- Cincinnati Bell On-Line Services (CBOS) is an information services
- platform provided by Cincinnati Bell Directory, Inc. a subsidiary of
- Cincinnati Bell Inc.
-
- CBOS provides the hardware and software platform for information
- services to exchange and disseminate information.
-
- The CBOS system provides several services including Tristate Online
- (TSO) and Online Education (OLE'). TSO is an online computer system
- offering a wealth of information ranging from recipes and sports, to
- constitutional documents and medical information. TSO also allows users
- to send electronic mail, and gateway to libraries, universities, and
- other interesting services via the internet.
-
- OLE' is a distance learning product that provides an interface between
- students and teachers. Students use computers from home to complete and
- send research papers and assignments electronicallly, discuss class
- topics, take examinations, and ask anonymous questions. Teachers can
- answer questions, post lecture notes, syllabus, or assignments at their
- convenience. OLE' is particularly useful for non-traditional students
- who find it difficult to come to campus, due to family and job
- constraints.
-
- CBD is also working more closely now with schools in the K thru 12 age
- group. The CBOS platform provides the means for meaningful information
- exchanges for class projects or school curriculums. CBD welcomes any
- schools who may have an interest in this area.

- The classroom of the future today.
-
- Ole, OnLine Interactive Education is a unique interactive system for
- distance education. By using a Macintosh or DOS/Windows computer and a
- modem connected to a phone line, Ole enables students to attend courses
- from their homes, dorm rooms, or even another city.
-
- Educate more students for 30% less.
-
- Where Ole has been used, administrators have projected savings of 30%
- over the cost of delivering traditional education over a 5 year period.
-
- Institutions can increase enrollment without expanding the physical
- plant.
-
- Ole makes it possible for the rapidly growing segment of non-traditional
- students to pursue higher education.
-
- Through continuing education, Ole allows universities to acquire
- "Students for Life"
-
- The education power tool.
-
- Ole helps instructors use their time more effectively, allowing more
- time for research and other activities that lead to academic
- advancement.
-
- Ole improves the interaction between instructors and students by
- eliminating the time constraints and scheduling conflicts of office
- hours.
-
- Through bulletin boards, instructors communicate with students about
- homework, stimulate discussions, and answer questions on a one-to-one
- basis.
-
- Ole passes even the most rigorous tests.
-
- At Northern Kentucky University, over 400 students in 6 classes
- participated in a semester-long Ole research study. Half of this group
- attended traditional classes while the other half attended class through
- Ole. The Ole group out- performed their control group counterparts in
- virtually every category.
-
- Two out of three students rated their overall experience as better.
-
- Over half reported more interaction with the instructor and a better
- understanding of course material.
-
- Fifty-five percent of Ole students, compared to forty percent in the
- control group, rated the instructor's attitude towards them as
- excellent.
-
- Students in the test group secured significantly more grades of A than
- those in the control group (48% vs. 30%)
