- VERSION 8.00
-
- by Terminus
-
- For IBM PC and PC-XT/AT Compatible Computers, with
- Hayes 1200/2400 - US Robotics 2400 modems
-
- Greetings from Terminus
-
- If you don't read the documenation , then you are an utter fool. That
- is why we get so many complaints about things not working, then when
- we finally call you to see what is wrong, half of the trouble is just
- improper configuration of the software and modem..
-
- With the release of CodeBuster 8.00 , we have reached a turning point.
- There have been many changes. Some are not as noticeable as you might
- expect , but they are quite extroadinary.I have decided to use a better
- compiler, while the speed and functionality has improved, the size of the
- object code has alas,increased.
-
- CodeBuster no longer works under Concurrent PC DOS 4.1 ..
-
- CodeBuster's
-
- o now incredibly fast with the US Robotics Courier 2400
- o overall speed beat's all previous versions hands down
- o with at least 11 targets in library uses random targets
- o random hacking is greatly enhanced (keyed from internal clock)
- o new dialing routines won't let you be trapped by false carriers!
-
- Won't let modem stay off hook longer than 60 seconds.
- Defeats many 950's attempts at hanging us with carriers.
-
- Throughout the program you will see 'ADVANCED MODEM' referenced here,
- and there. At this time,it *only* refers to the US Robotics 2400.I have
- heard rumors of Hayes changing the firmware in their 2400 modem to
- support voice and ringing detection but so far they have remained
- just that.RUMORS..
-
-
- BENCHMARK HARDWARE:
-
- CodeBuster is tested extensively on:
-
- 1. IBM PC AT (real IBM)
- 512 K
- IBM ASYNC ADAPTER (9 pin)
- US Robotics 2400 External,Hayes 2400 External,Hayes 1200 External
-
- 2. IBM PC XT (real IBM)
- 640 k
- AST 6 PAK/IBM ASYNC ADAPTER (25 pin)
- US Robotics 2400 External,Hayes 2400 External,Hayes 1200 External
-
- 3. IBM PC (real IBM)
- 448 k
- AST 6 PAK/IBM ASYNC ADAPTER (25 pin)
- US Robotics 2400 External,Hayes 2400 External,Hayes 1200 External
-
- Minimum Requirements:
-
- IBM Compatible (a real compatible,not almost)
- 300 Baud Hayes Compatible Modem
- o support DTR,and real Carrier Detect
- o uses all the regiaters that Hayes does
- Monochrome Adapter
- One floppy Drive
- 256 K memory
-
- Desired Configuration
-
- IBM PC/XT/AT (real)
- 300/1200/2400 Baud Hayes/US Robotics
- Color Graphics Adapter with Color Monitor
- One Floppy
- One Hard Drive (much faster)
- 640 k (shell to Dos)
-
- I test CodeBuster with all three machines at home with the US Robotics
- External and the Hayes 1200 External.Major Havoc tests the Hayes 2400
- External on his systems. This is so that we KNOW it works. If you have
- any trouble with the program and you meet the minimum criteria above,
- then contact us.
-
- ADVANCED FEATURES:
-
- o Detection of Busy Signals
-
- RESULT CODE: 7
-
- This is treated the same as Voice since many extenders use a busy
- signal in addition to a Voice message which sometimes is of such
- low audio level that the modem can't tell if it's a voice, but upon
- reciept of a busy signal it usually can figure it out,and re-cycle.
- On some extenders, the modem wrongly identifies a bad code message as
- a busy signal. This is caused by the audio frequency and interval
- between syllables.Same end result so no problem..Maybe the US Robotics
- could use some improvement in that area, but CodeBuster merely acts
- on information from the modem.
-
- o Detection of Voice (bad code messages)
-
- RESULT CODE: 12
-
- This is the single most important contributor to the LIGHTNING speed
- of CodeBuster with a US Robotics 2400.Imagine the modem re-cycling
- at the first syllable of a bad code message. It is reality...hehe.
- High throughput has now been realized.CodeBuster dials three times as
- many codes per run.
-
- o Detection of Ringing (to facilitate no answer detection)
-
- RESULT CODE: 11
-
- This is the way we detect that after dialing the code, the target did
- not answer. If you have redialing on no answer set true , then the
- modem will attempt the code again, and if multi-target mode is also
- set true ,then it even trys a different target. No way to miss a good
- code if the extender is slow.Make sure that your modem time-out is
- set to a reasonable value. This is optional and on some extenders
- could prove to be useless. Why? If the extender's bad code message is
- of a low audio level and it precedes the bad code message with some
- rings, then the modem detects the ring, doesn't detect the voice and
- then re-dials the same code for infinity...Try it out on every extender
- you hack and then decide.
-
-
- RESULT CODES USED IN THE PROGRAM:
-
- 0 - OK
- 1 - CONNECT
- 3 - NO CARRIER
- 5 - CONNECT 1200
- 7 - BUSY (may be supported by newer 1200 baud modems)
- 10 - CONNECT 2400
- 11 - RINGING *
- 12 - VOICE *
-
- If your modem supports the result codes WITH asterisks, then by all
- means set it up as an 'ADVANCED MODEM'.If your modem supports the
- BUSY result code (7) then you can at least hack alot faster with
- certain extenders.

