  58.                      12 NUCLEAR BOMBS THAT COULD RUIN THE 90s

  63.    The MX, Midgetman, and the Trident II D5 get all the headlines. The B-2
  64. stealth bomber, which costs more than its weight in gold, is turning budget-
  65. minded heads in Washington. But you probably didn't know that there is a
  66. war-fighter's dozen of obscure, expensive and completely irrelevant nuclear
  67. weapons moving toward active duty, an arsenal of Cold War dinosaurs that are
  68. oblivious to the thaw in international affairs. Together they have a price
  69. tag of some $20 billion - $15 billion of which could be saved if they were
  70. cancelled today.
  71.    Two of these bummers, the Follow-On To Lance and the Navy's Tomahawk sea-
  72. lainched cruise missile, have been discussed by Congress. Three others are
  73. included in the upcoming Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) between the
  74. Soviet Union and the United States, but they slip through a loophole and are
  75. excluded from the 6,000-warhead limit each side agreed to as the goal of START.
  76. In other words, they are half on and half off the table. The rest are
  77. proceeding out of public scrutiny; there are no plans to include them in any
  78. negotiations or agreements in the future.
  79.    Each has its rationale, however thin and outdated, but on close examination
  80. the bummers appear more and more to be part of a last-ditch effort to keep
  81. the Dpartment of Energy's massive nuclear weapons production complex in
  82. business. Without a variety of bombs in the pipeline, only one, the
  83. Trident-II D5, would be in production in the '90s. Here is a handy reader's
  84. guide to the Pentagon's dirty dozen.

  87. 1. ADVANCED CRUISE MISSILE
  88. --------------------------
  89. Purpose: Launched from bombers, this high-tech missile is designed to sneak
  90.          by radar in the Soviet Union better than the missile it replaces,
  91.          which was deployed less than 10 years ago to sneak by radar. There it
  92.          will land directly on missile launchers, airfields and other military
  93.          facilities.
  94. On duty: late this year or 1991.
  95. Home base: Michigan, North Dakota, Texas, Washington.
  96. Savings if cancelled: nearly $6 billion.

  98. 2. SHORT-RANGE ATTACK MISSILE II (SRAM-II)
  99. ------------------------------------------
  100. Purpose: Launched from bombers, this missile will accurately blow up air
  101.          defenses in the Soviet Union so the B-2 bomber can get through to
  102.          blow up cities and other targets with nuclear bombs like the B83
  103.          Modern Strategic Bomb (see Bummer #3); will also seek out and
  104.          destroy mobile missile launchers and command centers.
  105. On duty: now being tested for production in 1993.
  106. Home base: Kansas, Missouri, Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota.
  107. Savings if cancelled: $2.4 billion.

  109. 3. B83 MODERN STRATEGIC BOMB
  110. ----------------------------
  111. Purpose: This blockbuster, equal to 70 Hiroshimas, will deliver the second
  112.          half of the one-two nuclear punch, leveling cities and other targets
  113.          deep in the Soviet Union after the SRAM-II (see Bummer #2) levels
  114.          defenses in the countryside.
  115. On duty: now in full-scale production
  116. Home base: Arkansas, California, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, North
  117.            Dakota, South Dakota, Texas.
  118. Savings if cancelled: depends on how many B-2 bombers get off the ground,
  119.                       but production costs are $250 million a year, or about
  120.                       $1 million per bomb.

  122. 4. SHORT-RANGE ATTACK MISSILE-TACTICAL (SRAM-T)
  123. -----------------------------------------------
  124. Purpose: Fired from warplanes, this missile is designed to do Bummer #2's
  125.          job in Eastern Europe (home of Lech Walesa and Vaclav Havel). Also
  126.          useful for aiming at North Korea.
  127. On duty: now in development, to begin production in 1995.
  128. Home base: Nevada, New Mexico, Italy, South Korea, United Kingdom, West
  129.            Germany.
  130. Savings if cancelled: $1 billion.

  132. 5. B61 TACTICAL BOMB
  133. --------------------
  134. Purpose: Little brother of Bummer #3, this bomb will be dropped on field
  135.          targets such as military units or storage depots during a war in
  136.          Eastern Europe or Korea as well as on targets along the Soviet Union's
  137.          Black Sea and the Pacific coast.
  138. On duty: in full-scale production.
  139. Home base: California, Hawaii, Louisiana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada,
  140.            Virginia, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, South Korea, Turkey
  141.            (watch out Armenia and Azerbaijan), United Kingdom, West Germany
  142.            and assorted aircraft carriers.
  143. Savings if cancelled: unknown, but production costs are roguhly $200 million
  144.                       a year.

