e spsStarting from now on, weiwill have a BBS of the month.psWeswill choose a
BBS, ragardless of computer type, andslookeat the user participationiinsphreak
related matters, asswell assquality discussions on the various illegal topics.
A BBS can remain the BBS of the month asslong assthey reside above the rest of
the BBS systems. Even though weiwill sometimes bring out more than one issue
in a month, the boardiwill remain BBS of the month until the first issue inthe
next month comes out.
e spsThis month's BBS of the month is FBI PirateNet.psWeschose this board
because of the large numbers of posts in the bases, andsnot only information,
but discussions asswell, with a minimum number of posts from raggers and
braggers. The number for it is 516-661-7360. The SysOp of FBI PirateNet is

e spsNew York --oUS Sprint Communications Corp., the troubledslong distance
carrier, is expected to announce soonithat itswill cut itsswork force by
several hundred people andsreduce itssseven regional divisions to 3 operating
groups, sources familiarswith the company said.
e spsThe company's Pacific division is based in Burlingame, CA. The layoffs
andsreorganizationiare part of a plan byoUS Sprint's new president, Robert H.
Snedaker, to reduce heavy operatingslosses, which analysts expect to reach
more than $800 millionithis year.
e spsSnedaker replaced Charles M. Slibo, who was forced to resigniinsJuly
because losses were runningsmuchshigher than the parent companies had
expected.psProblemsswith the company's computerizedsbilling system also
contributed to Skibo's ouster. US Sprint is owned andsoperatedsbysthe GTE
Corp. andsUnitedsTeleCom.
e spsAccording to sources close tosSnedaker, who was viceschairman andschief
operatingsofficer of UnitedsTeleCom, he is planning to consolidate the
company's 7 divisions, which operate in the same geographical regions assthe
seven regional Bell operatingscompanies, into 3 divisions.
e spsThe rationale for the move, according to idustry analysts, is that the
company will need asmuchssmaller work force once it begins handling all it's
phone traffic oniit's new fiber optic network, which can carry a greater
number of telephone callseat less cost. Company officials have said that
they expect to have most of the traffic onithe networksbysearly next year.
e spsOne source said that there would be more than one roundsof layoffs in the
comingsmonths andsthat the company ultimately plans to reduce itss14,000
member work force by 15 percent.
e spsSeveral top managers are expected to resignias soonias US Sprint
centralizes itssmarketingsandssupport operations assitssheadquarters in Kansas
City, MO., according to a report in the latest issue of Business Week
magazine.
e spsA spokesman for US Sprint said oniFridaysthat the company would not
comment on the rumors.psThe company is the nation's thirdilargest long
distance company, after the American Telephone andsTelegraph Co. (AT&T) and
MCI Communications Co.
e spsLast year, Washington based MCI undertookea similarsreorganizationiin
which it posted as$502.5 millioniloss to write down old inventory and
restructure operations.
e spsAnalysts said that is US Sprint is to turn a profit, the company must
increase itssmarket share.ps"To do this, US Sprint must gain more large
business customers, which account for about 80 percent of industry revenues,"
said Robert B. Morris III, Securities in SaniFrancisco.
e spsMorris said that by usingea slicksmarketingscampaignito differentiate its
all-fiber telephone networksfrom those of competitors, US Sprint more than
doubledsitsscustomer base last year.psBut "most of these customers were
residentialsandssmall business users that added little tosSprint's bottom
line," he added.ps"If the company expects to be profitable, itswill have to
concentrate on providing the best servicesto volume users."

e spsMount Lebanon, PA --oThe US Secret Servicesandslocal policesdepartments
have put a scare into the hacker community with a nationwide crackdown on
computer crime that has resulted in the arrests of teenage hackers in at least
three cities.
e sps"People who monitor the bulletin boards say there are aslot of nervous
hackers out there, wondering who will be arrested next," says Ronald E.
Freedman, vice-president of Advanced Information Management, a Woodbridge, VA
base computer security firm.
e spsNine teenagers from Mount LebanonsJunior-Senior High School near
Pittsburg, PA, were arrested recently andschargedswith computer fraud.psThe
juveniles allegedly usedshome computers to gain illegal access to a credit
card authorizationicenter. They obtained valid credit card numbers andsused
them to purchase thousands of dollars worth of mail order merchandise, the
policessaid.
e spsFreedman says it appears the hackers usedssome relatively sophisticated
techniques in the scheme, including specially written software that enabled
them to bypass security controls andsnavigate through credit records to obtain
key information.
e spsPolicesofficials saysthat the hackers also obtained access codes from
pirate bulletin board systems to make freeslong distance callseandsgain access
to various business andsgovernment computers.
e spsThe arrests were the result of a 6 week investigationibysthe Secret
Servicesandsthe Mount Lebanonspolice.sThe policeswere tippedsoffsbysparents
who were suspicious about how their son managed to obtain a skateboard valued
at $140.
e spsThe Secret Serviceswas also involved in investigations that led to the
arrests of several hackers in SaniFranciscosandsNew York last July.
e spsSecret Servicesspokesman William Corbett says that although some reports
have portrayedsthe hackers as part of a national crime ring, the cases are
unrelated.ps"It's just that a few of these computers hackingscases came to a
head at about the same time," he says.
e spsFederal Legislationienacted in 1984 givessthe Secret Service, part of the
Department of the Treasury, asmajor role in investigatingscomputer crimes.
Under the federal Computer Fraud andsAbusesAct of 1986, computer fraud is a
felonysthat carries asmaximum penalty of 5 years for the first offense, ands10
years for the second. Displaying unauthorized passwords onihackingsbulletin

e spsWashington, D.C. --oA group of West German teenagers from the Chaos
Computer Club penetratedsa NASA networksrecently, saying they were doing it to
"test the security."
e spsWhat they got into was SPANsNet, a computer networkswith about 700 notes,
which is actually based at the Goddard SpacesCenteriinsMaryland. Allsthat's
in there is unclassified data, spacesscience information, andspost-flight data
anaysis.ps"Anyone with NASA related research can apply for access to SPAN"
says asspokesman, who adds that the networksruns on DEC VAXihardware.ps"We
picked up three attempts to gain access andsput in security precautions so it
would't happen." His personal opinion is,s"We're happysthat they couldn't get
back in, andsdecided to go public." He also added that NASA has many other
networks,smany of the classified ands"probably inpenetrable.psBut I do not
want to challengesanybody."
e spsHow'd they get in?psProbably they got a West German NASA licensee, which
gave them a visitor's pass, then they created new passwords with unlimited
security for themselves, after which gettingsaroundsthe networkswas easy.