-
-
- Look up the switch settings in your modem manual.Of primary
- importance , DTR control. If your modem allows normal DTR
- control from the host , then CodeBuster will work. Many internal
- modems DO NOT.
-
- Installation:
- CodeBuster can *only* be installed from a floppy in
- Drive A: ...Surely everyone has one floppy...
- UNARC the CodeBuster file onto a formatted disk with
- COMMAND.COM on it..either preserve this ARC file,or
- make a backup of the disk you have just created.
-
- A>INSTALL
-
- You will be prompted for installing CodeBuster on Floppy
- or Hard Disk..Choose accordingly..If you have chosen
- Hard Disk,Codebuster will create a directory called
- CBUST800..then will copy all the necessary files onto
- the drive.If you have chosen floppy,if drive A: then it's
- important that you've backed up the CodeBuster Disk,as
- the install program deletes some files, and renames others.
- Again,use a floppy with COMMAND.COM on it..if Drive B:
- then just make sure the disk in B: has COMMAND.COM on it
- when you use CodeBuster.
- You will be prompted for the type of display you have in
- your machine...When we say MONO,we mean monochrome adapter.
- When we say COLOR,we mean CGA or EGA.The reason is that the
- Display ram base address is much different depending on the
- Adapter you use...the only thing we direct write is the
- border on menu's...once you have started hacking,CodeBuster
- will not over-write your foreground window if you are using
- Double Dos or any other Multi-Tasking DOS..
-
- o If the install program screws up..
-
- Make sure that you put COMMAND.COM on the CodeBuster Disk
- Make sure that \CBUST800 does not already exist on the
- Hard Drive.
-
- The CodeBuster Disk (Uninstalled) should contain the following files..
-
- Directory of Drive A (DOS Media)

- [1] Start Hacking
-
- Once you have configured CodeBuster by either manual setup,or by
- loading a previously saved configuration you are allowed to start
- hacking.If you have multi-target mode true,then CodeBuster loads
- the multiple target library into memory from the disk file MTARG.DIR
- and upon completion will prompt you for the code to begin hacking at.
-
- If you do not have multi-target set true then you are prompted for
- the code to begin hacking at,and then uses the target number supplied
- in the configuration.Let's begin Hacking..

- The above screen shows that we have barely begun hacking, and have
- detected a voice upon dialing that particular code.At any time during
- the hack run,you can type ESCAPE and you will be returned to the Main
- Menu.
-
- [2] Display Setup
-
- Once you have configured CodeBuster by either manual setup,or by
- loading a previously saved configuration you are allowed to select
- this option.Basically this is just to allow you to quickly verify
- that the present parameters are correct.Once you see the following
- display , and you have finished examining the displayed parameters
- simply type a key and you will return to the main menu.

-
- [3] Save/Load Setup
-
- Once you have configured CodeBuster to hack a certain extender and feel
- that you might want to use those parameters again, then it's a good idea
- to save them.Or,let's say you have previously saved a parameter file and
- you wish to hack again,so let's load a file..Choose item 3 from main menu.
-
-
- [SAVE/LOAD] CONFIGURATION FILE

- 4 1234567.CNF
- 5 2232232.CNF
- 6 950XXXX.CNF
-
- LOAD:2
-
-
- CodeBuster now downloads modem and then displays the parameters sent
- to the modem. The display is identical to the one used when you have
- selected item 2 from the main menu.Again, type a key to exit this display.
-
- To save a configuration that has been fully debugged, choose item 3 from
- the main menu and then:
-
-
- [SAVE/LOAD] CONFIGURATION FILE
-
-
- SAVE CURRENT CONFIGURATION [Y/N]:Y
-
-

- 950XXXX.CNF
- 1234567.CNF
- 446XXXX.CNF
- 950XXXX.CNF
-
- ENTER NEW CONFIGURATION FILENAME:XXXXXXX (do not add .CNF)
-
- If you are updating an existing configuration, then CodeBuster will indicate
- the fact.If it is new, then you'll also be told so.
-
-
- [4] Manual Setup
-
- This allows you to configure a new set of parameters to hack with and
- of course experiment until you have obtained the ultimate configuration
- for hacking the chosen extender. At the end of entry , you are prompted
- as to whether the parameters input are correct and if so,then CodeBuster
- downloads these into the modem. At this time,a data file is created that
- will contain the fresh codes you are going to reap, and the file CODE.DIR
- is updated to reflect the existence of this file...