  146. 6. FOLLOW-ON TO LANCE
  147. ---------------------
  148. Purpose: Designed to be launched from (West) Germany to destroy military units
  149.          and storage depots in places like (East) Germany. When the two
  150.          countries unify, Czechoslovakia will act as stand-in.'
  151. On duty: in development, to begin production in 1997.
  152. Home base: California, New York, South Korea, West Germany, Italy.
  153. Savings if cancelled: $750 million to $1.25 billion.

  155. 7. 155 MILLIMETER FIRED ATOMIC PROJECTILE
  156. -----------------------------------------
  157. Purpose: This little gem will be called into service when Bummer #6 can't do
  158.          the job. Based in West Germany, Italy, and Turkey, it can only be
  159.          tossed about 20 miles, which means in will land in - you guessed it -
  160.          West Germany, Italy, or Turkey.
  161. On duty: production to begin this year.
  162. Home base: California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Greece, South
  163.            Korea, Italy, West Germany, Turkey.
  164. Savings if cancelled: $500 million.

  166. 8. TOMAHAWK NUCLEAR LAND ATTACK MISSILE
  167. ---------------------------------------
  168. Purpose: Launched from ships and submarines, this missile is designed to bounce
  169.          the rubble after nuclear war has started. It is also aimed at naval
  170.          bases and coastal airfields in the Soviet Union.
  171. On duty: 1984, in full-scale production.
  172. Home base: California, Hawaii, Virginia, South Carolina, New Jersey, Sardinia,
  173.            Italy, warships and attack submarines.
  174. Savings if cancelled: $1.25 billion.

  176. 9. B90 NUCLEAR DEPTH/STRIKE BOMB
  177. --------------------------------
  178. Purpose: A neat three-for-one package, this bomb can blow up submarines as
  179.          well as surface warships and bases anywhere along the coasts of
  180.          Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union or the Korean Peninsula. The B90
  181.          is the Navy's last nuclear hurrah, as they are deep into the process
  182.          of shelving all the other nuclear weapons earmarked for ocean combat.
  183. On duty: in development, to begin production in 1993.
  184. Home base: Alaska, California, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, Virginia,
  185.            Italy, United Kingdom, aircraft carriers.
  186. Savings if cancelled: $1 billion.

  190. 10. EARTH PENETRATOR WARHEAD
  191. ----------------------------
  192. Purpose: After a nuclear war starts and the SRAM-IIs have cleared the
  193.          countryside and the B83s have razed the cities, this burrowing
  194.          wonder will prove to the Soviets that all that stuff about
  195.          invulnerable underground shelters is hokum.
  196. On duty: no time soon, but they're trying.
  197. Savings if cancelled: unknown.

  199. 11. HIGH-POWER MICROWAVE WEAPONS
  200. --------------------------------
  201. Purpose: These bombs will fill the atmosphere and outer space with electronic
  202.          noise to make sure that, in the event of a war, no one can fly,
  203.          communicate or surrender.
  204. On duty: more like on the drawing board.
  205. Savings if cancelled: at this point, some strategist's lunch hour.

  207. 12. HYPERVELOCITY GLIDE VEHICLE
  208. -------------------------------
  209. Purpose: To go very very very very fast.
  210. On duty: Hopefully never.

  215. Obviously the last three were bullshit mockery of this country's race to get
  216. the biggest guns and the first name in nuclear technology. It makes me wonder
  217. if ALL these bombs were parodical, but some had pictures of the disassembled
  218. bombs and the actual things being worked on.

  220. The race for power is bullshit. But can we discontinue these weapons? An
  221. arms treaty will not accomplish shit at this point. If we were to go to war,
  222. what defenses would we have? We can't live without the protection (kinda
  223. like having a period without the pads, or toxic shock without medication!),
  224. but we simply can't live WITH it. The arms race is pushing us deeper and deeper
  225. into debt. If we continue, countries will declare war on us for constantly
  226. borrowing money and never repaying it. Simple.

  229. future issues of the Flaming Fetus. It's time we, the citizens of this
  230. Great Heap Nation of Cow Manure did something, and did something RIGHT.
