Earlier this fall there was talk that, by Christmas, SONY would be
shipping an AMAX-compliant personal portable which receives AM stereo
(their first in 10 years). Was this just rumor, or is there really such
a radio in the wings? Model number?

Following KCBS-FM Los Angeles, KLRX Dallas, and WLTT Washington DC (now
WARW), CBS flips AC KLTR-93.7 Houston to "all rock and roll oldies" KKRW.
KLRX, by the way, finally flips to more meaningful calls: KRRW.
Spanish KESS-1270/contemporary christian KLTY-94.1 take over country
KAND-FM-107.9 Corsicana, south of Dallas, and took it to Spanish Tejano
"Kick" Sunday. Requested calls for the new Kick are KICI. KESS/KLTY
are also buying news/talk KDNT-1440 Denton. KESS/KLTY also lease
Spanish KMRT-1480 from KOAI-107.5. I assume that when they take over
KDNT, they will have to stop leasing KMRT since that would violate the
2-per-market rule. Maybe KMRT will go back to big band/nostalgia,
especially when KAAM-1310 Dallas gives it up in a few weeks to become
sports KTCK "the Ticket."

Subject: Cleveland airchecker wanted
From: fybush@world.std.com (Scott D Fybush)
Organization: NONE
Hello anyone who lives in or near Cleveland!
I'm looking for anyone who can record WAKC-TV 23 from Akron on
VHS or 8mm. This station has just been sold to ValueVision,
and will shortly switch from ABC network affiliate to home
shopping. I'm looking for someone who can document WAKC
as it is now, and perhaps grab the transition as well.
I'll trade for Boston video/audio airchecks, or I'd
be happy to provide blank tape and postage.
(David Sobol, are you listening? :-)

In a previous article, bernie.wu@cdreams.com (Bernie Wu) says:
>Imus quoted a boston paper saying the ABC station there dropped
>the NYC marathon after the Hoard Stern wannabee Don Imus did commentary. Imus then went on to say "Howard stern what a loser"
I have to jump in here...if the paper called Imus a "Howard Stern
wanna-be", then they are far afield of the facts. Imus has been
broadcasting in his unique style for about 25 years or so, probably about
the time when Stern was just discovering his "private parts"...there's no
way that Imus could be a Stern "wanna-be". As stated previously in the
thread, Imus is one of the architects of modern morning radio. I just
recently acquired a copy of his 1973 RCA LP, "One Sacred Chicken To Go",
which includes bits taken from his classic WNBC (now WFAN, argh) show. No
idea how old Stern is, but do the math...that's at least 20 years, and at a
network flagship station, not some dinky rural starter position! Stern, if
he's anything, is a fad and will be around for a few years and then will
fade away. He's been on in NY for quite a while, yeah, but he's been
dropped already by a few stations if I'm not mistaken...
There are in fact two different audiences between Imus & Stern, but Imus
has the talent, not just the shock value, and is FUNNY> I've listened to
Stern, and he's just not FUNNY.

Hmmm....890AM in Gladstone would be full time at 1.1 kW? Wouldn't that
interfere with 890 WLS-AM from Chicago at night? Usually in the KC area
(I'm a former resident of Lawrence, KS), WLS comes in clearly at night.
Also, how has 1250 WREN Topeka's nighttime directional changed. I remember
several years ago they broadcasted at 5000 watts day and night (I think),
but at night they seemed to beam their power to the west so that it came in
weaker in the Lawrence or KC area, but stronger in central or western
Kansas.

Subject: IRRS-SW maintenance
From: "Alfredo E. Cotroneo" <100020.1013@CompuServe.COM>
Organization: NONE
Due to a series of urgent maintenance interventions to our 7,125 kHz
transmitter, IRRS-Shortwave is ***temporarily*** off the air as of Monday
Nov. 29, 1993. Our engineers are at work in order to resume transmissions as
soon as possible. Our regular broadcasts on 7,125 kHz were discontinued
temporarily for a series of transmitter failures last week, which brought us
off the air during most of the scheduled times. Spare parts are due to
arrive by Friday Dec. 3, and every effort will be made in order to re-start
regular operations as of Sunday Dec. 5, 1993.
Investigations on the cause of the failures to our transmitter, revealed
that surges induced by the local electricity on the 380 Volt power lines
which feeds our station, caused severe damages the transmitter's power
supply modules, to the automatic tuning system, as well as to computer
peripherals used for transmitter monitoring and control. Surge suppressors
installed earlier this summer, were defeated by the spikes on the three
phase AC line, and exploded in flames.
As of Moday Nov. 29, at 22:30 UTC, however, most of such damages have been
successfully repaired, and our transmitter was brought into operation during
a series of short tests. For safety reasons, however, it has been decided to
wait for original manufacturers spare parts and new surge suppressors to
arrive and installed before regular operations are resumed. In the meantime,
we are considering taking legal action vs. the electricity company which
caused these damages, both in order to recover costs, damages, and assure a
more reliable power distribution in the future.
IRRS-Shortwave can be heard (when on air) MON-FRI between 6-9:15 UTC, and
12-21:15 UTC, and SAT-SUN between 06-22:30 UTC (wintertime) on 7,125 kHz.
For more information please contact our office in Milano, or stay tuned to
the next edition of our <Hello There> program.
And wish us good luck!

Well you could probably get a job at Y-107 driving the prize
van looking for people with the bumper sticker on their car,
in the dead of winter
Or maybe you'd like to parlay your 4 months of experience
into a research assistant job. Duties: Answer the request
line and log all requests plus demographics.
(Yes boss I just had 87 calls in a row for either Janet Jackson or
Mariah Carey, all of them were 8-16 years old, but I love my job!)
If you could stand to do this on a fulltime basis you might
make close to $10,000 a year.
This is not a personal attack. It is an indication that starting
salaries in radio are not much to live on.
Printed salary surveys show that experienced fulltime jobs in smaller markets
aren't much better.
Re: WHN in another posting, I"m sorry but they had no 5.0 share when
they switched to WFAN! (unless maybe you're talking 25-54, their 12+
numbers were just not that high. Try 2.0)

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa! :-)
I was not in this market during the Sconnix-WHDH years, and had in
fact forgotten that interlude. And a brief interlude it was...
Sconnix bought WHDH in 1987, just after unloading WBOS-FM to
Ackerley. Blair also sold WZOU 94.5, ex-WCOZ, ex-WHDH-FM at the
same time, to Ardman Broadcasting (that staion is now WJMN).
In all, Sconnix owned WHDH for just two years before
NETC took over. It was not exactly a halcyon era in Boston broadcasting.
Then again, neither was the NETC-WHDH era. Come to think of it, neither
is the ARS-WHDH era... ;-)
A TV note from Boston: Boston University (owner of *90.9 WBUR-FM)
recently bought 68-WQTV (now WABU-TV) Boston, and 58 WCVX Cape Cod.
Today they announced their purchase of 21 WNHT-TV Concord NH. This
will put them on must-carry cable from the Canadian border all
the way out to Nantucket...not half bad!