-
- COM PORT:
- At this time CodeBuster supports only COM1 and COM2.
-
- SPEAKER ON:
- Until you have perfected the particular configuration,it is
- advisable to leave the speaker on..It is maddening to hear it
- dial away, but make sure your configuration is correct before
- killing the speaker.
-
- BAUD RATE:
- CodeBuster supports 3 baud rates.300-1200-2400...I suggest that
- you use 1200 baud hacking...Most Targets are 300/1200 anyway,so
- you don't want to dial in at 2400 and get a 1200 baud carrier,or
- worse 300...At this time,I see no advantage to hacking at 2400,
- and in fact feel that it is a liability since even over the best
- lines 2400 baud can be difficult at times.
- PBX MODE:
- Unless you are stuck in an office or at a hotel, this isn't needed.
- If you don't know what a pbx is,then here is a short explaination.
-
- PBX or Private Branch Exchange is basically a switching system.
- They are essentially a private telephone system installed to
- handle a multitude of phone lines within a business. It is the
- same thing your local telephone company has except on a smaller
- scale. If you have ever been in an hotel , and noted that you had
- to dial an 8 or 9 to get an outside line then you were using a
- PBX.Once I was trapped in a hotel with my portable and needed to
- get some codes to call out with..PBX capabilities were quickly
- added to CodeBuster after that..
-
- CodeBuster ,upon PBX mode true will dial the digit you have
- assigned it as the PBX Digit and will delay a bit, then dial
- outwardly to the extender..Hopefully the delay is long enough to
- allow you to get a second dial tone..If not,then complain..I will
- add a routine to let you select the length of the delay.
-
- EXTENDER TO HACK:
-
- This is the number of the long distance service that you plan to
- hack codes from...a local MCI ,or even an 800..Above all,DO NOT
- place hyphens in this number...for example .. to hack 950-XXXX
- simply input 950XXXX...1-800-446-XXXX would be 1800446XXXX..
-
- TARGET:
- In all cases this is a number which upon connected, will send an
- answer carrier.I suggest using Telenet or Tymnet or even Compuserve
- dial ups...If you are going to use Multi-Target mode,then don't
- worry about making this a real number..Your targets will be loaded
- in from MTARG.DIR and they will be sequentially dialed one by one.
- Again,DO NOT use hyphens in the target number...
-
- PBX DIGIT:
-
- If you selected PBX MODE true , then enter the one digit number
- needed to access an outside line..If you ar not using PBX MODE
- then this will be skipped..
-
- RANDOM MODE:
-
- I suggest STRONGLY that you use random hacking...for one thing, the
- codes you find will last longer..Most Long Distance Services have
- software that can detect sequential dialing of wrong codes..If you
- must use sequential hacking, then for god's sake change codes daily.
-
- INCREMENT:
-
- If you have chosen not to use random hacking , then you will be
- prompted for the value to increment sequentially after hacking each
- code.
-
- EXTENDER DELAY:
-
- This is the amount of time to delay so that once your modem dials
- the long distance service (MCI,etc..) it will wait for the second
- dial tone and then dial the code to hack.If you are using a local
- extender XXX-XXXX then the delay can be as little as 2 seconds. If
- you are using an 800 extender or a very slow local extender, then
- adjust this amount until you get the second dial tone..I have
- found that 800 numbers require as much as 8 seconds delay..it varies
- depending on the type of switch they are using, and line loads..If
- you have the speaker on,and you hear it dialing the code before
- the extender actually answers, then you know you have to add more
- time to this delay..enough said,i hope.
-
- TARGET DELAY:
-
- Some extenders like TravelNet require that a delay be inserted
- after dialing the code and before the destination number is dialed.
- This is tricky and you have to LISTEN to get this delay correct..
- I have been successful hacking TravelNet with CodeBuster..it was
- hard to get the delays right, but once i did,CodeBuster was able
- to hack..
-
- TIMED HACKING:
-
- This was added to allow you to hack for a specific length of time
- and then return to DOS.This is beneficial for Sysop's so that they
- can hack for awhile, and then have a batch file re-load their
- BBS after it exits to DOS.This also allows anyone to choose the
- length of time to hack.
-
- START TIME:
-
- Is the current time..I see no need at this time to have delayed
- hacking...I suppose it might be an interesting idea to have it
- auto hack ,but what the hell..
-
- STOP TIME:
-
- If you have chose timed hacking, then you will be prompted to
- enter the stop time in this format: xx:xx:xx so that if you
- wanted to stop at 8 am,enter 08:00:00
-
- CODE FILENAME:
-
- I suggest using file names that reflect the extender you are going
- to hack...I myself when hacking 123-4567,use a filename of 1234567
- ,CodeBuster appends .NUM to the filename..When you configure, this
- file is created if it doesn't already exist, and is then updated
- into a master code directory file called CODE.DIR.
-
- MULTIPLE TARGETS:
-
- This is excellent...CodeBuster was the first Hacker to use this,
- and if you have a sizeable MTARG.DIR of say 400 targets then it
- is difficult for the long distance services to spot a pattern in
- your hacking..I saw no need to make the selection of the Multi
- Target number random , but someone complained,so now,if you have
- at least 11 target numbers in MTARG.DIR it will select random
- targets from the library. If you choose to use multiple targets,
- make sure you have entered some numbers into the library by using
- the target editor in the Utility menu.I suggest you get a list of
- all the Telenet nodes in the US and enter them into this..If you do
- not wish to use multiple targets, god alone knows why, then the number
- you entered into TARGET: (Manual Setup) above will be used to dial
- all the code attempts.. (easy to spot such hacking)
-
- ADVANCED MODEM:
-
- Yeah..!! With a US Robotics 2400 and this option, you can detect
- voice, busy, and no answer..For the first time,an IBM hacker program
- approaches the excellent performance of the Apple Cat..I can at
- last say I am satisfied...it is awesome..We are hoping that Hayes
- will upgrade their firmware to allow us to support these functions.
- I have always liked Hayes,but I am glad I own a USR..hehe
-
- REDIAL NO ANSWER:
-
- If you have an advanced modem, and wish to have CodeBuster re-dial
- the same code when it detects ringing but doesn't recieve a carrier
- then select this option..Not only will it re-dial the same code,
- but if you have selected multi-target mode true, then it will use
- a new target just in case the one you tried first is down or such.
- Don't worry about getting trapped into a infinite re-dial on a code
- that always gives you ringing but never answers..CodeBuster's limit
- on re-dialing the same code is 6 attempts..At that time you will be
- warned that you have hit a Re-Dial Trap Code and it will kick out
- and increment the code.Not bad,eh?
-
- [5] Instructions
-
- You're looking at them..I have tried to make them understandable..it
- takes effort..If there is something you don't understand, then please
- drop me a line..if you move in the same circles I do..that is..
-
- [6] Exit CodeBuster
-
- Fini,Quit,etc..make sure that COMMAND.COM is available and that you have
- your path and comspec set correctly..
-
- [7] Utility Menu
-
- This is an overlay file that is loaded in from the current disk.It is
- a set of utilities needed to use CodeBuster. The utilities allow you to
- view code files,print code files,edit the multi-target library,delete
- old code files, and delete old configuration files.A new feature has been
- added to let you exit to DOS and then let you re-enter the program by
- typing 'EXIT'.For this feature to work, you have to have COMMAND.COM in
- the current environment.Above all,DO NOT execute a terminate and stay
- resident program after exiting to DOS..it will screw it up everytime.

