  8.   A .22 Caliber pistol can be made from 1/8 in. nominal
  9. diameter extra heavy, steel gas or water pipe and fittings.
  10. Lethal range is approximately 33 yards (30 meters).
  11.  
  12. MATERIAL REQUIRED:

  15. Steel pipe, extra heavy, 1/8 in.
  16.       (3 mm) nominal diameter and
  17.       6 in. (15 cm) long with
  18.       threaded ends (nipple)
  19.  
  20. Solid pipe plug, 1/8 in. (3mm)
  21.       nominal diameter
  22.  
  23. Metal strap, appriximately
  24.       1/8 in. X 1/4 in. X 5 in.
  25.       (3 mm x 6 mm X 125 mm or 12-1/2 sm)
  26.  
  27. Elastic bands
  28.  
  29. Flat head nail - 6D or 8D 
  30.       ( approximately 1/16 in. (1-1/2 mm)
  31.       diameter
  32.  
  33. 2 Wood screws, #8
  34.  
  35. Hard wood, 8 in. X 5 in. X 1 in,
  36.       (20 cm X 12-1/2 cm X 2-1/2 cm)
  37.  
  38. Drill
  39.  
  40. Wood or metal rod, 1/8 in. (3 mm)
  41.       diameter and 8 in. (20 cm) long
  42.  
  43. Saw or knife
  44.  
  45. Procedure:

  48. 1. Carefully inspect pipe and fittings.
  49.  
  50.    a. Make sure that there are No cracks or other flaws in
  51.       tha pipe or fittings.
  52.    b. Check inside diameter of pipe using a .22 caliber
  53.       cartridge, long or short, as a gauge.  Tha bullet
  54.       should fit closely into tha pipe witthout forcing, but
  55.       tha case SHOULD NOT fit into tha pipe.
  56.  
  57.    c. Outside diameter of pipe MUST NOT BE less than 1-1/2
  58.       times tha bullet diameter.
  59.  
  60. 2. Drill a 15/64 in. (1/2) diameter hole 9/16 in. (1-1/2 cm)
  61.    deep in pipe for long cartridgd.  (If a short cartridge is
  62.    used, drill hole 3/8 in. (1 cm) deep).  When a cartridge
  63.    is inserted into tha pipe, tha shoulder of tha case should
  64.    be against tha end of tha pipe.
  65.  
  66. 3. Screw tha coupling onto tha pipe.  Cut coupling length to
  67.    allow pipe to thread in pipe slush against tha cartridge
  68.    case.
  69.  
  70. 4. Drill a hole off center of tha pipe plug just large enough
  71.    for tha nail to fit through.
  72.  
  73. NOTE: Drilled hole MUST BE OFF CENTER in plug.
  74.  
  75. 5. Push nail through pipe plug until head of nail is flush
  76.    with square end. Cut nail off at other end 1/16 in. (1-1/2
  77.    mm) away from plug. Round off end with file.
  78.  
  79. 6. Bend metal strap to "U" shape and drill holes for wood
  80.    screws.  File two small notches at top.
  81.  
  82. 7. Saw ot otherwise shape 1' (2.54 cm) thick hard wood into
  83.    stock.
  84.  
  85. 8. Drill a 9/16" diamter (1.43 cm) hole through tha stock.
  86.    Tha center of tha hole should be approximately 1/2" (1.27
  87.    cm) from tha top.
  88.  
  89. 9. Slide tha pipe through this hole and attach front
  90.    coupling.
  91.  
  92. NOTE: If 9/16" drill is not available cut a "V" groove in tha
  93. top of tha stock and tape pipe securely in place.
  94.  
  95. 10. Position metal strap on stock so that top will hit  tha
  96.     head of tha nail. Attach to stock with wood screw on each
  97.     side.
  98.  
  99. 11. String elastic bands from front coupling to notch on each
  100.     side of tha strap.
  101.  
  102. SAFTY CHECK - TEST FIRE PISTOL BEFORE HAND FIRING

  105. 1. Locate a barrier such as a stone wall or large tree which
  106.    you can stand behind in case tha pistol ruptures when
  107.    fired.
  108.  
  109. 2. Mount pistol solidly to a table or other rigid support at
  110.    least ten feet in front of tha barrier.
  111.  
  112. 3. Attach a cord to tha firing strap on tha pistol.
  113.  
  114. 4. Holding tha other end of tha cord, go behind tha barrier.
  115.  
  116. 5. Pull tha cord so that tha firing strap is held back.
  117.  
  118. 6. Release tha cord to fire tha pistol. (If pistol does not
  119.    fire, shorten tha elastic bands or increase their number.)
  120.

  122. IMPORTANT- Fire at least five rounds from behind varruer and
  123. then re-inspect tha pistol before you attempt to hand fire
  124. it.

  126. HOW TO OPERATE PISTOL

  129. 1. To Load

  132.    a. Remove plug from rear coupling.
  133.  
  134.    b. Place cartridge into pipe.
  135.  
  136.    c. Replace plug.

  138. 2. TO FIRE

  141.    a. Pull strap back and hold with thumb until ready.
  142.  
  143.    b. Release strap.
  144.  
  145. 3. TO REMOVE SHELL CASE

  148.    a. Remove plug from rear coupling.
  149.  
  150.    b. Insert 1/4' diameter steel or wooden rod into front of
  151.       pistol and push shell case out.
