Exchange v1.2
Phone Exchange Database
(c) 1994 Scott MacLean
Exchange 1.2 (c) 1994 Scott MacLean Page 1
Introduction
Exchange is a small utility which holds every area code and
telephone exchange in the western hemisphere, along with the city and
state/province/area which applies to each exchange. Only those
countries which conform to the standard 3 digit area code/3 digit ex-
change are included.
Installation
Exchange consists of five files:
EXC.EXE Program file
EXC.DOC This documentation file
EXCHANGE.DAT Main data file
EXCHANGE.IDX State/City index file
EXCHANGE.IDY City/State index file
Out of these five files, all except the DOC file must be kept on
disk. The DOC file may be deleted, but it is recommended that you keep
it around for reference. The simplest way to install Exchange is to
put all the files in one of the directories in your DOS Path. When
EXC.EXE is first run, it will look for it's data files; first in the
current directory, then in all the directories specified in the DOS
Path. If it can't find them in any of those directories, it will ter-
minate with an error message. Copying all the files to one of the
directories in your DOS Path will allow Exchange to be run from the
DOS command line, regardless of what directory you are in.
Instructions for Use
Exchange is very easy to use. Simply type EXC and the information
which you know, and Exchange will reply with the information you want
to know. For instance, let's say you know the phone number is
(912) 746-1234. Our area code is 912 and our exchange is 746. We would
type:
C:\>EXC 912 746
Exchange would reply with:
EXC - Exchange Finder v1.2 18-Apr-94 (c) 1994 Scott MacLean
A/C EXC St City
--- --- -- ----------
912 746 GA MACON
This tells us that the phone number belongs to someone who lives
in Macon Georgia. If we so desired, we could specify an area code
only, with no exchange. In that case, we would be shown the exchange,
name and state of every city in that area code.
We can also do it the opposite way, specifying the state and
city. For instance, let's say we want to find out what exchanges apply
to Gaithersburg Maryland. The city field is a maximum of ten charac-

ters however, and Gaithersburg is twelve characters long. Therefore,
it will be abbreviated or truncated. We must take this into account
when specifying a city. The following:
C:\>EXC MD GAITHERSBURG
Will result in the following response:
EXC - Exchange Finder v1.2 18-Apr-94 (c) 1994 Scott MacLean
A/C EXC St City
--- --- -- ----------
As you can see, there is no result. Instead, we should specify
only the first three or four letters of the city's name:
C:\>EXC MD GAI
EXC - Exchange Finder v1.2 18-Apr-94 (c) 1994 Scott MacLean
A/C EXC St City
--- --- -- ----------
301 330 MD GAITHERSBG
301 540 MD GAITHERSBG
301 869 MD GAITHERSBG
301 916 MD GAITHERSBG
301 926 MD GAITHERSBG
301 963 MD GAITHERSBG
301 972 MD GAITHERSBG
301 977 MD GAITHERSBG
301 990 MD GAITHERSBG
As you can see, we are given a list of area codes and exchanges
which are found conforming to a state of "MD" and a city beginning
with "GAI". Lastly, we can specify just the name of a city. This will
show every city in every state which conforms to the given parameter.
For instance, let's look for every city named ACTON:
C:\>EXC ACTON

--- --- -- ----------
317 862 IN ACTON
508 263 MA ACTON
508 635 MA ACTON
207 477 ME ACTON
519 853 ON ACTON
817 326 TX ACTON
514 546 PQ ACTON VALE

Paging
Exchange can be caused to stop every 24 lines and wait for a
keypress. This is useful for viewing long lists, like when asking for
all exchanges in a large city. When waiting for a keypress (or when
scrolling a list by, for that matter) Exchange can be aborted by
pressing ESC, CTRL-C or CTRL Break. To cause Exchange to stop every 24
lines, append "/P" to the end of the command:
C:\>EXC ATLANTA /P

Registration
This program is fully functional, and the data in it is current
as of the date of release. If you find this program useful, it is re-
quested that you send $10 US Funds to the author at the following ad-
dress. You support will ensure the production of similar software
packages at similar prices. I have written well over a hundred
programs for the IBM PC, all released in a similar fashion. If you are
interested in a list of these programs, please send $15 US instead of
$10 US.
