The story of the fabulously wealthy Gatsby and his love for
the beautiful Daisy Buchanan is full of parties with people who are
careless in their real life. If we analyses various characters and
incidents the above element is well established.
The first event which leads to carelessness is, when Nick
Carraway visits to the Buchanans' house and they are taking their
dinner, when all of sudden the butler enters the room and murmurs
in Tom's ear and he frowns in the presence of a guest who is
visiting them first time. Then he goes to next room followed by
Daisy and their voices are audible to Jordan Baker and Nick both
guests, in the sitting room, Thus they are exposing their family
problems to others.
Tom Buchanan has an affair with another woman, Myrtle Wilson and
he does not care that his wife is aware of it. One day he takes
Nick to call her, which is not fair, as he is goes with his wife's
cousin irrespective of his feelings. In the end he gives wrong
information to George Wilson about the murder of his wife.
Daisy Buchanan is also a careless person. She takes Jay
Gatsby's van and kills Mrytle Wilson in a hit-and-run accident.
She does not inform anybody, thus puts Gatsby in trouble for
nothing.
George Wilson is a careless husband, who despite the fact knows
that his wife has a boy friend never bothers to find the truth. He
always believes in Tom and never suspects who he really is. His
faith in Tom makes believe what Buchanan says, which, in turn,
causes him to murder Gatsby and then commit suicide. Hence he acts
carelessly.
Jordan Baker, a friend of the Buchanans, a golfer but careless
figure. She drives recklessly and Nick remarks, " You're a rotten
drivers, either you ought to be more careful or you oughtn't to
drive at all". It is also discovered in the later part of the
story that has cheated in an amateur gold match, thus confirming
her loose attitude to wards others.
Jay Gatsby, a main character is a dubious character who
changes his name and accumulates a lot of money by unfair means.
He is also a careless fellow in his dealing with others
particularly to Daisy, his ex lover. He normally throws parties to
people whom he does not know and much of his time is spent to
impress his guests, thus not caring their feelings. He is still in
love with Daisy and wants to win her back despite the fact that she
is married woman, thus ignoring the feelings of his husband who
accuses him of trying to steal his wife and thus being dishonest.
Gatsby is stopped by for speeding but is able to fix the ticket by
showing the cop a card from the mayor of New York. He allows Daisy
to use his van and when she is involved in hit-and-run accident, he
assumes the blame for the crime which he never did. But he is
killed by an other careless fellow, George Wilson, the deceased
woman's husband.
Fitzgerald's characters all are finally careless expect Nick
Carraway, the narrator. The other characters show their weaknesses
at various occasions.
