THE FERRET BOX
Designed and Tested 10/4/96.
Designed by Ferret
*Spread it, don't mess it*
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a box that actually works:
This is called the Ferret box because of sucky boxes that all do
the same thing used up more colors than a box of Crayola crayons. I got
sick of trying to think of a color so I just named it after myself! (WoW,
what a thoought!)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
What it does:
The one thing I have always wanted is a working lunch box.
Unfortunately the "hard core" phreak who designed it was stupid and went
out and spent 12$ for a Radio Shack line recorder. I've been checking out
the gold box plans and kinda implemented the ideas into the Ferret Box.
This box should cost no more than 5$, plus a few more household items.
The final product is able to record phone conversations whenever some-
one picks up a phone. As soon as the phone leaves the hook, the recorder
starts up and tapes the conversation until they hang up, you run out of
tape, or your batteries die.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
WoW! Please o mighty Ferret, spread your wisdom upon me:
Ok, but you gotta promise not to go tell all your friends out
there that YOU designed it.
What you need:
(1) 180 ohm 1/4 watt resister
(1) LED (I used a red one)
(1) Working Photocell
(1) Working tape recorder (any size,
the smaller, the better)
(1) Spool of wire (Only a foot or 2)
(1) Battery Pack (The size and # is
that of the batteries that
go into your tape recorder)
(1) 1 Monotone Mic Plug (Whatever
size will fit into the mic
jack of your recorder)
(4) Alligator clips (mayber you can
find a way to use less)
Optional (Recommended):
(1) Project Box (Whatever size to
fit all your stuff in, if
it exists).
(2) Modular Jacks (For all you neat
freaks who want it to be
just perfect.)
The Schematic:
G(line)-----------------------------*---------G(out) (To phone)
|
*--------------------* |
| | |
(-) A (+)--PC--(+) B (-) |
:: | |
:: *------C
:: |
R(line)-----/\/\/\--(LD)------------*---------R(out) (To phone)
(-)(+)
KEY:
LD = LED
PC = Photocell
R = Red Wire
A = Battery Pack
B = Tape Recorder
C = Jack
| = Wire
* = Junction
:: = The light from LED
/\/\/\ = 180 ohm resistor
(-)/(+) = Current symbols (respectively)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am schematically illiterate, please explain:
Tough, go get a friend to build it for you.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
How it works:
It's pretty simple, instead of buying some expensive recording
device, you've just made one for a fraction of the cost. Whenever someone
picks up the phone, electricity flows through the line causing the LED to
light. The light activates the photocell switch, and connects your power
supply to the recorder. As long as the light is on, the recorder records.
When the person hangs up, the LED goes off and opens the switch, cutting
the power to the recorder.
A few notes though:
* The batteries do not go in the recorder, they go in the battery
pack.
* Make sure you have the recorder on record when you close the
box, if not, then the electricity will go to the recorder,
but nothin's gonna happen.
* For this to work, you may need to have the LED *TOUCHING* the
photocell.
* If you don't use a project box, you must find some way of
isolating the photocell and LED from light.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to connect:
Late one night, sneak over to your victims house. Hook this baby
up to the little grey/tan box where the wires from the phone poles go to.
****If you want this thing to work, you must disconnect the wires going
to the red and green poles and connect them to the output(to phone)
wires of your box. Connect the input wires to the poles from which you
just removed the previous wires from. If your box doesn't work, switch
the input/output wires.**** Make ABSOLUTE CONFIRMATION that your LED is
going in the right direction.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disclaimers:
This stuff is illegal. Don't get caught doing it.
Don't screw with my stuff. I spent my time and effort on this
faq. Leave this file as is.
