COPYRIGHT NOTICE
Even though your copy is free, HOME EYELAND is copyright (C) 1993
by Teran Skye. Teran Skye keeps all ownership rights. This
copyright covers all images and shapes in HOME EYELAND, including
the control panel.
Under the terms of the copyright, you may make as many copies of
HOME EYELAND as you like, and give it to anyone you want. You may
not charge more than the normal price of the diskette or other
media. You may upload it to a bulletin board or similar system,
which may charge only its normal downloading or connect time fees
when someone downloads a copy of HOME EYELAND.
You may not use anything you find in HOME EYELAND in another
program without getting prior permission from Teran Skye. When you
copy any portion of HOME EYELAND, you must include the entire set
of files listed below. You may not delete or change any of these
files:
README.1ST - This document
RUNNER.3WD - HOME EYELAND
BORDER06.LBM - The control panel
The following files constitute the Virtual Reality Studio
runtime library:
RUNNER.RSC 6X6FONT.3FD 8X8FONT.3FD RUNNER.3SD
VIDEO.DRV SOUNDNS.DRV SOUNDPC.DRV SOUNDAL.DRV
SOUNDRL.DRV HOME.EXE RUNNER.EXE
(Note: Teran Skye does not claim copyright ownership of these
files.)
If you do not agree to all these terms, you may not use or keep a
copy of HOME EYELAND. You must delete all parts of HOME EYELAND
immediately, including all backup copies you may have.
WHY IS HOME EYELAND FREE?
This is one of a series of EYELANDs. It is the author's hope that
this EYELAND will be widely distributed in order to educate people
about the possibilities and limitations of Virtual Reality. Teran
Skye would also like to be recognized as one of many pioneers in
this new technology, and known as the developer of interesting and
useful EYELANDs. Look for more EYELANDs coming soon or available
now where you found this one.
If you would like a custom EYELAND made for you, or help with a
virtual reality project, please send Electronic Mail to
"T.SKYE@genie.geis.com". (This is an Internet address. Many
computer information services or bulletin boards provide access to
Internet Electronic Mail as part of their basic package.)
GETTING STARTED
If you agree to the terms of the copyright notice above, you may
copy the above listed files to a directory on your hard disk (HOME
EYELAND must be installed on drive C:) and start the program by
typing HOME at your command prompt. Choose a language (at present
only English is supported) and then choose your preferred input
device. Note: a mouse is strongly recommended. You will see
controls for moving forward and backward, turning from side to
side, looking up and down, and so on. These are "point and click"
controls; position the mouse cursor over the control and press the
button. Hold your mouse button down to keep moving.
If you do not have a mouse, the following keys may be used instead:
(Again, hold the key down to keep moving.)
o go k back
j move right h move left
r rise up f fall down
q turn left w turn right
p turn up l turn down
n tilt left m tilt right
i level
The following functions are only available from the keyboard:
c cross-hairs on/off
u u-turn
esc reset (start over)
shift-esc quit
You may also use the number keys (1 thru 9) to choose from the view
buttons that appear on the left of the control panel. Use shifted
number keys to toggle the on/off buttons. For example, shift-1 is
!, which will toggle on/off button 1.
There is no object to the game, or rules to follow, so just explore
and have fun!
HINTS AND LIMITATIONS
Virtual Reality is an emerging technology, and as such it places a
heavy demand on the memory and processing power of your computer.
The more objects there are in the picture, the longer it takes for
the computer to calculate the view. This means you can speed things
up by reducing the number of objects.
You will notice control buttons that will switch various things on
and off. If you like more detail (or you happen to have a very fast
computer) turn all the switches on. For less detail but more
realistic motion, turn the switches off.
This EYELAND was developed using a tool kit called the Virtual
Reality Studio 2. You will notice certain anomalies from time to
time as you explore the EYELAND, such as a distant object appearing
in front of a closer object. This was presumably done by the
authors of Virtual Reality Studio 2 in order to fit their program
within the limited memory and processing power of the Personal
Computer architecture. Despite this, you will probably agree that
there is a remarkable level of realism in many of the images
generated.
IF HOME EYELAND DOES NOT WORK
The author does not guarantee that this EYELAND will work on your
computer or to your satisfaction. If you cannot get HOME EYELAND to
run, you are expected to figure out the problem yourself. However,
the following tips may help you isolate the source of your trouble:
*** MAKE BACKUP COPIES OF YOUR CONFIG.SYS ***
*** AND AUTOEXEC.BAT BEFORE CHANGING THEM ***
If you don't know how to do this,
get help from someone who does.
1. Most of the cryptic error messages you may encounter are
caused by insufficient main memory. Use the MEM /C command to
see what is using up your memory. Remove TSRs and device
drivers from your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, reboot,
and try again.
If the EYELAND still will not start, rename your CONFIG.SYS
and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, then reboot. This should give you an
environment free of any conflicts with other programs you may
have installed.
Note: Without your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, your
mouse may not work. But you can use the
keyboard commands listed above to verify that
the EYELAND is working on your computer.
Ultimately, CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT should contain the
commands necessary to activate your mouse, and little else.
2. If that doesn't work, try running HOME EYELAND on another
computer. HOME EYELAND expects a VGA color monitor and
graphics board, and uses almost all of the base 640K of
memory. An 80386 or faster CPU is also very helpful.
3. Once you get HOME EYELAND working, compare the hardware and
software environment that supports HOME EYELAND with your
original hardware and software environment that did not
support HOME EYELAND. One by one, eliminate the differences
between the two configurations until you discover which
product or option is preventing HOME EYELAND from working.
