CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) -- A suspended policeman was arrested
Wednesday in the overnight shooting deaths of three teen-agers, one
of whom he was charged with assaulting earlier this year, police
said.
Robert Sabetta, 24, was arrested at gunpoint about three hours
after the teens were shot at an auto body shop in Foster in
northwest Rhode Island around midnight. He offered no resistance and
no weapons were recovered, police said.
Killed were Frank Sherman, 16, his 17-year-old brother, Charles,
and Jeremy Bullock, 19. A fourth youth, Darryl Drake, 18, was
critically wounded.
Drake ran up a road and called police from a nearby house. A fifth
person who escaped injury by hiding under a car gave police a
description of a car similar to the one Sabetta was driving, said
state police Capt. Theodore Kidd.
"All he saw were the guy's feet and pant leg," Kidd said. "He
said (the gunman) walked in and said 'You're going to die' and
started shooting."
Sabetta was suspended without pay Jan. 10 after allegedly
striking Frank Sherman during a traffic stop a day earlier, Foster
Police Chief Donald Kettelle said. "Witnesses allege that (Sherman)
was struck with a flashlight and lost a couple of teeth," the chief
said.
Sabetta was arraigned March 31 on a charge of assault with a
deadly weapon and was released on $10,000 personal recognizance,
Kettelle said.
Sabetta's father, Robert Sabetta, himself a former policeman,
arrived at state police headquarters while his son was being
questioned inside.
"Being an ex-police officer, I'm very strong," Sabetta said in a
voice choked with emotion. "I hope to God he didn't do it."
