This AAA format is the most recent addition to the Gavin listings. It
combines the alternative and progressive sounds with many mainstream
artists trying things a little less mainstream. If you watch cable programs
like MTV Unplugged, you'll find some artists doing acoustic versions of
their hit songs. These versions may find their way to the top of the charts
again and seem to be heard first on AAA stations.
BTW... WONB plays AA or Adult Alternative during the day and after 7:00pm,
we go for the younger, progressive audience with AAA.

Howdy World!!
Here's one from the annuals of Boston radio. Who was the first non-
duplicated FM rock station in Boston ? The answer may surprise you.
No, it was NOT WBCN (104.1). It was WRKO-FM, "your automated all music
station in Boston !!!....I'm Arco-matic !!!!". WRKO-FM came to the air
as "Arco, the shy but friendly robot" on October 12, 1966 at midnight.
It was nearly the same format as co-owned WOR-FM (98.7)/New York.
WRKO-FM predates WRKO-AM by 5 months when WNAC (680)/Boston switched
to the homebrew top-40 format that eventually be came the Bill Drake
format complete with Johhny Mann Singers jingles in ultra-ultra quick
succession....in March, 1967.
WRKO-FM was a fun FM station in a time when FM had a "snob" factor
with nothing but the typical simulcast or the typical symphonic stereo
station. Fortunately, I at the age of 6, had my first FM radio and I
loved the clean sound of not over-processed static free music. So, if
somebody says WBCN-FM was the first rock FM station in Boston, tell
them..."think again !!!!"
If anyone out there has any airchecks of the late, great ARCO-FM
please contact me here at my e-mail address of call me at (617)341-6073.
I don't care about the quality of the recording....let's talk.
And remember...."ARCO sounds good....like a radio station should!!!!!".

It was once produced by CBS Radio, from about 1973 or 74 until maybe
1980. When it first began it was sold out -- and big sponsors, too.
Gradually it waned and finally went off, especially when they had a hard
time clearing time on affiliates. I'm told it is unlikely to air again
because of lack of rerun rights. If true, this is the same thing that
did in ABC Radio's "Theatre Five" in the 1960s. I have never seen any
tapes of it anywhere, but I'm sure a call to WCBS in NY or KNX in Los
Angeles might get you an answer.

YES! CBS R.M.T. was one the best shows. It scared the hell out of me as a
kid, and I loved it. Used to fall asleep to those stories. Was it EG
Marshall who did the narrator voice?

Sacramento needs a local CHR badly. The closest CHR station you get
in the arden area, but can get in the south area is KWIN in Lodi, 97.7 FM,
or KHTN 104.7 in Merced. Northern California is an oddball radio market.
CHR does well in other areas of the country, but not in Sacramento or
San Francisco for some strange reason. KHOP in Modesto was a CHR station
until last november when new owners turned it into an AOR station. The only
other station you can get in Sacramento at times that does play Top 40 is
KEWB in Chico at 94.7 FM

Read in M Street Journal that WFMU-91.1 East Orange NJ is granted
a change in tower height and changing transmitter location.
I believe I saw postings from a WFMU person (as well as an
anti-WFMU person) but will ask in general:
Where is the antenna tower now? Where is it moving to?
Interestingly, for all the hoopla over the current allocation,
and WFMU's trying to maintain its current power, the grant
is for an INCREASE in tower height.
please follow up to this newsgroup.
I guess I'm the FMU person you're referring to.
The antenna is now located on "First Mountain" in West Orange, NJ.
It's moving one mile south (on the same ridge it's on now). This
is mainly to get away from a huge water tower nearby. As far as
I know there is no increase whatsoever on paper, and the new location
may not be any higher at all, though I don't know for sure. If you
call the station (201-678-8264), I'm sure Ken Freedman (station manager)
or Bill Suggs (general manager) will be happy to give you all the
information you want about the move.
BTW, we're not at all certain what the effects of the move will be.
It could easily result in *worse* coverage of NYC than we have
currently. We're taking a chance.
I could be wrong on some of the minor details above. For the official,
authoritative word, call the station.
I hope you're not comparing this antenna move to the massive programs
of expansion that the stations attacking us have embarked on.

Classic Rock is the most boring, most unimaginative of all formats in
radio today. WZLX-100.7FM in Boston,Mass claimed to be the first
'Classic Rock' station in America when it started out about 8-9 years
ago. For a while, they were getting good numbers with 25-54 listeners
but let's face it : listening to the same 'hits' from '60s,'70s, and '80s
on continious basis could be down right torturous for any rock'n'roll
fan. 'ZLX never was and never will be a major player in the #9 market in
America...It does, however, make a nice combo with Infinity's other property
in Boston - 25-year AOR powerhouse WBCN-104.1FM. Both station often play the
same boring classic 'hits'...There's only so much classic rock'n'roll to
go around:-) and so many 'original' gimmicks that you can use with
a classic rocker( "'60s at 6, '70 at 7 and '80s at 8"; "Three for Thursday";
"No Repeat Tuesday"; "Select-A-Set"; "A Deep Cut",etc) ....
