Seems as if the Sony AM Stereo/FM Stereo Walkman we've been waiting for
is the "SRF-42". Described in Sony's latest "Style" Catalog as "New
AM Stereo/FM Stereo, receives Motorola C-Quam transmissions, operates
on two AA batteries". The unit is pictured with the AMAX stereo logo
on the black body, with an analog tuning scale on top. Suggested list
price $34.95. Sony at (800) 342-5721 describes the units as currently
shipping, although it wasn't listed in the computer at Sony Plaza, NYC.

PRESS RELEASE
** FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION **
ALBANY HILL, CALIFORNIA -- Stephen Dunifer had to cut short his usual
Sunday evening Free Radio Berkeley (FRB) broadcast due to "technical
difficulties." Shortly before being knocked off the air, three
marked Albany police cars ascended the eucalyptus lined lane to
the summit of Albany Hill as several unmarked low profile vehicles
circled the area. Apparently, not wanting to be apprehended on a
night with an eclipsing full moon, Stephen was seen crouched
down in the back seat of his common blue foreign sedan doubling
as his mobile station, with his driver briskly moving the studio
down the hill.
The Albany officers were responding to a El Ceritto High School gathering
at the top of the hill. Apparently, they were protesting RFB's use of 88.1
MHz as a transmitting frequency, as it interferes with KECH, the
student operated station at El Ceritto High. Too much beer and Steven's
choice of music led to their eventual downfall. This reporting crew
was compelled to maintain a very low profile as it was not certain if
there would be a mini-riot of police and high school students versus
Free Radio Berkeley. However, a participant, who wished to remain anonymous
stated, "Hey man, it's cool to broadcast what you want, but you gotta
do it on your own turf, you get it? I mean I thought the B in FRB stands
for Berkeley -- he should stay on his own ground -- this hill, it's ours."
He then was heard mumbling something about "wideband FM capture effect."
Another person, also wishing to remain anonymous had only one question,
"Stephen, why were you outside the Republic of Berkeley?"
It appears from this latest incident that neither side is willing to back
down. Of course, with our sophisticated techniques, we will be able to
bring you further updates on the trials and tribulations of FRB. One
potential hint of further activity was garnered by a scrap of paper found
near the scene of the incident. Written on the paper was the following:
listen for us on Christmas 88 - 108
a thousand transmitters ....(: KAOS ;)....
We anxiously await the events of Christmas
[Moderator's Note: Most of you know that I basically support
micro-radio, as a concept. But one has to wonder why Stephen would
choose to broadcast in a town that already has a licensed station on
the same frequency. It is behaviour like this which Micro apponants
point to when micro-radio people seek support. Bad move, Stephen. Bill]------------------------------

DIY broadcasting, the current issue of MONDO 2000 covers it fairly well.
MONDO 2000 is a publication from Berkeley (not U. of
Berkeley) which is centered around technology. However, it covers a larger
range of subjects, but basically anything to do with tech. However, it's
not as, well, "refined" as many of other, more well-known magazines are.
The magazine is not widely distributed, but is available in many bookstores
in the Bay Area and larger bookstores outside of Ca. The address is as
follows:
MONDO 2000
P.O. Box 10171
Berkeley, CA 94079
It's $24 for a U.S. subscription, $27 US funds for Canada, and $50 US funds
for international for 5 issues a year.
This IS NOT intended as an advertisement, but just to provide info for those
who might be interested in it.

Just what great radio shows did he miss?
I'm curious.

Try WLRN Miami 91.3 FM, or WXEL 90.7 West Palm Beach.

A good method for long recordings is to get a Beta (yes, Beta) Hi-Fi VCR.
The stereo recordings made this way are very high-quality (I was part of a
remote recording service and we did a lot of collegiate concerts and
speakers) Don't know about VHS hi-fi yet, as the person who owned the
service swore by Beta, so that's what we used. Just take your amp outs to
the audio in's of the VCR, set input for "line" (if I remember correctly)
and go. Use L-750's for the most time but don't record on the slow speed,
try middle or high for quality (or low if you don't need that much clarity,
either way it's pretty good)
Good luck.

Look for autoreverse decks by Sony and Pioneer that take two to six cassettes.

I've connected the audio input of my VCR to the output of my tuner and used
it to record single programs over an hour in length. Unfortunately there's
no way to adjust the tuner. I'm looking into whether I can program the
tuner on a video overlay board I have (Hauppauge WinTV) to receive FM
frequencies, but if I didn't already have the board it would be an awfully
complex and expensive way to solve this problem.

Recording shows on equipment capable of long playing.
Check with AMC Sales 1-800-926-2488. They have a resonable
model at $119 using 120 cassettes. It can record 6 hours on
each side. 12 hour model 2712.

[Moderator's Caveat: This is not really broadcast related, but I felt
broadcasters might have some use for the info too, so if you answer
this person, please post it to rrb. Bill]
Does anyone know the 2 meter frequency where the shuttle's
communication is retransmitted?
