Hayes ESP Communications Accelerator Version 2.0
Hayes ESP Communications Accelerator Version 2.0 is a single port,
16-bit enhanced serial board for IBM PCs and compatibles which supports
speeds up to 921.6 kbit/s. This half-card board maximizes data
transmission speeds and prepares the way for high-speed modems or ISDN
applications.
Hayes ESP Communications Accelerator incorporates a dedicated
communications co-processor with built-in automatic flow control. The
board ensures data integrity by eliminating buffer overrun errors
experienced with even the 16550 UART at speeds of 115.2 kbit/s or
higher. To maximize the PC's performance, Hayes ESP Communications
Accelerator provides dual 1024 byte send/receive buffers and a 16-bit PC
Bus interface. The product works with most high-speed modems and ISDN
terminal adapters and is fully compatible with Windows communications
software.
For Version 2.0, Hayes developed the Hayes Communications Bus Interface
Controller (COM-bic) which is a single chip communications co-processor
<S>topsolution that replaces the majority of the circuitry required for the
first generation Hayes ESP Communications Accelerator. This single chip
solution supports serial data rates of up to 921.6 kbit/s with two
internal send/receive buffers of 1024 bytes each. In addition, a
special purpose communications co-processor manages the buffer,
automatic flow control, and system interface to maximize performance and
prevent data loss due to buffer overflow.

Understanding OPTIMA 288 V.FC + FAX 230,400 Capability
<S>top
Hayes Enhanced Implementation of V.42 bis - OPTIMA 288 V.FC + FAX modem
can achieve speeds up to 230,400 bit/s on highly compressible files
using ITU-T V.42 bis. This increase in the expected compression, from 4
times to 8 times, is achieved by optimizing the implementation of V.42
bis and by providing enhanced technology in the product to run at
230,400 bit/s. This enhanced performance is not proprietary and will
operate with any modem implementing V.42 bis. OPTIMA 288 V.FC + FAX
will go as fast as the other modem will go.
Understanding the Modem Numbers
V.32 9600 + data compression = 38,400 bit/s
V.32 bis 14,400 + data compression = 57,600 bit/s
V.FC 28,800 + data compression = 115, 200 bit/s
Hayes OPTIMA 288 + Hayes enhanced implementation of V.42 bis = 230,400 bit/s

calling tone, and if not there, switches to data mode.
Automode - Procedures defined in an appendix to ITU-T Recommendation
V.32 bis that allow modems with V.32 bis, V.32 and V.22 bis modulation
to reliably interwork with other modems which have any or all of these
modulations, at the highest speed in common between the products. Also
in V.FC mode it will work with other modems supporting V.FC modulation
to connect at the highest possible speed.
Automatic Speed Buffering - Enables the product to communicate at
varying speeds with other modems, including non-error-control modems,
while communicating at a fixed interface speed if required by its
attached DTE (mainframe, mini-computer or PC).
<S>top
Flow Control - Supports three types of flow control: RTS/CTS (using
hardware circuits 106/133), XON/XOFF, and Transparent XON/XOFF.
Transparent flow control, when used with compatible software, permits
the transfer of binary files with any protocol while using XON/XOFF flow
control, on systems which do not support RTS/CTS flow control. Includes
the capability for software to test the modem cable to determine whether
or not RTS/CTS flow control can be used.
DATA TRANSMISSION MODES
Asynchronous Hardware Mode - Supports standard asynchronous
communications for dial-up access to value added networks, online
services, personal computers, minicomputers and mainframes.
Synchronous Hardware Mode - Supports SDLC, HDLC and Bisync synchronous
transmission for connections to mainframes and minicomputers. A PC
using a synchronous adapter card is also supported.
Hayes AutoSync - Uses the system's standard asynchronous communications
port for synchronous communications, eliminating the additional expense
of a synchronous adapter card for SDLC, HDLC or Bisync when used with
<S>topAutoSync or application software. This convenient feature brings both
asynchronous and synchronous data transfer capability to your system in
one communications device and provides substantial savings over other
methods.
Hayes AutoSync 2 - Eliminates the requirement of precise control signal
timing required by the original AutoSync. Precise control signal timing
caused the original AutoSync to be much more difficult to implement at
speeds above 57,600. Both allow synchronous-mode operation of a modem
connection to an ordinary asynchronous serial card. AutoSync 2 allows
reliable operation at high communication speeds above 14.4 kbit/s with
multitasking operating systems, with intelligent serial ports and
LAN-connected modems.

