1. Press any key on the keypad to turn on the phone.
(Step 2 must be performed and complete within 10 seconds after turning on phone)
2. Press & Hold CL (Clear) key while entering key code "923885". This should place the phone in the programming mode.
(Note: If the unit will not go into programming mode, try alternate access method *** below)
3. At this time, the radio's serial number will be displayed in decimal format (I believe in scrolls the first digit (1) off the screen). Write down the ESN if necessary, then press S (send) to advance to the first entry step.
(NOTE: some units will not display the ESN but will go directly to the 1st entry step " 0 " instead.)
At this point you should have a " 0 " (zero) in the display & it should also be display the information for the 1st step which is the MIN.
Some notes before continuing:
A. The S (send) key is used to enter or write the displayed info in each step & advance to the next step.
B. The CL (clear) key may be used to correct any entry before the S key is pressed.
C. The END key may be used to complete the NAM programming & resume normal operation at any stage in the programming. Just remember hit the S key in the step you're in before pressing END.
D. You can just hit the S key to skip an entry & move on to the next if its already correct.
E. The RCL (recall) key is used to recall the current entry number.
F. If the data for any particular step is invalid, a beep will sound & the display will not change.

If the phone has dual NAM capability, the display will show " 1 " for the beginning of the second NAM at this point. If it doesn't, you should see a " 0 " showing you've come back to the beginning. You can now press END/FCN to reboot the phone.
*** Alternate Access Method:
1. Turn on the phone by pressing any key.
2. Press & HOLD the FCN key & press the 4 (A/B) key.
3. Press the Volume Up key twice.
4. Press CLR
5. IMMEDIATELY, press and hold CLR while entering "923885"
FYI: COMMAND CODES
You can put some of the GE units into test mode, but I'm not sure which you can or can't. As with any phone, be careful, as you could fry it if you're not sure of what you doing. I stress that I don't know which GE phones this will work with or which it won't, so don't blame me if it oesn't work or it fries your phone.
I've never tried this.

To place the phone into test mode, open up the chassis & find the audio logic board. It should have the wires from the handset plugged into it. The audio logic board should be the upper board. Somewhere on the Audio Logic board is a small hole through which you should see two small pins on the main logic board below. You must short these pins while powering up the unit.
I don't know what the display will show, none of my documentation specifies.

Last but not least, I think I remember there being something about a limit to the number of times these phones can be programmed. As I recall, it was three programmings & then it locked you out. I might have this confused with another manufacturer, I don't remember. I know the old NovAtel 8305 xcvrs were often this way. Another point, I do know for certain that if you fail to properly enter into the programming mode after three attempts, the phone will go into a sleep mode, where it won't let in regardless if you've got the right sequence or not. I believe the sleep mode lasts for 15 minutes. This was implemented to prevent Joe Blow Curious from fiddling with your unattended phone.

As far as the phone staying on, even when the ignition is shut off:
1: The display will continue to show the CLOCK even when
the ignition is off. This doesn't mean you haven't shut off
the phone when you pressed FCN END or whatever the turn off
sequence is.
2: Even if you had the ignition sense lead tied to the
constant power lead (as in a transportable config.), the
turn off sequence would still power down the PHONE, but the
CLOCK will continue to display as long as there is power to
