A few months ago, a friend said it would be nice if someone wrote a menu program that you could just put on a disk, and it would automatically figure out what was on the disk and determine how to load it.
Not one to miss a hint (or back down from an interesting challenge), I thought "Why not?" A few short weeks later, Automenu was born. It turned out that my friend didn't really think such a program was possible, and couldn't believe it when I gave him the finished product. He loved it. I hope you will too.
Setting up Automenu is simple: Just copy it onto a disk containing Basic and machine language programs. Then, when you want to use a program on the disk, load Automenu, type RUN, and Automenu does the rest without any interference from you. You don't have to know anything about programming to use Automenu. It was written to figure everything out for itself. It can even tell if you're using a 1541, 1571 or 1581 disk drive, and it supports them all! Here's how to use it.
Automenu first searches for programs in the disk's directory and displays a menu of the programs that it finds. Then you select a program from that menu using the cursor keys. Press RETURN to make your selection. Or, if you really want to be fancy, you don't even have to touch the keyboard! Automenu lets you use a joystick in port 2 to make selections. (You really can't get much easier to use than that!) From there, Automenu has a few quick prompts to load your programs with minimum hassle.
As a bonus to 1541 users, Automenu automatically "fixes" the drive so that it won't make those loud rattling noises when it encounters a disk error.
