Hello from Los Angeles.
Ratings:
Here are the top 48 overall ratings for Spring and Summer 1993.
I added the basic format of the station to the rightmost column.
Caveats: Since I'm not familiar with all the stations in the
market, I couldn't format all of them. Some of the formats may be
inaccurate if the station has changed since I last listened to it
(which in some cases may have been years ago). Since I don't speak
Spanish (which makes me a minority in this market) I didn't break
the Spanish formats down. All numbers are hand transcribed, so
errors may have occurred.

Newsworthy:
KACE made the news on CNN this weekend for taking a stand against
'bad' urban music. They have modified their format from straight
urban/dance/rap by removing the songs they deem offensive or
irresponsible. This includes songs that call women 'hoes',
promote violence or drug use. Their basic statement was that
playing this type of stuff was implying that it was 'OK' to degrade
women, shoot each other and take drugs. They wanted to set an good
example not promoting this type of activity.
Both the Assistant PD at KPWR, and an urban record company
executive interviewed for the piece stated that they didn't think
this type of music had any influence over how their audience acted.
Personal Opinion: Good for you, KACE! The comments by KPWR and the
record exec typify the irresponsible 'party-line' that seems to be
standard. Do your sales people sell to clients because you CAN'T
influence your audience? I didn't think so.
I could prattle for hours about the fine line between ratings,
responsibility and 'censorship', but I think I'll save the
bandwidth and my blood pressure.
More later from your IRJ LA affiliate, Marty.

From: Robert Carpenter <rc@cmr.ncsl.nist.gov>
Organization: National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
Our esteemed moderator has posted a list of AAHS affiliates (Kids Radio).
Here area few of MY comments for the Washington/Baltimore area:
>CALLS METRO AREA FREQUENCY POWER (watts)
> (DAY/NITE ANTENNA)
>WKDL Washington DC 1050 (1000/44 omni)
I say: Silver Spring, MD. Good daytime coverage.
>WKDV Washington DC 1460 (5000/5000 DA-2)
I say: Manassas, VA. Has a five-tower array pointed AWAY from DC/Balto.
It's needed to protect WOL on 1450 in Washington, and WCEI on
1460 across the Chesapeake Bay in Easton, MD, about 75 miles away.
>Affiliates are currently planned in ...
>Baltimore MD.
I say: Last week's Broadcasting shows Kids Radio buying WFEL, Towson, MD.
This is a northern suburb of Baltimore. WFEL is on 1570 with 5kW
day and 236 W night, and presently has religious programming.
Apparently the sale of WITH (1230 kHz) to Kids Radio fell
through, since WITH is still playing Music of Your Life. Most of
the old WITH personalities moved to 1360 (now WWLG) when the sale
seemed sure, so now Baltimore has two good old-time music stations,
comparable to WQEW to my taste.

Subject: KLZE not really a STL station
From: ucsd!TYRELL.NET!transvox@uunet.UU.NET (Mark Roberts)
Organization: Tyrell Corp.
I had posted this previously, but apparently it did not get through
or was considered too long or whatever.
So I will re-state:
KLZE (95.3, Owensville, MO, my listings show as a class C2 station)
really is _not_ a St. Louis area station. Owensville is about 60
miles as the crow flies from the heart of West St. Louis County,
the intersection of I-270 and Highway 40.
There's no way it's going to penetrate the STL metro area very well.
There will be too much cross-modulation from the stations located
closer in, most of which are on a master antenna site in Shrewsbury, MO.
That's the problem with many of these niche formats. They are tried on
"rimshot" stations, thereby diminishing the chance they will be heard by
those who may otherwise be interested.
The Bethalto, IL kids-oriented station at 95.5 left the air for a while,
but it is back on the air as a listener-supported station.

I wonder why they try to call such a station a DC affiliate? With a
1450 IN DC and a directional antenna pointed AWAY from DC, seems like
a pointless thing. How far is Maassas from DC? Does this signal
cover a suburban area?

