  3.       PIPE OR "ZIP" GUNS
  4.       ------------------

  6.           Commonly known as "zip" guns, guns made from pipe have
  7.       been used for years by juvenile punks.  Today's Militants
  8.       make them just for the hell of it or to shoot once in an
  9.       assassination or riot and throw away if there is any danger
  10.       of apprehension.
  11.  
  12.           They can be used many times but with some, a length of
  13.       dowel is needed to force out the spent shell.
  14.  
  15.           There are many variations but the illustration shows the
  16.       basic design.
  17.  
  18.           First, a wooden stock is made and a groove is cut for
  19.       the barrel to rest in.  The barrel is then taped securely to
  20.       the stock with a good, strong tape.
  21.  
  22.           The trigger is made from galvanized tin.  A slot is
  23.       punched in the trigger flap to hold a roofing, which is
  24.       wired or soldered onto the flap. The trigger is bent and
  25.       nailed to the stock on both sides.

  27.           The pipe is a short length of one-quarter inch steel gas
  28.       or water pipe with a bore that fits in a cartridge, yet
  29.       keeps the cartridge rim from passing through the pipe.

  31.           The cartridge is put in the pipe and the cap, with a
  32.       hole bored through it, is screwed on.  Then the trigger is
  33.       slowly released to let the nail pass through the hole and
  34.       rest on the primer.

  36.           To fire, the trigger is pulled back with the left hand
  37.       and held back with the thumb of the right hand.  The gun is
  38.       then aimed and the thumb releases the trigger and the thing
  39.       actually fires.

  41.           Pipes of different lengths and diameters are found in
  42.       any hardware store.  All caliber bullets, from the .22 to
  43.       the .45 are used in such guns.

  45.           Some zip guns are made from two or three pipes nested
  46.       within each other.  For instance, a .22 shell will fit
  47.       snugly into a length of a car's copper gas line.
  48.       Unfortunatey, the copper is too weak to withstand the
  49.       pressure of the firing.  So the length of gas line is spread
  50.       with glue and pushed into a wider length of pipe.  This is
  51.       spread with glue and pushed into a length of steel pipe with
  52.       threads and a cap.

  54.           Using this method, you can accomodate any cartridge,
  55.       even a rifle shell.  The first size of pipe for a rifle
  56.       shell accomodates the bullet.  The second accomodates its
  57.       wider powder chamber.
  58.  
  59.           A 12-gauge shotgun can be made from a 3/4 inch steel
  60.       pipe.  If you want to comply with the gun laws, the barrel
  61.       should be at least eighteen inches long.
  62.  
  63.           Its firing mechanism is the same as that for the pistol.
  64.       It naturally has a longer stock and its handle is lengthened
  65.       into a rifle butt.  Also, a small nail is driven half way
  66.       into each side of the stock about four inches in the front of
  67.       the trigger.  The rubber band is put over one nail and
  68.       brought around the trigger and snagged over the other nail.

  70.           In case you actually make a zip gun, you should test it
  71.       before firing it by hand.  This is done by first tying the
  72.       gun to a tree or post, pointed to where it will do no
  73.       damage.  Then a string is tied to the trigger and you go off
  74.       several yards.  The string is then pulled back and let go.
  75.       If the barrel does not blow up, the gun is safe to fire by
  76.       hand.
