A very early schism within Islam. The Kharijities emphasized the role of jihad (holy war) and a very sparse and ascetic Islam. They also violently opposed the early Arabic 'aristocracy' and were probably responsible for the assassination of Ali because of the political compromises he had made with the Ummayid dynasty. Only a few scattered communities remain.
