  5. The Third annual Conference on Computers, Freedom and Privacy was
  6. held
  7. 9-12 March, 1993, at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Hotel In
  8. Burlingame, Calif.  A crowd of experts, non-experts, students,
  9. professionals, and law enforcement and others assembled to discuss
  10. issues of Electronic Democracy and the impact of computer
  11. technology
  12. in social change. From the various accounts, it appears that the
  13. conference was more than a success. Formal sessions, BOF ("birds of
  14. a
  15. feather") informal meetings, and lively interaction generated
  16. enthusiastic discussion on The Well (voice: 415-332-4335; telnet:
  17. well.sf.ca.us).

  19. We reproduce a flavor of the conference with the following posts.

  21. value and efficacy of bridging the gap between cybernauts and law
  22. enforcement and intelligence agencies sparked considerable
  23. passionate
  24. debate. CuD shares the view that, while it is never wise to be
  25. overly
  26. optimistic about the potential success of such bridges, they can do
  27. no
  28. harm, and the potential for reform far outweighs and disadvantages
  29. that we can see.  We find Bob Steele's comments in File #9
  30. convincing.

  32. Planning for next year's conference has begun, and if it's as
  33. strong
  34. as the '93 conference was reported to be, there will undoubtedly be
  35. more applicants. Perhaps the organizers could expand the number of
  36. scholarships to make it possible for those who couldn't otherwise
  37. afford it to attend.
