruises.
The deputy was able to prevent one woman from fleeing. Kristina
Rigalardo, 26, of Whittier was booked on suspicion of murder because
the fatal shooting occurred during the commission of a felony,
Berenbau said.
Authorities believe the suspects have gang affiliations, Berenbau
said.