- Scanners..easy to write..good for obtaining new multiple target numbers.
- That's about it..I recently scanned my prefix at 3 in the morning...People
- are pretty pissed when they get awakened only to have silence greet them
- when they answer the phone.
-
- [9] Terminal Menu
-
- Terminal Program..Minimal.I'd rather use one of the nice ones available
- to us all..I have added xmodem,but only checksum..Check it out,it's not
- up to the quality of the hacker (yet) but give us time..This whole package
- has gotten huge...at 2400 baud it's not too long to send,but at 1200.....
-
-
- NOTES:
-
- Expect minor bugs...Look for the overall size of the package to
- diminish as I tighten the code, and look for ways to do the same
- thing more effeciently.
-
- PROBLEMS:
-
- On several beta runs on machines other than IBM , we have had
- massive trouble..Some of the machines did not have full 25 pin
- serial ports, and we could not get the modem controlled properly.
- I have no idea what the trouble is...everything works great on the
- system's I have here...send me your computer..we'll get it working
- on it...otherwise...I don't have the money to buy anymore systems,
- if it doesn't work on your clone, then I am truly sorry. It gets on
- my nerves too.
- CONTEST:
-
- Since I am *not* an artist,i'd like to have a contest..If someone has
- the time and talent to design a decent opening graphics title page to
- CodeBuster,I will add your name to credits..not much of a reward I guess,
- but if you have a non-standard modem and want me to write a customized
- version of CodeBuster for you,then I will.Can't offer much else.You can
- upload the screen to IDI,and I will get it..If PhreakNet is up,then you
- may be able to upload it there..I am on other systems but don't wish to
- be too explicit about that,if you know what I mean..Leave a text file
- with with instructions on how to contact you safely, and I will..
- Beware of false Terminus clones.
