  4.      The Dead Sea Scrolls have been the subject of avid interest
  5. and curiosity for nearly fifty years.  Today, scholars agree on
  6. their significance but disagree on who produced them.  They debate
  7. specific passages of individual scrolls and are still assessing
  8. their impact on the foundations of Judaism and Christianity.  For
  9. the public in this country and throughout the world, the scrolls
  10. have an aura of reverence and intrigue which is reinvigorated
  11. periodically by the media--journalists who report serious
  12. disagreements among well-known scholars, as well as tabloids which
  13. claim that the scrolls can predict the future or answer life's
  14. mysteries.

  16.      This Library of Congress exhibition presents a significant
  17. sampling of scrolls and explores both their history and their
  18. meaning.  It is the Library's hope that visitors will leave both
  19. satisfied in having seen these remarkable survivors of a far-off
  20. past and in having learned something of the challenges facing
  21. scroll scholars and intrigued by questions that surround the
  22. scrolls and the community that may have produced them.

  24.      Who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls?  How did the Qumran library
  25. come to be?  Whose scrolls were they?  Why were they hidden in the
  26. caves?  Today, with specialists and scholars throughout the world
  27. poring over the newly released scroll texts, solutions to these
  28. mysteries undoubtedly will be proposed.  But these solutions will
  29. themselves raise questions--fueling continuing public interest and
  30. scholarly debate.
