  6.         Tetanus, often referred to as "lock jaw", is caused by toxins
  7.  
  8. released from Clostridium Tetani which lives in soil. It is
  9. a bacterial disease, and can enter the human body through 
  10. any wound but usually does so through foot wounds. Tetanus 
  11. interferes with the transmission of nerve impulses, creating
  12. prolonged muscle spasms which may cause the jaw to "lock" 
  13. closed or paralyze the muscles needed to breathe. Tetanus is 
  14. more dangerous in tropical areas, especially areas with poor 
  15. sanitation.

  17. The incubation period of tetanus ranges from two to sixty 
  18. days. The longer the incubation period, the greater the 
  19. chance that the infected person will recover. The early 
  20. symptoms of the disease are headaches, toothaches, profuse 
  21. sweating, restlessness, irritability, stiff neck, difficulty
  22. swallowing, sore muscles and over-anxiousness. Soon after the 
  23. early symptoms, the person infected with tetanus will 
  24. experience spasms, inflexibility of the neck and back muscles 
  25. and a painful, persistent grimace of facial muscles; which 
  26. gives the impression of a sardonic grin. There are different
  27. levels of spasms experienced by those infected with tetanus. 
  28. The mild cases of spasms are limited to only the neck and 
  29. head. this condition is know as lock jaw. Severe cases 
  30. include spasms in the back, extremities, diaphram, and 
  31. respiratory muscles. In addition, many complications 
  32. accompany the disease. Some of these include  intestinal 
  33. ulcers, blood clot formation, and respiratory disorders; 
  34. which is the most common cause of death in people infected 
  35. with tetanus.
