  9.                      How does BIRON work?

  11. Searches based on topics
  12.  
  13. The BIRON system prompts you to type in a topic for which you are
  14. seeking data.  Your term is matched against a list of several thousand
  15. descriptive terms arranged in associated groups.  If an exact match is
  16. found, you are told how many datasets have been indexed with the
  17. matching term and are offered other associated terms which might assist
  18. in focussing your search.  If no exact match is found, lists of
  19. similarly spelled words are offered for your selection and the process
  20. of matching begins there.  You may list the dataset titles retrieved on
  21. matching your term, or simply save the group which has been retrieved
  22. while you make further selections of topics.  When you have selected all
  23. the topics you require, you have the option to make a combined search
  24. using boolean operators.

  26. Searches based on bibliographic and methodological data
  27.  
  28. You may not be interested in topic-based searches, but may know of a
  29. particular research project for which you require the data; or you may
  30. wish to know what data the Archive has which employs certain research
  31. methodologies.  The BIRON system allows you to type in the names of
  32. persons or organisations associated with particular datasets, titles or
  33. part-titles, dates and geographical areas of data collection, and will
  34. match these with information which we hold about the data.  Similarly,
  35. particular methodologies are recorded and may be used in retrieval.
  36. Spatial units, where relevant, are also included in the databases and
  37. may be used as search terms.

  43. What information is retrieved from the system?
  44.  
  45. At the end of the search, if the search is successful, you will have, on
  46. screen, a list of one or more dataset titles.  You may then view all the
  47. information which we have recorded about that dataset.  The information
  48. includes a list of indexing terms showing all the topics covered by the
  49. data and a catalogue record giving the Archive number, the title, access
  50. conditions, data processing codes, the names of principal investigators,
  51. data collectors, sponsors and depositors, and an abstract detailing the
  52. main purposes of the research and main variables.  Dates, geographical
  53. areas, populations, data collection methodology are also displayed.
