  13. We have all heard the commercials on TV talking about '1-800-OPERATOR' and
  14. '1-800-COLLECT'. These are a new type of service being provided by ATT
  15. (800-OPERATOR), and MCI (800-COLLECT). What these are, are 800 numbers ran by
  16. long distance phone companys, that by calling a 800 no. allow you to place
  17. a collect call for cheaper than just dialing '0' (up to 44% cheaper according
  18. to the commericals).

  20.    Now your probly saying, 'why should I care', or 'let the fool who accepts
  21. pay as much as possible'. Well, what these services are useful for, doen't
  22. require anyone to accept. They are all run by computer, and not a live
  23. operator! What happens when you call 1-800-OPERATOR (the best of the two,
  24. because you can hear the responses of the person you have called), is that
  25. A recording askes you to enter the area code, and number you are calling.
  26. After entering this, a computer checks to see if that number can accept collect
  27. calls. (Payfones, and celluar phones in most cases don't pass this test)
  28. If the number can accept collect, it then asks you to say your name, and
  29. gives you 3-5 seconds to do so. It records whatever you say here... so
  30. you could put ANYTHING here... like the payfone that your ats number
  31. (useful for calling collect, saying the phone no. of the payfone your
  32.  at, and after they hear that, you hang up. The person you called can then call
  33.  the payphone back, and you can pick up, and no charge! (only works for local))
  34. Also usefull for obsine phone calls, and anything else you could say to
  35. someone. It's pretty impossible for them to trace you back, so you can
  36. do this from your house, and it's pretty safe.

  38. Now for the second part.... after they record you name, they call the number
  39. you entered. When the person picks up, and says 'Hello' they hear:

  41. 'You have an ATT collect call from 'Whatever you said'. Will you accept charges?
  42.  Please say 'YES' 'NO' or 'OPERATOR'.'

  44. It then repeats the message, and instructions for the stupid.

  46. It uses voice reconition to see if they accepted. But if the person doen't
  47. say anything when they answer, it just waits a few seconds, and asks anyway.
  48. If the person when they answer just keeps talking for more then a few seconds,
  49. ATT thinks an answering machine picked up, and hangs up. Same happens with
  50. modems, and fax machines. (It didn't do this at first, but as ATT saw
  51. what people were doing they kept changing it)

  54. Busy numbers:

  56. If the number you call is busy, wait about 10 seconds, and ATT will figure it
  57. out and tell you it's busy. It now will offer to let you talk to an operator
  58. or 'Leave a COLLECT message', by pressing #123. This then asks you
  59. for your name. (Gives you 5+ seconds now. Good for a lot of stuff), and
  60. then gives you 1 minute to leave a full message to the person. After this
  61. ATT will try calling back every few minutes, for the next 6 hours! When the
  62. person gets the call from the ATT computer, It tells them your name, and then..
  63. get this.. offers to sell your 1 minute message to them for $2.50!
  64. This is good for bugging people, and other miss. things.
