  3.                        Improvising Black Powder

  9.      Black powder can be prepared in a simple, safe manner.  It may be  
  10. used as blasting or gun powder.  
  11.   
  12. Material required:  
  13. -----------------  
  14. potassium nitrate, granulated, 3 cups  
  15. wood charcoal, powdered, 2 cups  
  16. sulfur, powdered, 1/2 cup  
  17. alcohol, 5 pints (whiskey, rubbing alcohol, etc.)  
  18. Water, 3 cups  
  19. heat source  
  20. 2 buckets -- each 2 gallon capacity, at least one of which is heat  
  21.              resistant (metal, ceramic, etc.)  
  22. Flat window screening, at least 1 ft. Square  
  23. large wooden stick  
  24. cloth, at least 2 ft. Square  
  25.   
  26. note: the above amounts will yield 2 pounds of black powder.  However,  
  27.       only the ratios of the amounts of the ingredients are important.  
  28.       Thus, for twice as much black powder, double all quantities  
  29.       used.

  31. Procedure:  
  32. ---------  
  33. 1) place alcohol in one of the buckets
  34.   
  35. 2) place potassium nitrate, charcoal, and sulfur in the heat resistant  
  36.    bucket.  Add 1 cup water and mix thoroughly with wooden stick until  
  37.    all ingredients are dissolved.
  38.   
  39. 3) Add remaining water (2 cups) to mixture.  Place bucket on heat  
  40.    source and stir until small bubbles begin to form.  
  41. Caution:  do not boil mixture.  Be sure all mixture stays wet.  If any  
  42.           is dry, as on sides of pan, it may ignite.
  43.   
  44. 4) Remove bucket from heat and pour mixture into alcohol while  
  45.    stirring vigorously  
  46.   
  47. 5) let alcohol stand about 5 minutes. Strain mixture through cloth to  
  48.    obtain black powder.  Discard liquid. Wrap cloth around black  
  49.    powder and squeeze to remove all excess liquid.  
  50.   
  51. 6) Place screening over dry bucket. Place workable amount of damp  
  52.    powder on screen and granulate by rubbing solid through screen  
  53. note: if granulated particles appear to stick together and change  
  54.       shape, recombine entire batch of powder and repeat steps 5 & 6.

  56. 7) Spread granulated powder on flat dry surface so that layer about  
  57.    1/2 inch is formed.  Allow to dry.  Use radiator , or direct  
  58.    sunlight.  This should be dried as soon as possible, preferably in  
  59.    one hour.  The longer the drying period, the less effective the  
  60.    black powder.  
  61. Caution: remove from heat as soon as granules are dry.  Black powder  
  62.          is now ready for use.
