  11. Everything can be obtained at your local Radio-Shack.  As much as
  12. i hate that store, they are convenient...

  15. T1  1:1 audio transformer
  16. D1  1N914 or similar diode
  17. D2  large LED
  18. LMP1 neon lamp
  19. R1  10 k

  23. Q1  2N2222, 2N3904, 2N4401, most any other NPN switching
  24. transistor
  25. 1 nine volt battery. The negative terminal goes to ground on the
  26. schematic.  Positive terminal to +9 volts.

  28. Assembly:
  29. The best way to assemble the design is to grab one of those small
  30. copper lined perfboards from Radio-Shack.  They are nice to work
  31. on, and can easily be trimmed down to a minimum size once
  32. everything is soldered in.  The process is the same as any other.
  33. Solder all the parts in per the schematic.  The photocell must be
  34. in a position so that the light from the neon lamp(LMP1) and the
  35. LED(D2) both shine on it.  All the polarity must be observed.
  36. Whichever direction you put the led in, you must remember (color
  37. code your wires, green is positive, red is negative, yellow is
  38. positive, black is negative) the negative side of the line must
  39. go to its negative side.  The same goes for the transformer.  the
  40. positive side of each line has to be connected to the correct
  41. pair on the transformer.  On the Radio-Shack transformers, put
  42. positive of both lines on the Red and Black pairs,  The negative
  43. on Yellow and White.  Our prototypes have reached less that 1" x
  44. 1" in size.

  46. NOTE: The entire thing MUST be wrapped in black tape.  IT must be light tight
  47. or you will have a relay that turns on with the sunrise.

  49. Theory of Operation:
  50.  
  51. The diverter works on some basic electronic principals.  Step by
  52. step.  The phone rings.  The neon lamp is activated by the high
  53. voltage(88 p-p) ac and flashes.  This light shines on the
  54. photocell, decreasing its resistance.  When this happens, the
  55. positive voltage flowing through the photocell and the 10k
  56. resistor exceed the breakdown voltage of the base of the
  57. transistor and switches that transistor on.  Once the transistor
  58. is on, current flows freely from emitter to collector, energizing
  59. the relay.  The relay's two sets of switches connect both lines
  60. to the 1:1 audio transformer, effectively taking both lines off
  61. the hook and coupling any audio signals from either line to the
  62. other one.  Once this happens, current is now flowing through the
  63. transformer,relay,led loop.  This current lights the led and that
  64. light shines on the photocell.  This is what keeps the device
  65. latched.  The light from the led keeps the photocell resistance
  66. low enough to keep the transistor on.  Now, you make you call and
  67. get on with your business.  You hang up.  Now, the local CO keeps
  68. current flowing through the indial line for about 5 seconds, at
  69. which point it drops down for a second or so and then goes back
  70. up.  This is the signal the device uses to determine when you've
  71. hung up.  When the current drops down, there is no light, and the
  72. photocell resistance raises enough to turn the transistor off and
  73. delatch the entire system.
  74. Applications:

  76. The applications are relatively obvious.  Hook it up to two
  77. unused lines and make free calls.  Hook it up to two payphones,
  78. and red box calls.  The only thing to watch out for is ringing.
  79. If you hook it up to a residential line for the indial a small
  80. (maybe 1/8) of a ring occurs when you call, tipping off people
  81. inside the house.
