  7.               Medical operations are carried out everyday, but for
  8.          some, an operation can change a person's life.  One
  9.          experiment was done on a mentally retarded person to try to
  10.          raise his intelligence.  The experiment worked, but after
  11.          months, the patient regressed dramatically.  In the book,
  12.          Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes, this intelligence
  13.          operation was preformed, and the patient was Charlie Gordon.
  14.          After the operation, Charlie was very bright, but experienced
  15.          psychological traumas, loneliness, disillusionment, and
  16.          social inadequacies.
  17.               Charlie's psychological traumas or emotional upset was
  18.          caused by his memory recalls.  After his operation, he
  19.          remembered every aspect of his childhood, whether it was good
  20.          or bad.  "...He's normal!  He's normal!  He'll grow up like
  21.          other people.  Better than others..."  Charlie had dreams of
  22.          how his mother was ashamed of him.  His mother always thought
  23.          her son was normal and would grow up and be somebody.
  24.          "...He's like a baby.  He can't play Monopoly or checkers or
  25.          anything.  I won't play with him anymore..."  Charlie's
  26.          sister also ignored him.  To her, Charlie was dumb and could
  27.          not do anything.  Charlie had dreams of his sister yelling at
  28.          him and making fun of him.  He also had memories of the night
  29.          his parents took him to the Warren Home.  He was terrified
  30.          and his dad would never answer his questions.  Charlie
  31.          remembered his childhood and through his memories, he felt
  32.          guilty for hurting his family.
  33.               After the operation, Charlie also suffered from
  34.          disillusionment.  In the bakery he used to have friends.
  35.          Friends that would talk to him and care about him.  "...Why?
  36.          Because all of the sudden your a bigshot.  You think you are
  37.          better than the rest of us..."  Charlie then realized that he
  38.          had no friends but merely knew people that made fun of him.
  39.          The bakery employees just liked him because they could blame
  40.          their mistakes on Charlie.  Then, they could not do this
  41.          after the operation, so they all turned against Charlie.
  42.          "...I had to find out just how much they knew.  I found out.
  43.          Nothing..."  "Both frauds"  Charlie also found out about
  44.          Nemur and Strauss.  He realized they were not professionals,
  45.          but two men that were taking a shot in the dark.  Charlie
  46.          felt like an expendable lab specimen.  Thus, Charlie had lost
  47.          his friends and knew now he was just a like a lab rat.
  48.          Charlie had lacked faith in his fellow man.
  49.               "...Thoughts of suicide to stop it all while I am still
  50.          in control..."  Everyday Charlie lost a piece of himself.  He
  51.          was starting to regress and thought about suicide to end his
  52.          up and down life.  He became irritable and edgy around people
  53.          at the university.  He would become mad at people very
  54.          quickly and then yell at them.  His self-centered and
  55.          arrogant personality was a symptom of his regression.  People
  56.          stayed away from him because he was becoming a madman and was
  57.          unpredictable.  Because of this, Charlie became lonely in his
  58.          last weeks before he regressed totally.
  59.               "...Intelligence without the ability to give and receive
  60.          affection can lead to a mental breakdown..."  Charlie

  73.          experienced social inadequacies while he was intelligent.
  74.          "...You know as well as I do, you don't need to work here
  75.          anymore..."  Charlie lost his job because he was to smart to
  76.          work in a bakery.  He could not socially interact with people
  77.          he worked with and the people he met.  Also, Charlie could
  78.          not perform with Alice or Fay.  "...I saw him watching me
  79.          with his eyes wide open.  I couldn't do it..."  He
  80.          experienced illusions when he tried to make love with Alice.
  81.          The "Charlie" inside of himself emerged and started to regain
  82.          control of his mind.  All in all, Charlie suffered from the
  83.          pain of not knowing how to deal with his peers and decisions.
  84.               Therefore, after the operation, Charlie became a smart
  85.          man but he had to pay the price for it.  He had psychological
  86.          traumas, suffered from loneliness and illusions, and did not
  87.          know how to act with his peers.  Charlie regressed and
  88.          finally went to the Warren Home, but he at least experienced
  89.          the world through normal eyes.  On the other hand, Charlie
  90.          might of been better off without the experiment.  He would
  91.          still have friends and a job, but most important of all, he
  92.          would have a life.
