>TV, if there are classes in this category) broadcast stations. Or mail

The old definitions:
Class A: no more than 3000 watts at 300 feet AAT
Class B: no more than 50kw at 500 feet AAT
Class C: no more than 100kw at 1000 feet AAT
Class A stations could be assigned anywhere on the country on 92.1, 92.7,
93.5, 94.3, 95.3, 95.9, 96.7, 97.7, 98.3, 99.3, 100.1, 100.9, 101.7,
102.3, 103.1, 103.9, 104.9, 105.5, 106.3, 107.1 MHz. Class B and C stations
were on the other FM channels from 92.3 on up to 107.9. Class B stations
were allotted to Zone I, essentially the Northeast, and to Zone I-A,
essentially California. Class C stations were allotted in Zone II,
the rest of the country. There were a few grandfatered operations with
more power.
The new definitions:
[remembering that any class of station can now be placed on
any frequency between 92.1 and 107.9]...
Class A: 100 to 6000 watts at up to 100 meters (both zones)
ZONE I and IA only:
Class B-1 3100 to 25000 watts at up to 100 meters AAT
Class B 25100 to 50000 watts at up to 150 meters AAT
ZONE II only:
Class C3 6100 to 25000 watts at up to 100 meters AAT
Class C2 25100 to 50000 watts at up to 150 meters AAT
Class C1 51000 to 100000 watts at up to 299 meters
Class C 100000 watts at 300 to 600 meters AAT
Note that stations not meeting the new Class B and C criteria were
downgraded to Class B1, C2, or C1. Note also that both then and now,
a station with tower height higher than given here may adjust
power accordingly to cover the same distance.

[Moderator's Note: Great piece, scott. Adding it to the 'raw' FAQ file! I
have another question. What exactly is a 'drop-in'? I know it is a lower

What power/antenna/directional etc restrictions? They seem to be popping up

Just when we thought it was safe to turn on the radio...
On the heels of the WLLZ-Greater Media buyout of Great American's
WRIF comes the announcement of Detroit Duopoly II.
Broadcast Partners, owners of Adult Top 40 WKQI 95.5 FM
intend to purchase WNIC 100.3 FM, licensed to Dearborn/Detroit.
WNIC, which bills itself as "Detroit's Nicest Rock"
(guess the format), is owned by Fairmont Communications.
Both stations' demographic target is the 25-54 Female market.

I think Boston's WBZ-AM went through that a couple of years ago. I have no
idea what there system is, but there was a teething period for several
months where there'd be screwups and two or three ads, promos, etc. would
play simultaneously, or there'd be nothing when there should be an ad (the
dreaded Dead Air).

My guess is that he uses AOL more often since it has a better
interface more suited to his "big beefy fingers".
Also, according to Jeffery "slum lord" Yorke, that isn't the
exact spelling of his last name but that's certainly how you
say it.

Subject: Radio Action - Haiti
Status: RO
RADIOACTION
RADIO UNDER FIRE IN HAITI
PORT-AU-PRINCE, NOVEMBER 1993 - Broadcast journalists in
Haiti are having to take unprecedented risks in their efforts to
inform the public about what is going on in the country.
Ever since the coup that ousted Haiti's president, Jean-
Bertrand Aristide, more than two years ago, military and para-
military organizations have targeted the media in violent
campaigns. In one case a journalist with Tropic FM, a progressive
radio station in Port-au-Prince, was kidnapped while covering
live the arrival of the UN special envoy to Haiti last February.
Colson Dorme was held in a cell and beaten for seven days before
dumped on a sidewalk without a word of explanation.
Threats and violence directed against the media have
escalated since early October. The following are only a few
examples:
1) On October 12th armed members of the pro-coup Front for
the Advance and Progress of Haiti (FRAPH) took over the national
television and broadcast anti-Aristide programming.
2) On October 25th soldiers closed Radio Provincial and
Radio Celestin International in the city of Gonaive. Studios and
offices of both stations were vandalized in the attack and a
journalist, a technician and an announcer were arrested.
According to the military the stations were closed for music with
"social content".
3) On October 30th armed civilians in Jacmel shot at
journalist Lick Francois.
4) On November 5th Emmanuel Laurent, a journalist with
Tropic FM, was approached by 4 armed men who demanded the address
of the director of the Agence Haitienne de Presse. When Laurent
turned and ran the men shot, hitting him in the hand.
Faced with this escalating repression, many of Haiti's
journalists have been forced underground in order to continue
their work. Radio Soley-Leve, a tiny clandestine station, is one
of the few ways that journalists are able to continue their work
and that people are able to express themselves publicly about
recent events in Haiti. However, Soley-Leve has been targeted by
the pro-coup parliamentarians, by the Raoul Cedras, Commander in
Chief of the Armed Forces and by para-military organizations.
On November 16th, the general coordinator of Haiti's
National Press Union called for an end to the escalation of acts
of intimidation and violence against journalists and demanded
that freedom of the press in Haiti be respected.
The Solidarity Network of the World Association of Community
Radio Broadcasters is requesting that letters or faxes be sent to
Raoul Cedras, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. Your
message may mention the following:
1) That you condemn the ongoing campaign of violence and
intimidation directed against Haiti's journalists.
2) That you demand that freedom of the press be respected in
Haiti.
3) That you support the work of the journalists of Radio
Soley-Leve who have been forced underground by the repression and
that you request that the army and para-military organizations
cease all operations against the station's personnel.

