Welcome to ESIE!
Maxell Release November 1986
ESIE (pronounced "easy") is the acronym for Expert System
Inference Engine. ESIE is an Expert System Shell; a tool in
the field of Artificial Intelligence.
The ESIE distribution diskette, of which this README is one
file, may be freely copied and distributed. Printed copies
of this manual, or this manual without the rest of the files
on the distribution diskette, may not be copied or reproduced
in any form.
This release of ESIE is a special one created solely for the
Maxell AI Toolbox advertising campaign. The same
restrictions that apply to this release apply to any release
of the ESIE system. Namely, you may copy and distribute this
diskette as long as the copy is an exact duplicate of the
distribution diskette.
Ten files are normally found on the ESIE distribution
diskette. These have been changed somewhat for this release:
** Normal ** ** Maxell **
ESIE.COM ESIE.COM
MANUAL MANUAL.ESI
READ.ME README.ESI
FORM FORM.ESI
ANIMAL ANIMAL.ESI

DOCTOR DOCTOR.ESI
TUTOR *1*
USER *1*
HISTORY *1*
DOS.ESI *2*
*1* - deleted for this release.
*2* - added for this release. Acknowledgement to Anthony J.
Kadysewski; Drums, PA for providing Lightwave with
DOS.ESI. Mr. Kadysewski is an enthusiastic ESIE user.
The files found on this release are identical to their ESIE
distribution diskette counterparts except for their names and
a few minor changes. These changes where instituted due to
space restrictions on the Maxell eleventh diskette and to
make logical room for Logic Line 1 - an AI product from our
friend corporation: Thunderstone.
THIS SYSTEM IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND,
EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO
THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A
PARTICULAR PURPOSE. THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO THE QUALITY AND
PERFORMANCE OF THIS SYSTEM IS WITH YOU. SHOULD THE SYSTEM
PROVE DEFECTIVE, YOU (AND NOT LIGHTWAVE NOR MAXELL) ASSUME
THE ENTIRE COST OF ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR AND
CORRECTION.
With ESIE you can put some "smarts" into your personal
computer. You can build custom "knowledge bases" (KBs) that
can be used to aid people, like you and me, in doing things
that we would not be capable of doing, or doing as well,
without the system. ESIE knowledge bases can be built to
help us make decisions or to make our computers "more human."
May we suggest that you make a copy of the distribution
diskette before you get started? This will make it easier
for you to pass ESIE and Logic Line 1 along to your friends
and associates.
You can use either the DOS COPY *.* command or the DOS
DISKCOPY command to copy the distribution diskette. ESIE is
perfectly at home in hard disk systems.
ESIE comes with its own manual on the distribution diskette.
To print this manual enter the command:
COPY MANUAL.ESI PRN
at the DOS prompt. It is only 25 pages long!
If you want to see ESIE in action before you do anything,
then slide the diskette in a floppy disk drive and type in
the command:
ESIE
The ESIE introductory screen will appear. At the top of this
screen ESIE is asking you to supply the file name where the
knowledge can be found. Type in ANIMAL.ESI.
You will next be brought to the ESIE top level. Think of an
animal that you want ESIE to find. Then type in GO. Answer
the questions ESIE puts to you correctly and it will figure
out what the animal is.
To get a printed copy of this file, README.ESI, enter:
COPY README.ESI PRN
at the DOS prompt.
