The freeware crash-prevention program for Windows '95(tm)
Hi. Welcome to BBSWATCH, the freeware crash protection program for Sysops
running their BBS under Windows '95.
WHO SHOULD NOT USE THIS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you don't know what a SysOp or a BBS is, this is not for you.
If you do not use Windows 95, this is not for you.
------------------------WHAT BBSWATCH DOES AND DOESN'T DO---------------------
BBSWATCH will *NOT* fix problems that occur within your BBS window.
Example, if a user is in a door and it locks up, BBSWATCH won't do anything.
ALL BBSWATCH does, is re-open the window if it was closed. The program assumes
everything is going A-OK within the window, that is up to you to setup.
All this program will do is watch wether the window is open or closed, and
re-start it if Windows or whatever closes it down.
If the Window is still OPEN, BBSWATCH does nothing with whats inside.
----------------------------------INTRODUCTION--------------------------------
BBSWATCH was designed by a fellow named Andrew Adams, who runs his BBS under
Windows 95, and was sick of Windows constantly shutting down the window in
which his BBS ran in. So he said, "HEY! I'm sick of windows constantly shutting
down the window in which my BBS runs in! I must do somthing!"
And he went to work designing this program to keep his BBS running 24hrs a
day, even if nasty old Windows 95 shut down the windows.
When he was finished, he said to himself "Ahh... Much better. I wonder if
other Sysops have the same problems!?"
And he asked local Sysops and found that many of them did. Wether it was only
ocassional or quite often, each and every one of the Sysops had experienced
this. And they said "Hey, Andrew, us Sysops want to use this wonderfull
program!"
And there it began. So, Andrew figured to himself that he would let people
use it for free, seeing it was super useful. (Adding the fact he is a nice guy)
OK!!!!! Enough blabbing. On to the documentation! (Blech!)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Andrew, what is required to run this marvelous thing?
1. An IBM-Compatible PC
2. Windows '95
3. A BBS program
4. The fact that your WINDOWS\COMMAND directory is in the PATH **Important**
5. Very little memory free (so little, why bother counting?)
OK! How do I get started?
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
First of all, unzip the archive into any old directory.
Ok thats all the installation. You're started.
Ok! I got it installed! How do I get this baby fired up?
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
What you need to do, is go into Windows, and edit your STARTUP group.
Remove your normal BBS Startup command, and REPLACE it with
{bbswatch directory}\BBSWATCH.EXE [ bbs startup command ]
So, in example, if my BBS startup program was C:\MyBBS\STARTBBS.BAT, I would
use
C:\UTIL\BBSWATCH C:\MyBBS\STARTBBS.BAT
Ok... Thats it. BBSWATCH will start your program, and moniter the box that it
is in. Just leave BBSWATCH running minimized in the backround, and it will
catch any foul movements by Windows 95.
-----------------------------TESTING BBSWATCH---------------------------------
If you want to see if BBSWATCH really works, then follow the above
instructions, start BBSWATCH, and then close your BBS window. A few seconds
later, a new one should appear. If not, please see below.
