I'm sure that a lot of you out there just can't wait to get out
and there and rip off Ma Bell. Well that's not what true phreaking
is all about but some of you still want to do it so I will tell you
how. See the way that I look at it you go out and get caught and
take the wrap for it and it takes heat off the real phreaks who
just want to learn about the system. Okay so go have fun but I
didn't tell you to do it so if you get caught it's not my fault.
I will discuss four ways to commit telephone fraud in this
article. They are 950 extenders, PBX's, Calling Cards, and red
boxes. First to the 950's.
A 950 extender is a long distance carrier that starts with the
first three digit's being 950. After dialing 950 you dial four
other digit's just like a normal phone number. For example Thrifty
Telco is 950-1493. After dialing the number you will get a low
humming and then you enter a code. Thrifty Telco is still using 5
digit codes but most other Long Distance carriers have switched to
10 digit codes. After entering the code then you dial your
number and the call goes to which ever Long Distance company you
happen to be using. Just remember that 950's have ANI and are very
dangerous to use.
PBX stands for Private Branch eXchange. What it basically is,
is a computer that controls all the phone lines in an office
building or whatever. Most large businesses' telephones are
operated by a PBX. To find a PBX what I just did is looked through
my phone book and looked for the phone number's with many sub
directories such as <accounting, administration, employment office,
etc., etc.>. Then I just dialed number's around those numbers and
finally found the PBX. Once you find the PBX you have to get the
codes for them. That is tricky but just takes time to do. Once
you find the codes you have almost unlimited possibilities.
1. High quality data lines for transmition of data.
Especially if you are calling Long Distance
2. Dialing out Long Distance to friends or who/what ever you
have to call Long Distance
3. Setting up of an Alliance Teleconference<to be included in
a later file>.
4. Hacking computers and not having to worry as much about
ANI because the call will be traced to the PBX.
5. Hacking 950's and the like.
I'm sure that you can come up with some other uses for a PBX
but that was just to give you some idea's.
Calling Cards are getting more and more dangerous to use and I
probably wouldn't even use them even as a last resort. Basically
a calling card has a 9 digit number<the person's phone number>
followed by a 4 digit number<the PIN number>. The two most common
ways to get calling cards are to go to a place where they are used
often<airport, hotel, etc> and look over a person's shoulder and
write down their number. Secondly you can go look through people's
mailboxes and hope to get lucky. Use of calling cards isn't even
really phreaking and is just a cheap excuse to get free calls.
After you have the card you just enter the calling card number
<including PIN number> and the number you want to dial and the
charge goes to the person who's card you are using. There's not
much more to say about that.
Lastly the red box. A red box is just basically a device that
sends out tones that are intended to fool the fortress phone into
thinking that you are putting in quarters. Red boxing is getting
harder and harder because The Gestapo has started to catch onto it.
To make a red box you can go to Radio Shack and buy a tone
dialer and a 6.5/6.5536 MHz crystal and replace the crystal already
in the dialer with it. Of course Radio Shack know's what you are
doing so odds are that you will have to go to more than one Radio
Shack for your materials. If you have any electrical skill what so
ever you and try to follow the diagram that I will try to draw.

PARTS LIST:
RESISTORS VALUES NOTES
R1 220kOhm The exact values of R1 and R2 are not
R2 220kOhm important so long as their sum is 440
R3 1kOhm
CAPACITOR VALUE
C1 0.1 uF.
CRYSTAL VALUE NOTES
X1 6.5 MHz 6.5536 MHz is also within tolerance.
CHIPS NAME NOTES
U1 TCM5089 DTMF encoder.
U2 74HC4017 Decade counter. Regular 4017 is okay.
U3 CMOS 555 Timer IC. Regular 555 is okay if a 1
kOhm resistor is inserted between
pins 3 and 8
SPEAKER IMPEDANCE NOTES
SPKR 600 ohm U1 expects an equivalent load.
SWITCH TYPE NOTES
S1 Momentary You may also want to add a power
switch.
As printed, the circuit expects three triple `A' batteries for a
total of 4.5 volts. A 9 volt battery may also be used but R1 and
R2 should then total 470 kOhms instead of 440. Obviously, you will
need a perfboard and chassis if you expect to build the circuit.
Parts may be ordered from electronic firms. Remember to order at
least two of everything so that you will have spares in case you
mess up.
AUTHOR'S NOTE:The Red box diagram "Toll Fraud Device" was taken
from 2600 magazine Volume 10 number 2 Summer 1993. You can get
2600 by sending a letter to:
2600, PO Box 752,
Middle Island, NY 11953
Now that you have a red box you may be asking what to do with
it. Well basically you just go out to a fortress phone and pick up
the handset and send your tones into it. You will probably want to
muffle it some how and send them in at irregular intervals so that
the operator probably won't get suspicious. Red boxing is good for
making free calls from fortress phones but not any good for data
transmittion. Also I would recommend keeping the calls in the
country so that you only have to deal with the "robot operator" and
not a live one.
I hope that this text file helps all you beginning phreaks out
there. If you are really serious about phreaking then all of the
luck to you. If you just want to go out and rip off Ma Bell then
fuck you and I hope that you get caught. Now for all the author
bullshit.
Anarchist's in Action <AiA> started out as a joke between my
friend Vipurr and I. I wrote an article for Death 'n Anarchy <DnA>
magazine and then decided that I liked the concept of DnA but
didn't like some of the people involved in it. So I broke off from
them and wrote this text file and put it under the group name AiA
for lack of a better name. I have only been phreaking for a little
more than a month and hope that some more people will start to get
into it. As of today I only have a red box and a beige box.
AiA is dedicated to helping people learn about phreaking <and
maybe hacking as soon as I learn>. I want to share what little
knowledge I have so that other people can benefit from it. If you
would like to write for AiA then you can contact me on the boards
that I will be listing latter on. Our next publication will
probably be on Alliance Teleconferencing. For now I just plan on
releasing single text files because I don't have enough to put all
together into one big <or even little> magazine.
Greets going out to:
SiliconSyPHiliS: for teaching me all that I know about the
underground.
Everyone at 2600:for publishing the article by Exterminator and The
Terminal Man on how to build a beige box which got me started
phreaking.
Bruce Sterling:for writing The Hacker Crackdown and getting me
interested in the underground and setting me on my "quest" for
Phrack Magazine that led me to better things<not ragging on the
Phrack people because that is a GREAT magazine>.
Wind Chill Factor<WcF>:for helping me get started in phreaking.
LoD/h:even though you guys aren't around anymore reading about you
in The Hacker Crackdown got me interested in not ripping off the
phone company but wanting to actually learn about it.
Vipurr:for always supporting me in all the stupid idea's that I
have come up with in the past.
A big fuck you going out to:
A 714 lamer by the name of Terminator<how original>:for getting me
kicked off of some boards and being an all around asshole.
