  18. CalREN, the California Research and Education Network, is Pacific Bell's
  19. program to stimulate the development and dissemination of high-speed data
  20. communication applications.   CalREN's goal is promote the development of
  21. applications that:
  22.  
  23. *       Improve education and health care delivery
  24. *       Improve business and governmental process
  25. *       Facilitate new business development and job creation
  26. *       Improve the economic competitiveness of California
  27.  
  28. Through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process, CalREN will provide free
  29. Pacific Bell data communication services for a period of time to selected
  30. application demonstration projects.
  31.  
  32. This may be the first CalREN mailing you have received.  In an attempt to
  33. reach the broadest possible audience, CalREN has supplemented its existing
  34. mailing list with community-of-interest based lists obtained through
  35. established public channels.  In most cases we do not know precisely what
  36. job title to address this to within your organization.  We need your
  37. assistance in promptly directing this package to the person or group that
  38. has the technical expertise to evaluate the applicability of this
  39. opportunity.  In most organizations this would be a telecommunications
  40. manager or information systems manager.

  42. This package includes three community-of-interest based RFPs as follows:

  48. Although every effort has been made to adequately define the sectors that
  49. each of the attached RFPs is intended to encompass, we do expect that in
  50. some circumstances there could still be confusion regarding which RFP to
  51. respond to.  If there is any uncertainty, please contact the CalREN staff
  52. for clarification.

  96. The CalREN RFP process was explained in detail in Briefing Package No. 2. 
  97. The RFP process section included a description of the five RFPs that will
  98. comprise the CalREN project solicitation process, a preliminary schedule,
  99. distribution procedures, response preparation resources, and the response
  100. evaluation process.  If you need a copy of Briefing Package No. 2, contact

  105. The RFP schedules are subject to change.  Changes will be communicated
  106. through subsequent CalREN briefings.

  113. December 15, 1993.   The project approval process will begin on November 2,

  348. Technology availability/timing was covered in detail in Briefing Package
  349. No. 2.  At that time, Pacific Bell was expecting CPUC tariff approval for
  350. Frame Relay on October 15, 1993.  A delay has occurred, and approval is now
  351. expected November 23, 1993.  This delay is not expected to impact CalREN
  352. project implementations.