About the Hayes Developer Program
To support and encourage the continued involvement of developers in the
creation of new applications we have implemented The Hayes Developer Program.
The program provides an open line for communication between Hayes and
developers to assist you in easily obtaining information that is vital to your
application development. We consider you a valuable partner and feel this
program underscores our commitment to developers.
As part of our commitment to you, we will publish a quarterly newsletter.
This is our first electronic edition and we hope that you will find the
information useful. With this newsletter, we hope to keep you informed of new
Hayes products, current marketing campaigns, and technical information. To
help support your technical staff, the technical tips column will provide
insight to our technology and answer some of the common technical questions.
There is more to Hayes than the Hayes Standard AT Command Set. Our modems
contain advanced features that can only be taken advantage of with specialized
software. Through the developer program, we hope to encourage you to take
<S>topadvantage of our advanced technology and continue to enhance the communications
solutions available today! Please review the Hayes technology application
interfaces we have to offer. Many developers have already profited by
incorporating our technology into their software.
The Hayes Developer Program has many features that developers can benefit
from. Please review the available developer program services. To participate
in the Hayes Developer program you must develop applications for Hayes
products.
Hayes values you as a developer and we look forward to working with you and

Hayes Technology Application Interfaces:
-- Hayes Standard AT Command Set - Interface for control of basic and
advanced modem feature sets. The interface includes a subset of special
commands and result codes for V-series Modems, Smartmodem 9600s, Ultra 96
Modems, V.42, V.42bis, AutoStream, X.25, AutoSync, and Synchronous
Communications. The Hayes Standard AT Command Specification for the
V-series(TM) ULTRA Smartmodem 9600 is free of charge.
-- AutoStream(TM) - Multi-session serial interface protocol for use with our
X.25 Modems. Autostream allows multiple, simultaneous data streams over a
single asychronous DTE physical link, and allows for automatic switching
between DTE channels. Our V-series Modems have triple X pads which software
developers can utilize through asynchronous communication ports. Ultra 96
supports both V.32 and X.25 and will be a important component of the growing
X.32 Market (Dial X.25). The AutoStream Software Programmer's Guide is free of
charge.
-- Hayes Synchronous Interface / Hayes Synchronous Driver (HSI/HSD) -
Software interface for using the AutoSync capability in high-speed Hayes
<S>topmodems. All of our Smartmodem 2400 or higher bps modems contain AutoSync which
allows users to communicate synchronously (SDLC or Bysync) while using an
asynchronous communications port and software incorporating HSI/HSD. The Hayes
Synchronous Interface for Applications Software is free of charge. The Hayes
Synchronous Driver and Technical Reference Guide require a one year, renewable,
license and fee of $250.00.
-- ESI - Enhanced Serial Interface for Hayes ESP(TM). The Enhanced Serial
Interface specification is an extension of the familiar COM port interface used
in personal computers. ESI includes the definition of I/O, control registers,
buffer control, Direct Memory Access (DMA) to the system, and interaction with
attached modem devices. The ESI document describes the hardware level
interface of the Hayes ESP. Hayes ESP will provide users with a dual port
serial card capable of communications speeds of 38400 bps or 57600 bps. The
Hayes ESP, used with ESI software, provides a dedicated communications
coprocessor, data buffers, and flow control to ensure data integrity and
improved system and throughput performance by off loading the CPU in
multi-tasking operating environments. Now that modems like the Ultra 96 are
capable of communicating at 38400 users will need the protection from data loss
that ESI software and Hayes ESP provide. The Enhanced Serial Interface
specification is free of charge.
<S>top-- FAX - Application Programming Interface for JT Fax(TM) 9600B which allows
high speed communications to either a single JT Fax 9600B or multiple JT Fax
9600Bs through a 2K shared memory. This interface can be used with any
operating system for receiving faxes or sending ascii, PCX, and fax-format
data. The Programmer's Reference Guide for JT Fax 9600B is free of charge.
-- Hayes Standard AT Command Set Enhanced for ISDN - Interface for Voice and
multi-channel control for ISDN CPE. The Hayes Standard AT Command Set Enhnaced
for ISDN allows communication software compatible with Hayes V-series Modems to
utilize the basic data functions of ISDN CPE. For full featured ISDN
communication solutions independent of ISDN switch types, the enhancements for
ISDN allow software applicaitions to control voice calls from the PC and
establish multiple data sessions over the 2B or D channels. A one year
renewable subscription to this interface specification is $125.00.
-- Hayes ISDNBIOS Interface - High Speed MS-DOS Application Programming
Interface for ISDN CPE. Based on NetBIOS, the Hayes ISDNBIOS interface has
been designed by Hayes specifically for utilizing advanced features of ISDN,
and is particularly well suited for applications which require high throughput,
multi-tasking, memory residency, or wide area networking. A 1 year renewable
subscription to this interface specification is $125.00. Developer tools for
<S>topthe Hayes ISDNBIOS interface are available and require a license agreement in
addition to the interface subscription.

participation with third-party developers to design networking
applications. For LANstep, Hayes offers a LANstep Developer Kit for
corporate in-house and commercial software developers that includes
technical documentation and a
"C" language program library.
Hayes LANstep Developer Kit enables developers to design customized
applications that take advantage of LANstep's native communications
features as well as multitasking, file system and file security
capabilities over the network. Client/server applications and
<S>topapplications that integrate enhanced functionality in LANstep can be
developed. Applications can be written for use in LANstep operating
system, DOS, and Windows 3.0 environments.
Hayes LANstep Developer Kit is sold through Hayes Customer Service to
qualified developers for US$595 and CN$695 each. Interested developers
should contact Hayes Customer Service in the U.S. at 404/441-1617 and in
Canada at 519/746-5000 to order the kit or receive more information.
