  13.     Happy birthday, Mexico.  Birthplace of many millions of Americans. 
  14. Birthplace of ancient cultures.  Birthplace of great music and food.

  16.                             MARIJUANA!!??

  18.     The history books tell us that one reason for the prohibition of
  19. marijuana was that "under its baseful influence reckless men become
  20. bloodthirsty, terribly daring and dangerous to an uncontrollable degree."
  21. We are told that in 1910 a public official wrote that "marijuana was the
  22. most frightening and vicious drug ever to hit New Orleans."

  24.     What was the real reason marijuana was prohibited?

  26.                              RACISM!

  28.     Good old red, white and blue American racism!
  29.  
  30.     The Mexican revolution broke out in 1910 and the unrest spread
  31. over the U.S. border in 1916 when Pancho Villa and his pot smoking
  32. followers (some of them) invaded Columbus, New Mexico.  Crowds of poverty
  33. stricken, uneducated Mexican peasants were migrating northward.  Jim Crow
  34. America sensed another "yellow peril." Just as with the Chinese and opium,
  35. American public opinion was manipulated to believe that Mexican immigrants
  36. would bring in their devil drug, "marijuana," to seduce and corrupt the
  37. divine American way.

  39.                                   MARIJUANA?
  40.                                  WHAT'S THAT??

  42.     In reality cannabis had already been in the country for centuries,
  43. but it was known as "hemp."  "Marijuana" was its Mexican name.  Nobody knew
  44. what it was, but everyone knew that Mexicans smoked it and it made them
  45. grow crazy.  So the government began to ban it.  That was in the 1930's.

  47.                                      THE REST
  48.                                      YOU KNOW.

  50.     Today we are becoming aware that merely smoking "marijuana" does
  51. not drive you crazy and that smoking its leaves and flowers is only one
  52. use out of thousands for cannabis/hemp.  Let's put aside the semantics and
  53. racial perjuratives.  Yeah, we all know the stereotypes:  shiftless
  54. Mexicans smoking marijuana and ravishing American women; drunken Indians
  55. on their impoverished reservations;  devious Chinese and Laotians,
  56. scheming to hook American youth on opium and heroin. And lately homicidal
  57. blacks pushing cocaine and crack.  Racial prejudice always can use some
  58. kind of exotic chemical boogie man nobody ever heard of to fan its fires.

  60.                                 WHAT ABOUT
  61.                                  ALCOHOL?
  62.  
  63.     The average American parent will casually offer their adult child
  64. a beer.  That's our cultural drug.  But 100 years ago Americans wore hemp
  65. fiber clothing, read from hemp paper and used cannabis ingredients in
  66. their patent medicines.  What's changed?  Something called "marijuana" -
  67. pass a law against it and the problem - as well as its scruffy users -
  68. will go away.  Will we ever learn? 
  69.  
  70.     On Cinco de Mayo we celebrate the birth of the United States of
  71. Mexico and wish her a long life and good health.  The USA should keep its
  72. imperialistic mitts to itself and if the people of Mexico wish to smoke
  73. "marijuana" or anything else, that's their business.  The USA has no
  74. right to interfere in Mexico's sovereignty!
  75.  
  76.     The USA is a democracy and we will eventually repeal the
  77. prohibition of cannabis/hemp.  On Cinco de Mayo we just want to point out
  78. how racism branded three species of plants - and a nation full of people -
  79. to be evil.
