BELL ATLANTIC MOBILE LAUNCHES INDOOR CELLULAR LOGO
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a move which represents the evolution of
cellular communications into true "anytime, anyplace" communications, Bell
Atlantic Mobile unveiled today a symbol which alerts customers to new
indoor locations where they can use their cellular phones.
During a news conference announcing cellular service availability in
Washington's Metrorails system, Bell Atlantic Mobile President and Chief
Executive Officer Denbus F. Strigl introduced the new logo of a hand
holding a portable cellular phone [see back page]. It will be used in
advertising and promotional materials and on signs.
"When we first designed our cellular networks one decade ago, our
objectives was to provide mobile phone services to people driving around
town and across the country," said Strigl. "But customers quickly told us
that their need to communicate doesn't end when they park their cars.
They want to be in touch regardless of their location."
Today, Bell Atlantic Mobile customers can use their cellular phones
indoors at facilities such as conference centers, malls, office buildings,
and transportation centers.
To provide this new in-building service, Bell Atlantic Mobile is
deploying microcells, mini-cellular radio equipment, that allow customers
to use cellular phones indoors, in tunnels, and other hard to reach
places.
The company already has more than 50 microcells in place around the
country and expects to have more than 100 in service by the end of the
year. In addition to the Washing- ton subway, microcells are also serving
customers inside locations such as the Washington Convention Center, The
Fort McHenry and Harbour tunnels in Baltimore, and 30th Street Station in
Philadelphia.
This is an extension of our ongoing strategy to provide customers
with Personal Communications Services today," said Strigl. "Though the
term 'PCS' hasn't been around long, Bell Atlantic Mobile's services have
been providing customers with anytime, anywhere communications
capabilities for some time. We were the first cellular carrier to provide
service in a tunnel seven years ago. In 1991 we place the first
commercial microcell in service. And in 1992 we pioneered commercial one
person, one number services with Bell AtlanticR ContactLineSM services and
one person, one number, one phone service with our Bell Atlantic Personal
Line trial in Pittsburgh."
Bell Atlantic's flobal wireless communications businesses in the
United States, Mexico, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia serve
markets with a total popula- tion of 132 million. The company's owned
POPS in those markets total 65 million.
Bell Atlantic Mobile is the largest cellular carrier on the East
Coast and one of the fastest growing cellular carriers in North America,
serving more than one million customers Washington, DC, and 15 states in
New England, the mid-Atlantic, the Carolinas, and the Southwest.
Bell Atlantic Mobile provides complete wireless communications solutions,
including voice, data, and paging services. Headquartered in Bedminster,
NJ, the company is a subsidiary of Philadelphia-based Bell Atlantic
Corporation.
