MILWAUKEE (UPI) -- A high-speed chase ended early Wednesday
morning when the car driven by a man suspected of drunken driving
flipped over a bridge guardrail and fell to a parking lot below,
killing the driver.
Police said Christopher J. Hwilka, 27, was pronounced dead at the
scene.
Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. Samuel Leatherwood said the
chase that ended in Hwilka's death began before 2 a.m. near a West
Allis on- ramp of Interstate 94. Hwilka entered the interstate with
West Allis officers in pursuit. A Milwaukee squad car which was on
the interstate at the time joined the effort.
Sheriff's deputies, who were not involved in the chase, handled
the investigation because the accident occurred on an interstate
highway.
Leatherwood said the officers chased Hwilka eastbound on I-94,
sometimes at speeds as high as 100 mph. At the southbound Hoan
Bridge exit, Hwilka lost control of his car. It flipped over the
guardrail and crashed to the parking lot below. Hwilka was ejected
from the car as it fell, Leatherwood said. He landed about 100 feet
away from his car, which had burst into flames.
Leatherwood said police have since called up Hwilka's traffic
record, which filled a four-foot long computer print-out. He did not
have a valid driver's license.