If you're talking about Daniel Schorr, the NPR commentator, then...
he was a longtime CBS correspondent. I think he made Nixon's Enemies List.
In the 50s, if memory serves me correctly, he was CBS' Moscow correspondent
after Cronkite left to go back to the United States.
(If memory of HISTORY serves me correctly, not personal memory; I was born
in 1957. I shouldn't make myself older than I am.)
I've always liked his commentaries. I don't think he ever worked for
the government -- he's too flinty a man. I've always liked his indepedence
and toughness of mind.

By the way, I believe the correct spelling is Daniel SCHORR, not Shore.
Just thought you'd like to know.
I don't know the specifics of Mr. Schorr's career, but I know he's been
around a long time, and as I recall he left CBS under less than ideal
circumstances. Maybe it wasn't CBS, but at some point in his career
back then, he was at the center of some sort of controversy.
He's now one of those "experts" who routinely pops up to analyze
various political events. I heard him most recenly on NPR's coverage
of the Perot-Gore debate.

Daniel Schorr spent most of his long career in broadcasting with CBS
News. He did all kinds of general assignment work with CBS, but in the
70's he was covering Congress at the time of the CIA assassination
hearings and other big stories.
Somehow in the mid-70's he got his hands on a CIA report that CBS
didn't want to run as a story. Schorr sold the report to the Village
Voice, which published it. Schorr donated the money to charity, but even
so, CBS suspended him, and that effectively ended his career there. I
once asked David Brinkley what he thought of the whole Schorr business,
and he sniffed and said Schorr had "behaved like a pig."
Nonetheless, Schorr still has a lot of experience covering all kinds
of news everywhere in the world, and NPR's given him a title something
like "Senior News Analyst." He lives in the Washington DC area, and he's
semi-retired at this point. I think he's in his early to mid-70's.
I enjoy listening to Schorr's on-target analysis, but what some might
mistake for sure-footed handling of tough issues I think is simple
arrogance. I have yet to hear Dan Schorr admit, in any context, that he
might have been wrong.

Mr.Schorr was also at one time the target of former CIA Director
William Colby's wrath. Colby, after an adverse court ruling triggered
by Schorr's work, physically attacked Schorr on the courthouse steps,
shouting "Killer Schorr!" Dan Schorr has also often been on the
"hit "list of the Conservatives, who often have felt Dan dis not
slant things to their liking.

It's Schorr, for one thing, and I heard him speak at Harvard's Kennedy
School of Government just last night.
The program from his speech lists the following professional credentials:
World War II -- Christian Science Monitor, NY Times
1953-1974 -- CBS, including three Emmy Awards for covering Watergate
1974-1979 -- took some time off to write a book and a newspaper
column, and to teach at UC Berkeley
1979-1985 -- Senior correspondent, CNN
1985-date -- Senior news analyst, NPR
Unless you consider NPR "the government," Mr. Schorr has always
worked for private firms.
A fascinating speaker...go see him if he comes to your area!

Subject: Question/comment about WBZ's new IDs
From: @nntpd.lkg.dec.com:francini@munch.dnet.dec.com (John Francini)
Organization: Digital Equipment Corporation, Littleton, MA
I have a question. How frequently, on average, do stations change their
music on their IDs, program intros, etc? Even when the programming is
exactly the same except for the intro music?
I ask because WBZ-AM (mostly all-news) changed their
top/bottom-of-the-hour news intro music. In the past their previous music
was always ear-grabbing and left no doubt that "here was the NEWS!" I'm
not sure I like the new music as much.
I'm also not too sure I like the new IDs either. They've started really
pushing the fact that they are a 50,000-watt clear-channel station -- as if
the listenership cares. [I do, but I suspect I'm in the minority.] Some of
the new IDs make the station sound "full of itself", such as:
"You've made the right choice. Boston's 50,000 watt clear-channel news
station, WBZ AM 1030."
Or, something like: "This is it. Boston's 50,000 watt powerhouse news
station, WBZ AM 1030".
They used to advertise their various personalities and programs in the ID
before -- seemed much less aggressive.
Comments?
