  15. The DDN Network Information Center (NIC) is located at the DDN
  16. Installation and Integration Support (DIIS) program office in Chantilly,
  17. Virginia.  The NIC is funded by the Defense Information Systems Agency
  18. (DISA), Defense Network Systems Organization (DNSO).  The NIC is
  19. responsible for providing general reference services to DDN users via
  20. telephone, electronic mail, and U.S. mail.
  21.  
  22. The NIC also provides databases and information services of interest to
  23. network users, including the WHOIS registry of network users, the
  24. NIC/Query browsing system, TACNEWS, and the official DoD Host Name
  25. Service.  The NIC maintains the RFC (Request for Comments) collection.
  26. Many of the online files are available through the NIC's automatic mail
  27. service, SERVICE@NIC.DDN.MIL.

  29. Among its other duties, the NIC
  30.       *  registers hosts and domains,
  31.       *  assigns IP network numbers and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs),
  32.       *  provides hostname translation tables and domain name system server
  33.          files to the DDN and the Internet,
  34.       *  registers network users,
  35.       *  issues MILNET TAC Access Cards.
