  99. ASK runs a fileserver, accesible by mail. The server is steadily
  100. prepared for mail receipt, which is handled without assistance and
  101. results in a reply to the sender. Usually ASK personnel is not required.

  103. The ASK-server works -just like LISTSERV- with the wellknown
  104. list-concept: Distinct subjects are defined as lists and are accessible
  105. for the users.h the following subjects:

  107. Today two lists exist wit
  108. a) Public Domain Software (Name of the list: PDS)
  109.  
  110. Public Domain Software

  112. This list helps to manage Public Domain Software, contributed by
  113. university members. For the sake of convenient transport, the software
  114. is available in a compressed form (ARC, UUE) and the user has to
  115. uncompress it by himself. Of course, the corresponding transfer-programs
  116. are available on the File- server.

  118. ASK-Forum
  119.  
  120. The Forum "ASK" was installed to give the users the opportunity of
  121. keeping well-informed about the ASK. To get new informations about SISY,
  122. Fileserver or Software-award, the user has to register once (subscribe).
  123. Then he will regularly get contributions, distributed by the forum via
  124. mail.
  125.  
  126. Beside this passive use, the users also have the possibility to send
  127. their own contributions like questions, suggestions, comments or
  128. criticisms to the Forum. These will then  be sent to all other
  129. registered users. Sending of own contributions is only possible when the
  130. users are subscribed to the Forum. The contributions are collected and
  131. saved and are available as monthly notices.

  133. Using the fileserver

  135. Before the description of the mail-commands is given, here is the
  136. summary of the possibilities of using the fileserver:

  138. - call for public domain software
  139. - preparation of public domain software
  140. - registering to participation in discussions
  141. - introduction of own contributions
  142. - handling of own discussion-themes with the ASK-Server
  143.  
  144. The Communication with the fileserver is effected by electronic mail.

  147. Answers to the mail are given mechanically, so a special command-syntax
  148. is necessary. Only the real commands, standing in the subjectplace of a
  149. mail or in the first line of the "body part" at an empty
