  2.                        EXHIBIT EXPLANATION
  3.  
  4.      The goals of the "Scrolls from the Dead Sea" exhibition are
  5. three fold:  to enable visitors to see twelve of the Dead Sea
  6. Scroll fragments; to promote greater understanding of the turbulent
  7. period in which the Dead Sea Scrolls were copied; and to provide
  8. some insight into the questions raised and the "mystery"
  9. surrounding this great manuscript find.
  10.  
  11.      The exhibit has an introductory as well as three main
  12. sections:
  13.  
  14.      The introductory area presents the Psalms Scroll, the largest
  15.      of the scroll fragments in the exhibition, and touches on the
  16.      geographical and religious contexts of the period.
  17.  
  18.      "The Qumran Community" examines the region in which the
  19.      scrolls were found, presents the archaeological materials
  20.      uncovered at the Qumran site, and explores the nature of the
  21.      habitation adjacent to the scroll-bearing caves.
  22.  
  23.      The "Qumran Library" is a look at the various scrolls that
  24.      were discovered in the Dead Sea caves.
  25.  
  26.      "Two Thousand Years Later" explores the significance of the
  27.      scrolls to modern scholarship and presents some of the
  28.      questions and controversies that surround them.
  29.  
  30.      The storyline for the exhibition includes not only
  31. interpretation of the scrolls, their meaning and significance, it
  32. also deals, to the extent it has been explored by scholars, with
  33. the history and social realities of the people and the times that
  34. produced the scrolls.  Recent publications on the exhibited scrolls
  35. are included throughout the exhibition.  Finally, the exhibition
  36. presents differing views where they occur.  For example, the Qumran
  37. excavation is viewed by many as the site of a communal religious
  38. sect, probably the Essenes.  The exhibition explores this
  39. interpretation but also presents entirely different points of view.

  41.      In the exhibition, B.C.E. (Before the Common Era) and C.E.
  42. (Common Era) are alternate designations for B.C. and A.D.  The
  43. exhibition contains other words, terms, and references that may
  44. need definition or explanation.  Such terms are explained the first
  45. time they occur in the exhibition.  The gallery guide for the
  46. exhibit also includes a full glossary of such terms.  Visitors are
  47. encouraged to use the gallery guide both while they are viewing the
  48. exhibit as well as for further reading.