That's the one. Wonder how IT covers Baltimore at night.
Sad that so many of these formats are in such lng distance signals.
Seems like a lot of people would listen if the could tune it in
clearly. WWTC is very strong in the metro of the Twin Cities.
I wonder how the L.A affiliates cover? Hey Marty, any reports?

NewCity Communications buys WOMX-AM!
NewCity Communications, owners of Orlando radio stations 580-WDBO, K92-FM
and B94.5 `Young Country' have agreed to purchase 950 AM, WOMX from
Nationwide Communications. WOMX is currently simulcasting Mix 105.1 (FM) but
will join the Radio Aahs `Children's Satellite Network,' based in
Minneapolis. Radio Aahs targets the 2-11 age group with music and
entertainment.
Current plan is to relocate the studio facilities of WOMX-AM to NewCity's
John Young Parkway facility with a separate sales staff based elsewhere in
Orlando.

Subject: Two country stations gone in Sacramento Metropolitan Area.
From: newman@netcom.com (Charles E Newman)
Organization: NETCOM On-line Communication Services (408 241-9760 guest)
WIth too many country stations in the Sacramento Metro Area (including
Yolo, Yuba, Sacramento, Sutter, Placer, and Sacramento counties), some stations
are finally figuring out that the area can not support so many stations
KQBR 104.3 FM is now "The Breeze" a light jazz station similar to the old
KWVF in San Rafael (now KTID adult contemporary) and KLRS (now KSRY, half of
"Star FM") in Santa Cruz. THe will fail just as bad as they did with country,
the "lite jazz" formats on KWVF and KLRS, from what I heard, did not do
"diddly" in the ratings. Foemer regligious station KFIA has switched to
the same format, I do not think either station will do very well. I think
they will blow it here. KKSF in San Francisco, also light jazz, does a lot
better than KWVF or KLRS ever did, but I don't think they too high in the
ratings. KKSF could make a KILLING if they switched to CHR.
KTRB 860 AM is now "Radio Labio", a spanish talk-radio station. THe folks at
KTRB will have a winner here with the increasing spanish population in
the area.
Any other country station considering switching formats could make a KILLING
if they switched to CHR with no CHR stations at present in the San Francisco
or Sacramento Areas.

Really cool!
That show was rebroadcast on a `Best Of' series the first
week that I had the show on the air. It was fortunate for me
to have a set of repeats running as Diana ran some of their
best stuff that week and it proved to be a good break-in for
my market.
Something very interesting I remember about that game was
the interview they did with the `Head Dude` fron the
hospital or childrens home the game proceeds were going to
support. These guys can be rude and are not really the thing
you would want your 10 year old listening to all the time.
They have garnered a reputation for making fun of people and
being quite CRASS. The dude in the interview talked with
them about that reputation and said he didn't give a damn
about it. He knew them...what they really stood for and
REALLY appreciated the fact that they had put this game
together for the sake of his charity. It was great.
I think that game netted somewhere around $20,000 bucks for
a very worthy cause. Anybody who hasn't heard the show...or
is considering something talkwise to run on their station
should give these guys a close look. It upped my billing by
20% so far...
See ya

Also, is it possible to send them messages without a modem (I am on an
Ethernet system at work)?

Arrow 93 is a cross between KLSX and KCBS. All stations nowadays try to
position themselves as unique... gone are the days when radio stations
tried to appeal to everyone (cf. Top 40, "Boss Radio")
Arrow 93 is more hit oriented than KLSX.

here, KLOS tries to label its competitors as "oldies" stations, i.e. stale,
not true rock and roll. (of course, KLOS plays its fair share of classic
rock, a la KLSX...)

KLSX is trying to position itself as the rock station with the most music.
Bad choice of song if the song that 'represents' KLSX is also heard on the others... but perceptions, not reality, count...

Welcome to radio competition.
